MotorStorm 2 gets weighty patch

Evolution wipes dirt from windscreen.

Sony has rolled out the first serious MotorStorm: Pacific Rift game update.

The most substantial changes are back-up saves, icons indicating when critical saves are taking place, boost exploit fixes, more coherent online rankings and nicer-looking photos thank God.

You'll be prompted to install the update when taking MotorStorm: Pacific Rift Online.

Developer Evolution Studios writes on the US PlayStation blog that Game Update 2 will be available soon.

This, we're told, will cater for the collectors, especially those with a hankering for Trophies.

MotorStorm: Pacific Rift squelched onto shelves late last year, delivering more variety but perhaps less consistency than the first game.

Pop over to our MotorStorm: Pacific Rift review to find out why.

Yep Pacific Rift is a dog to play. It's virtually impossible to win races without exploiting the boost cheat. The games rubber banding AI is just nonsense. You are not rewarded at all for good driving and can never outdrive the AI cars even if you have the fastest car in the game.
  • Altrezia #2 3 years ago

I'm not sure I agree Penhalion - I could win races, and I didnt even know there was a boost cheat!

I say 'could' win races, as I haven't touched the game in ages - A shame really.
  • mikll #3 3 years ago

I've never heard of this boost cheat...

But I have never had any problem winning races. Most of the time I have gold first of second try. I've really loved the game and in my opinion is has been a definate step up from the original but admittedly does feels a bit odd at first.

Good to see an update hopefully the next one will be bigger with big new events.
  • Arwin #4 3 years ago

@penhalion: what? Until at least tier 5, it's not particularly hard at all and you can win with the AI behind you a fair bit pretty easily. Even then it doesn't get properly hard until tier 7-8, I think.

Pacific Rift is an awesome game, one of the best arcade racers I've ever played, much better than the original, and I can't still for the life of me understand Eurogamer's review. ;) I ranked the game a 9/10 after the first few hours, but after the first 12 hours I've upgraded it to a 10/10.

But that I guess goes to show that gaming's still a matter of taste. Put this next to Street Fighter IV's 10/10 on Eurogamer, for instance, and you'll see what I mean.

    @Altrezia and Arwin

Glad to see im not the only one who loved this game.

I too thought EGs review was a little odd. It is a taste thing but as a game of its genre its fantastic.

The single player is a huge improvement on the first game and online still rocks!!
  • JHuxley #6 3 years ago

Yep, I agree with Arwin. Motorstorm 2 > Motorstorm in almost every way.

Except for the time trials. God how I hate those.

Well i came first on a level 7 race this morning and i have no idea what the boost cheat was, plus it patched so i wouldnt be able to do it anyway. It took 2 attmepts but it is on the second to hardest difficulty its not suppose to be a walk in the park.

For me Motorstorm 2 was a massive improvement on the original, and is one of my fave games of last year.

A very underrated game. Some of the new tracks are excellent. But the bike handling went backwards in a big way.

Never heard of the boost cheat either. But then I don't have 16 hours a day to spend trying to find glitches and exploits like most kids today. Course when the 'miggy was around we didn't have YouTube to tell the world about flying sofa's.

I picked this up last month and it's a great game. Much more enjoyable than the first, although the handling of some vehicles has been tweaked slightly. Haven't taken it online yet, but I never tried online in the first game either.
  • Haggar #10 3 years ago

Pacific Rift is excellent. Who doesn't enjoy Monster Trucks. Really enjoying the online modes. Although Sugar Rush track continues to be the bain of my life...
  • penhalion #11 3 years ago

To clarify I'm not talking about the early races. I'm talking about the later races, where the rubberbanding is turned right up and no car you drive can get you away from the pack.

I absolutely don't believe anyone who claims it's easy or even possible to win the races after about the fifth tier, if you have crashed more than once, has ever played the game. The random disasters coupled with the rubber banding pretty much guarantee that you can't.

It's a shame really as the game is fun for the first few tiers. After that you end up cursing and restarting more than actual racing.
  • NinjaWilliams #12 3 years ago

You dont need the boosts to cheat anyways, its all fair n square it be boring with no rubber banding, no challenge!

Great game loved the first, all golds in all modes n dlc! The sequel will last me ages, love that photo mode too!

The patch is great, fixed that critical inability to backup the game saves now! :)
  • Tiel #13 3 years ago

    REally no rubber banding?

The first was a shocker and I hate this in games.

I'd assumed the second would be the same.
  • GamesConnoisseur #14 3 years ago

My blood get boilings when despite all great efforts and AI rubber banding I fail at the final hurdle due to the fecking physics, slight bump that got my car smashed and handed the last place!

I mean you gotta really love the game to swallow this down.

Not suprised that its a bit of a marmite and I cannot fault EG review/score.
  • alpha-0ne #15 3 years ago

I actually bought this for £27 when it came out, with the deluge of games i never got round to playing it its still in the celophane

I may aswell check it out now the patch is out
  • oreillymj #16 3 years ago

Would agree that the rubber banding in the first game ruined the later races for me.

Haven't got that far in MS2. busy playing COD5 WAW, and haven't even started Fallout3 and Bioshock which picked up cheap in the sales. LBP has been pretty much neglected and I can't see that changing next week.

@penhalion, what utter shite you come out with. Never used the boost cheat, whatever that is, came first in plenty of races and won plenty above 5th tier. Yes, the game gets more difficult the further you progress, duh. Can't recommend this game enough, online is a blast.
  • jonsaan #18 3 years ago

Penhalion in utter rubbish claim shocker.

    I m quoting mikll here:

    "@Altrezia and Arwin

    - Just how i feel!!
Motorstorm is sooo much fun I cant understand how one does not like it.

    - Penhalion -- mate u must be seriously lame!!!
not hard at all to win races - maybe hard to win when u first race - but once u know the track and have ' the game feel' then its easy as marmalade!!

  • Darren #20 3 years ago

MotorStorm Pacific Rift is a nice game but the rubber-banding A.I. in the single player does get rather annoying, all too quickly, and tarnishes my enjoyment of the game somewhat.

I really don't understand why developers still use it, surely it's more satisfying to win a race through pure skill rather than 20% skill and 80% luck even in these so called "arcade" games? There's nothing more frustrating than leading a race for two laps then crashing on the last corner of the third and have half the pack overtake you and win.
  • sonmi451 #21 3 years ago

the new demo on PSN has tempted me to purchase.

    was very good.
  • rhubarbandcustard #22 3 years ago

I was thinking of adding Motorstorm 2 to my collection. Love the first one.

Was not aware that the game was dogged by the problems noted by Penhalion.

Hmm, need to Google search this before buying.
  • Yodzilla #23 3 years ago

MotorStorm Pacific Rift is one of the best racing games out there. The thing about it is though, well...

it's not for scrubs. Sorry penhalion.
  • Tiel #24 3 years ago

I'm not coming at this from a fanboy perspective--rubber banding is rubbish, and is for people who always fveel they need a chance to keep up.

It is also a lazy way of balancing a game.
  • ozallez #25 3 years ago

i'm at about the 7th tier, still getting medals but really haven't bothered much with the single player lately. Is there much more to unlock, re vehicles beyond this level? I seem to have most of them now, at least enough to get by online.
and comparing this to Grid? Lol, don't take the piss. That game was garbage!
