Monster Hunter PSP gets install option

Cue DMC4 PS3 comparisons.

Capcom has revealed that you will be able to install Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G to the PSP memory stick to shorten loading times.

The publisher aired the news at a completion event in Japan, although it's unclear whether you will be able to transfer the entire game and if it will be an optional choice.

Capcom recently came under fire for making PS3 owners install Devil May Cry 4, a process that took just over 20 minutes and improved loading times by one or two seconds.

Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G is an expansion to Monster Hunter Freedom 2 that will offer more nasties to beat up and fresh levels to stampede through.

The action role-playing series is fiendishly popular in Japan, and 2nd G should appear there sometime this year.

However, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G is yet to be given a European release.

Pop over to our Monster Hunter Freedom 2 review for an idea of what to expect.

Actually the install improves load time dramatically. Blu-ray (for all it's great storage capacity) is 4 to 5 times slower than a standard dvd drive. Newer blu-ray drives may end up with the obligatory 4X, 5X or 16X sticker some time next year but, none of that affects the PS3 as it's spec is pretty much set in stone for compatibility reasons.

I guess what I'm getting at is: Why are people upset with capcom for improving their gameplay experience. Without the install, you'd see noticable pauses during loading and diminish your gaming fun.

@Penhalion - I don't think a 2X speed BD drive like the PS3's is 4 to 5 times slower than the 360's 12X speed DVD drive because games like Call of Duty 4 and Assassin's Creed certainly have slower loading times on the PS3 but not drastically so and some games I've played like Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix have identical loading times so it seems to down to how developers place the code on the disc. In my experience, the PS3's BD drive seems to be roughly 25-50% slower than on the 360 when comparing the same games that don't run off an HDD installation.

My first thought is that install doesn't matter for DMC, but then if every game needed it the hard drive would fill quickly, and if you had lots of games on the go then you would end up re-installing all the time.

So at best it should be optional.

Indeed - it is a bizarre backlash.

that's one of the least funny PA comics I've read. I agree I don't get the bitching either, if you can't find something else to do for 20 minutes while the game installs you have way too much time on your hands. Capcom really should have made it optional though.

.::: \o/ This is great news! MHF2 was atrocious with its loading times, even if you did use the prefetch option.

I would rather sit through an install than put up with in game loading.

Oh dear I hope the 'seek time fanboys' from that other thread don't make a return.

The DMC4 experience is improved by having little to no pauses between screens, thats all I care about.

    Spinnnnn it!
  • Kenshin001 #12 4 years ago

Dizzy, if you had read enough of Penhalion's comments you would realise he is one of you. The "Blu-ray is 4-5 times slower than DVD" FUD should have given it away.

Less UMD access also means longer battery life, incidentally.

"that's one of the least funny PA comics I've read."

And that's saying something given how much unfunny crap PA churn out.

    @Chufty

Not sure about that, memory stick access seems to run mine down more than occasional UMD spinning, least thats my experience of some PS1 titles. Could be my cheap memory stick mind.
