More Resistance 2 details emerge

Class-based online squad battles.

Semi-official Sony blog Three Speech has let loose more details of the newly unveiled Resistance: Fall of Man sequel.

Action will take place in the United States, apparently, and feature partially randomised geometry to keep things fresh each time you blast through it.

Those gigantic 60-player online battles will be squad-based, and have you choose your role from one of three classes: a hardy soldier with heavy weaponry, a special ops type for ranged attacks like sniping and a medic.

Resistance 2 will matchmake you with others of your skill too, ensuring you never face a team disproportionately better than yours.

New enemies will also feature, unsurprisingly, such as Chameleon and Stalker baddies with a cloaking ability. Arnold could beat them.

Insomniac has also taken feedback from the first game to improve long checkpoints and the health system, as well as using more of the PS3 power to cram greater numbers of enemies on screen and boost their intelligence to Key Stage 2.

Yesterday US magazine Game Informer revealed its Resistance 2 cover feature, effectively announcing its arrival to the world.

The biggest new additions are a separate eight-player co-operative campaign (or two-player in local mode), and the enormous online battles.

Resistance 2 is due for release this year on PS3, according to Three Speech, and you can see the first shots over in our gallery.

More enemies on screen sounds good to me, as there were quite a few in the first game!

It's Insomiac of course it will.

They have a awesome track record of announcing features and sticking to it, during the development of Resistance 1 the only thing they chopped off from the original feature set was the framerate from 60FPS to 30FPS so they could fit more stuff on (they had it running at 60FPS during E3 I believe.

They even upped the online multiplayer from 32 players to 40.

    60 player....er ok why don't I believe that part.

It sounds to me like arbitrary wow factor numbers that will diminish as the games development continues. Heck I can't even get warhawk to do 32 players consistently. In theory it's possible but, in practive it's usually 8 each side. It was 32 when the servers first opened and only about a few thousand people were playing world wide.

I liked the first game so I'll get it for the single player but, could they at least be honest about the number of players please! Their blurb should read 60 players for the first two minutes after release, then max 16 - 32 after that.

I bet all the fanboys believe it though.

The alien dudes look more scary this time. Are those real screen shots (I know they're scans) from the game or an artistic impression?

Partially randomised geometry could be very interesting, though. I mean there's a reason level designers exist, but if it makes the maps feel fresh and new, I applaud it. Wasn't a very big fan of the first Resistance, but I must say this sounds much more impressive.

    @penhalion
Theres a difference between ability to do something and whether players are interested. I'm sure 60 is what they're gunning for, whether people will want to play in a 60 player match is a different matter. I know I don't speak for everyone - but the only reason I stay away from 32 player warhawk is because tactics go out the window and it becomes team deathmatch.

I'm trying to think of another fps that has had partially randomised geometry everytime you load up a level and I'm coming up with nothing. Can anyone think of another fps that's done that. or is this a first?

    "60 player....er ok why don't I believe that part"

Because skeptisism is fun? Resistance FOM did 40 players in a map, so its not going to be 32 in the sequel is it.

As has been mentioned, their record is sound. If they say 60 I shall assume 60 until facts come along to say otherwise.
  • Beano #13 4 years ago

@kangarootoo: I agree. When R:FoM can do 40 player games 99.5% lagfree, they should be able to push 60 players in R2 since Resistance is 100% dedicated servers since it's basicly a question of more powerfull servers and optimized code to process 50% more players in a single game.
Wether it will be fun or not with more players, is entirely another discussion.... but I'm quite optimistic given the new details :)

Also... Warhawk can easily push 32 players in a single game but since there are many servers online (a good thing IMO) there are simply many games with less players but easier to find a game with available slots. At launch the opposite (less servers but full 32p games) was the case.

They've already said that they're dividing up the 60 man MP into groups so that it feels focused and not too hectic.
  • dionfyre #15 4 years ago

quake 2 managed 64 players at a time years and years ago using your own pc as a server; why should 60 be impossible?
  • kangarootoo #16 4 years ago

"Whether it will be fun or not with more players, is entirely another discussion"

Absolutely. Unbridled it would just be a "I keep getting killed every 3 seconds" shit tip, but as JediMasterMalik has said it sounds like some thought has gone into that side of things too. Hurrah.

Don't get me wrong - looking forward to this (as I'll definitely be buying the first on budget when I buy a PS3) - but I love the idea of absolutely hectic, massive battles. As long as respawns are unlimited and quick, of course. Something about 'uncontrollable chaos' definitely sings to me.

Doesn't stop me from hating spawn-campers, mind...

@penhalion, why don't you believe that part? I think it is because you have an uncontrollable tendency to downplay anything PS3 related. The other day you said you only use your PS3 for PS2 games and Blu ray because all the games you want are on the 360. Now you say, "Heck I can't even get warhawk to do 32 players consistently." I am seeing some inconsistency here. You can not get WH to do 32 players consistently? What is wrong with you? I play Warhawk religiously and have no trouble whatsover playing 32 player games to this day. Tell you what, join the EG clan and we can try to sort out your problem. Resistance already does 40 players, 60 is not that big a jump.
  • Canadian_Mike #19 4 years ago

    Agreed.

40 player Resistance games and 32 player Warhawk games work fine for me as well with zero lag 98% of the time.

Don't enjoy Resistances multi play as much though...i thought it was too easy as a Chimera and too hard as a Human in MP. The Chimera can look through walls, run super fast and it only costs half of your health bar. But im really loving the sound of the huge feature set for this one sine its online system was (and still is) by far the best on PS3!

These guys will deliver in spades, believe it.

    @bioreit

True. Maybe I just suck at games and expect to get killed a lot unless I have some team mates to hide behind :D
