"More Portal for sure" - Valve News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Robert Purchese

31 January, 2008

Valve has said it will definitely be making more Portal, confirming plans to add significantly more than just "a bunch of new puzzles".

Speaking to Eurogamer, spokesperson Doug Lombardi said it was less a matter of if and more a matter of what and when.

"There'll be more Portal, for sure. But the details of that, to be honest, we're still working out," he said.

"The only smart thing we did for Portal was to hire those seven kids and give them the support they needed to make the game."

Unsurprisingly Valve is reluctant to be rushed by a release schedule. It's adopting the same policy for Half-Life 2 finale Episode Three.

"Gordon is our number one guy," said Lombardi. "In Episode One I think we left people with some big questions. After Episode Two people saw it was going somewhere.

"With Episode Three we want to live up to the promise of where we are taking things to; there's a lot of work being done to make sure we deliver on that promise."

He added, "Exact details on what's next for Gordon are a way off; probably months not weeks."

The chances it will all fall into another Orange Box are slim. Valve works to its own timetable and, if multiple projects come to a close around the same time, then potentially it could happen.

One thing you can count on is value. Valve wants all of its additional content to be free, for example, and to ensure gamers know a product with its name on the box is worth buying.

Coming up next are maps for Team Fortress 2, which will be bundled into downloadable packs for PS3 and 360 at some point in the future. For free. (Update: Doug has since informed us that the fate of the maps on console remains "TBD" for now. Apologies.)

Oh, and Lombardi is chuffed you lot praised the individual components of The Orange Box enough to put it high on the list of Eurogamer readers' top games of 2007.

"That's awesome," he exclaimed. "Eurogamer is one of our favourite sites [oh stop you big flirt], and it's a testament to the fact you attract intelligent readers that they chose The Orange Box as their favourite game."

Hehe, he called you intelligent.

Valve is a fantastic company. Them putting pressure on EA to release a framerate patch for the Orange Box PS3 would be great.

It wasn't their favourite. Bioshock was. Then CoD4. The highest Orange Box game was 5th.

I mean, it's wrong, but there it is. Not my fault. I voted for Portal like a good boy.

I guess that if you combined all the votes for The Orange Box + its individual games the it would have come out on top.

I thought that it was slightly unfair on EG to let people vote for The Orange Box AND portal. For example, I voted for The Orange Box because Portal and HL Ep 2 were class, however if I couldn't have voted for The Orange Box then I would have just voted for just portal.

Yup, Doug really knows how to shmooze. ;-)

(I did enjoy the Orange Box though, especially Ep2 and Portal)

TOB isn't a game.

Mm, all this 'best game ever' hyperbole is a bit misinformed, I agree. It's like saying the Blue album is the greatest LP The Beatles ever released - doesn't quite stand up to reasoned assessment.

TOB was a stroke of loving genius, nonetheless, and the Valve adoration is completely justified. If they somehow integrated the Portal gun into Episode Three... I'd weep sweet tears of joy.

it seems highly unlikely they'd shoehorn portals into Ep3, especially if they're expanding Portal into a franchise.

It's also hard to see how you could apply the portal gun to real-world environments without either making them extremely contrived, or completely open to exploitation. "More puzzles" seems like a reasonable way to go.

I'll be honest and say I was expecting at least one more official map by this time. Although I guess the story of the game means they're gonna put a bit more thought into it than just another room with an entrance and an exit.

well I am on a year out now with the Wii.... so I see no danger of missing out on valve content until 2009 when I return to one of the big hitters.

Release dates between episodes is still way too long. I wouldn't have got episode 2 if not for orange box. Even then, portal was the only title in the box I actually liked. Team fortress was initially great fun until the maps started repeating and I realised the balance was way of (spy character anyone!)
