Most popular US iPhone games named

Tap Tap Revenge leads in comScore data.

32 per cent of US iTunes App Store users have downloaded Tap Tap Revenge, according to a new report from data firm comScore.

VentureBeat has printed the report's section on the top 25 applications based on market share, measured by their number of installs.

Behind Tap Tap Revenge (which is free), the other most popular games are Touch Hockey: FS5 (26 per cent share), Pac-Man (24), iBowl (24) and Labyrinth (22).

VentureBeat speculates that Tap Tap Revenge's 32 per cent may amount to nearly 5 million downloads based on a recent, separate report that the US iPhone installed base is at the 15 million mark.

So, is Tap Tap Revenge worth it if you haven't played it already? Well, it's free, so you could just spend five minutes finding out. Alternatively, you can check out our review in a recent iPhone Roundup.

Sad to see that more than one year after its lauch, the best the iPhone as to offer - gamewise - is Tap Tap Revenge... Tons of Apps but very few gems !

So by that reasoning, you think that the best other consoles have to offer is "Generic sports franchise:XX" every year?

Sadly, 'Most popular' almost never equates to 'best'.

    @ Wobble

Nope. You are certainly right: most popular does not equate to best (see for example the Prince of Persia trilogy). But still...

Doesn't hurt if your game is free either...

I thought gaming would take off on the iPhone but after downloading several disappointing games it just doesn't seem to be the case. The games are extremely shallow fun-for-five-minute affairs and even the ones I have paid for have very little replay value; Monster Trucks by Red Nytro for example only has 8 levels of 30s each - gets boring very quickly.

I can see word games and board games being better but I don't want to play Sudoku day in day out, I need more than that!

Not exactly a "new" game but Wolf3D is the best game I've played on the iPhone.

Once you get used to the controls (took me about 5 minutes after finding the configuration I like) it's a great example of what can be done with the device in terms of a FPS. Really looking forward to seeing DOOM ported across (I hope) and hopefully someone will take the initiative and create something original along the same lines.

I think we're still waiting for the truly brilliant original iPhone game but I'd be prepared to give it another while yet.
