More licensed teams in PES data update News

Xbox 360 PC PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

17 October, 2008

Konami plans to update Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 with new licensed teams and current transfer data in early November. The publisher's announcement suggests it applies to 360, PS3 and PC versions.

Spanish sides Athletico Madrid, Sevilla, Racing Santander and Valladolid join the list of licensed teams, which already includes Liverpool and Manchester United from the English Premier League.

The patch will also update kits and squads for many teams in the game, hopefully putting Berbatov on Man United's books and reinstalling Shevchenko away from Chelsea, to pick on the most noticeable ones.

Konami also plans to add 12 more teams to the licensed UEFA Champions League mode (including Marseille, Juventus and Basel) and add proper Champions League kits and kit markings to give the whole thing a greater air of authenticity.

Check out our Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 review to see what we made of the game, which is out today on PS3, 360 and PC. The PS2 version is out on 31st October and PSP on 7th November (despite what this page said earlier!). A Wii version is due out next spring.

I face a huge dilemma. [well, in gaming terms]
I had a fifa 09 sesh with a buddy last night and I must say it plays an awesome game of footie!

Always been an EVO player, never a FIFA...but I am in two minds about which to pick up today.
EVO has my heart, after playing through 3 seasons with my friend we are huge fans, but fifas physics, graphics, presentation and overall feel are great. Only thing I didn't like is its really tough to score on FIFA! :)

Not sure which to go for.

In the same boat as ya mate. i went with fifa, the new pro evo is just too samey. No reason to buy this one over last years one.
Just go back and play 5. that was the best pro evo ever.

syphaa - I understand what you are saying. I felt exactly the same but bought Fifa09 on the day of release and I love it. I think a lot of people have switched to Fifa for the first time this year because it is going to be the better game. The story here about the updates and more licenced Spanish teams confuses me though - wasnt the whole of La Liga licenced on PES2008? I play as Barca and always play spanish teams so was not too happy to read that they are not all licenced. Think I will give PES2009 a wide berth this year.....

It was with a heavy heart that I dropped Pro Ev after sticking loyally with it for years. FIFA may still not play as well as Pro Ev but it's close enough now in my opnion for all the other bells and whistles that the EA title has that make it a better game overall.

No reason to buy this one over last years one.

PES09 feels ALOT better than PES08, however you can't help but feel this is what PES6 should have been on the Xbox 360.

Despite Fifa's fluff I just can't enjoy it with my mates than I do with Pro Evo, which is good enough for me.

Yes PES 08 was a mess, this year is a much better version in every respect... except no more licensed Newcastle :( (go on, laugh at me).

Love and play both FIFA and Pro Evo.

Only difference is that I never replace Pro Evo with the newest version. Why bother? It's not as if they put any effort into releasing a better version of the game. So FIFA 09 sits next to Pro Evo 6 on my shelf. Both great games. But FIFA is where I spend my money.

If it's any consolation I'd be laughing at you if Tottenham didn't exist.

Same here, i've been Pro Evo now since it was ISS, hadn't played a Fifa since i got '99 free with a new PC, lol, but i PES 2008 was awful so i thought i just wasn't going to bother with a footy game this year... Then i played Fifa '09 on my mates PS3 and it blew me away, finally they've got it correct! Awesome, realistic game. From the demo PES '09 feels better than last years, but still very samey to the whole series, still a great game i can enjoy with a mate, but i wouldn't pay money for it. If you need to buy i new one it's Fifa all the way.

Seems to suggest Chels and Arsehol will be licensed as well? At least for champs league.

The youtube style Legends Theatre sounds pretty cool too :)

Atletico Madrid? Ban the racist bastards !

Juventus? Ban the cheating bastards !

I saw no reason to buy last years, and haven't seen any to buy this years. Shame really, kinda bored with PES6 now...

Got my copy yesterday. Plays beautifully, like old PES. Very responsive players, good runs by AI and huge variation in matches.
Just started the Legend mode which was interesting. Not sure what to make of it yet, but we'll see.

Also cool that you can use your own MP3s in the game, as well as put your own chants in there. Great scope for personalisation, which is important for me.

Kind og annoying I'm stuck at work till six. Just wanna go home and play. :)

A bit of a disgrace really, releasing the game without transfer updates. Its over 6 weeks since the window shut.

Also has anybody noticed Eidur Gudjohnsen isnt in the game?
