Mortal Kombat 9 in works, is "sick"

Ed Boon twitters about "M-rated" MK.

Ed Boon, creator of the Mortal Kombat fighting games, has been twittering about the next in the series, promising it will feature "sick", "M-rated" violence.

"People want an M-rated MK... dammit we will give them an M-rated MK," Boon told his followers on Twitter, after revealing that the game - which he refers to as MK9 - was far enough into development for motion-capture sessions to be taking place.

"Motion capturing special moves & fatalities today....they are kind of sick !!" said Boon, before adding, "Carlos & Rick O. doin some kool fatalities. I hope we aren't taking these too far. :( "

"Still...they are sick. :\ "

Boon said the licensing pair-up of last instalment, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, would not be repeated. "MK9 isn't going to have Superheroes in it," he said. It would be a nostalgic game for fans of the series, he suggested. "I think players are definitely going to get the 'warm & fuzzies' when they see, hear, play and 'discover' the next MK."

Mortal Kombat 9 has no platforms or release date as yet.

This is the franchise which survives even bankruptcy. The videogame equivalent of a cockroach, surviving a nuclear blast. Here's hoping it will be good, but all I can picture is a situation equivalent to Muhammad Ali going that one fight too far and it doing irreversible damage to him.

    No sale.
  • menage #2 3 years ago

Bah, selling a game oon it's age rating reeks of Saw/Hostel style crapness. No thanks.
  • IronGiant #3 3 years ago

Hope this sinks without a trace.
  • DutchDemons #4 3 years ago

well, i for one hope Boon sticks to his word and actually delivers a sick MK with the blood & gore that made MK great in the 90's. nobody played MK because it was such a great fighter game.

    bring it!
  • Vordred #5 3 years ago

the MK series needs a complete ground up rework or just die off.

but then they said MK vs. DC would be a brand new fighting engine and all it was still just another cheap and cheesey MK game.

videogame equivalent of a skidmark, worst series ever.

When you have a developer promoting a game's excessive violence as a feature then you know it's not going to be that good. The Mortal Kombat series have always been overrated in my opinion, a mediocre beat 'em up dressed up with fatalities, over-complicated combos and gore. Although it definitely improved slightly going from 2D to 3D, it nevertheless remains a mostly middling franchise that pales alongside the Virtua Fighters, Tekkens, SoulCalburs and even Dead Or Alive. If it wasn't for the cool gore this series would have died a long time ago.

Was never a huge MK fan tbh.
  • kangarootoo #9 3 years ago

Yawn. Ultraviolence as a USP is is so 1995.
  • andijames #10 3 years ago

If this has the playability of Mortal Kombat 2 i may be interested. If not then no. MK2 would make a pretty good PSN download game actually if they upped the resolutions and made it online. Just a thought.

shot on video real fighters - only this could bring back the glory
  • rodpad #12 3 years ago

There hasn't been a decent MK since UMK3/MK Trilogy. Every 3D iteration has sucked hard. At least MK4 adhered to the classic gameplay.
  • Triggerhappytel #13 3 years ago

So, this is going to copy SFIV and go back to pseudo 2D, I suspect - "I think players are definitely going to get the 'warm & fuzzies' when they see, hear, play and 'discover' the next MK."

    *Yawn*

It'll probably still sell well, because much-hyped gore seems to do that whatever the game. I'm also curious as to whether it will be sick? I don't think he mentioned that.

Its sick that he's a grown man and sounds like he's about twleve...

The annoying thing about this is I'm already quite concerned they don't "get" what would make this franchise good again. While MK's previous developers have always been average-good at character design, stages, etc, they've always sucked at actually making a good fighting game. They should worry about game balance and making a game you're going to want to get better at. A good look at Street Fighter (any of them, not just IV) would help.

    This game needs-

-A roster of maybe 12 or so of the best characters
-A storyline reboot back to the beginning, before things got ridiculous
-A good graphics engine and more importantly, a good art style.
    -Solid, kinetic, balanced combat
-Stop with the profound inappropriate use of the letter "K", it's fucking irritating!

MK2 IS a PSN download game, I bought it.

...and promptly found it was absolutely nails and I can barely get past the 3rd round or so. Ok, its a straight arcade port so no fancy features.
  • bad09 #17 3 years ago

Well I'll keep an eye on it but MK died with Trilogy for me.
  • riz23 #18 3 years ago

The hook with MK are the fatalities. They should make sure these, babalities and animalities are pulled off through how you fight and not via a secret 10 button input. Rather like other (good) fighting games. In truth though MK dies a long time ago
  • andijames #19 3 years ago

    @Widge

Didn't know that. Bugger. Ha! Might download it and give it a go. Was it an 'updated' version or just a straight port?
  • DDevil #20 3 years ago

I quite enjoyed MK vs DC. Then SFIV came along and splattered it.

It seems fashionable to think that MK is crap, but i've liked it since it went 3d on the PS2. There's (at least) one thing that the Midway boys understood well, and most others that created fighting games didn't, and that is to create an interesting/fun universe and backstory. And the fighting (from deception on) was actually quite okay, and most certainly not driven by the gorefest that it's made out to be. It's not SC, i'll grant you that, but it's fun and managed to get me through quite a few evenings with my friends. Not to mention the "distractions" like MK puzzle kombat. Good fun. So make it good Ed, i'm quite looking forward to it.

What a shock, Mortal Kombat game has gorey fatalities as it's main selling point.

Mortal Kombat has always been a terrible franchise.

MK 3 is among my top ranked games and MK 2 comes very close behind. Everything went to hell when they switched to 3D and I wish they stop packing the characters from one iteration to the next with all sorts of extra gimmicks, straps, gadgets, satchels and other bullshit thinking that makes them cool. A cool character is Nightwolf as seen in MK 3 because he's a thin native American who could do damage with some nature-drawn powers and had a scary ice-cold glance. He certainly didn't need to be bulkier and full of all crap around him to look like a failed attempt at Gears of War.

So yeah they need an art style that can bring back simplicity, but a well-thought one.

In 2009 Street Fighter 4 has the balls to have 2D gameplay (and even more, King of Fighters 12 has jaw-dropping 2D graphics) and I wish MK 9 will follow in the footsteps of either one of these.

And bring back Sektor and Cyrax :)
  • wellzy4eva #25 3 years ago

I don't want to get boo'ed or anything, but people still play mortal kombat games? everyone I know is still holding out for a good 3d one (And they've been trying for how many years?)

I hope they copy Street Fighter 4 and make it like Ultimate MK3, a combination of the best fighters and not bloody all of them...

I have the Wii edition, that game is all kinds of PWN. All the characters.

I liked MK vs DCU, but it was a bit basic. I'm glad the 9th game is going back to the roots.
  • davisorle #27 3 years ago

Lets hope its worth this time as a decent MK tittle to go buy and enjoy instead of the latest crap.. :S we do need some new decent beat em' up tittles you know.
  • muscleblade #28 3 years ago

    @Darren

Mortal Kombat is not a beat em up.
