More Achievements for Steam

Extra TF2 rewards first up.

Valve has revealed that it will be adding more Achievements to games on Steam, starting with extra rewards for Team Fortress 2 in the coming weeks.

Word came from the company in an emailed response to a fan, who asked whether older titles like Day of Defeat: Source and Half-Life 2 would get the Live-style awards.

"We're planning on adding achievements to all of our games you touched on in your mail," replied Valve. "We're just now coming out of the post-shipping haze, so these should start showing up on Steam pretty quick here."

"We're also planning on adding a bunch more to TF2, starting with an achievement pack for the Medic in the next week or so."

Steam Achievements work in a similar way to their console counterparts. In games like Portal you can also bring up a menu to see what you've achieved so far in life. Just as well you can't do that in the real world, isn't it.

Head over to the official Steam website for more information.

That's good to hear. However, it would be preferable if Steam achievements worked off-line as well. As it stands, you can unlock them only if you are connected to Steam and that seems kind of silly to me.

Steam achievements? Are these the same as live achievements?

Just what I need more pointless achievements. Give me more TF2 maps!

Xerx3s, yes, they are the same for the PC version, at least in Portal (haven't checked Ep.2 and TF2).

I don't get ppl complaining about Achievements, if you don't like ignore them... or what really bothers you is the fact than some ppl enjoy collecting them ?

on-topic: agree, Achievements should be off-line, that way "whiners" wouldn't have absolutly no reason to... whine about it.

Excellent stuff, a bit sad that my percentage will go down from 93% though. :( I'm only missing one achievement so far.

Edit - I don't like the gamerscore, but I think achievements are a great idea.

Exactly. It's like a photo album, I mean, it makes me remember those fun/frustrating afternoons doing "Batle for Caen" @ CoD2 and the latest (grrrr! 5 damn hours!) "Ultimatum" @ CoD4.

I'd certainly welcome some achievements to give me an excuse to play though Half Life 2 again. Not that I need much of an excuse.

    /agree with Malik's post - Score=bad, Achievements=good.

I also only had one to go (the 7 friends at once one) on TF2, but then about a month ago it destroyed all my stats and now they're utterly random, so who knows really.

On a vaguely related note - when will steam sort out the fact it deletes your non-steam games list every time you close the program. EXCEEDINGLY grating. It could also do with implementing a proper stats page, a la x-fire. It was the expectancy of stuff like that made me move from Steam to X-fire, but now it is obvious how much use 3 or 4 years of experience has helped with x-fire.

The deleting of non steam programs seems random to me, perhaps it's after steam updates. I know that the games are still there after a PC restart, so it's not that.

There's lot of cool custom maps like Rugby floating about.

    Malik - you're lucky then :)

On mine and at least 2 more of my mate's pcs the list is completely gone every time the pc is restarted.
