Monster Hunter 2 for Europe

PSP antics in September.

Capcom will be bringing the second game in the outrageously successful Monster Hunter Freedom series to European PSPs in September.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 will be bigger than the original by up to 50 percent, offering stacks of new content and options, plus new PlayStation Network functionality means you'll also be able to download and add even more life to the game.

The game pits you up against progressively more fierce creatures in wild and varied environments, while letting you customise and advance your characters' skills and abilities as you journey through the game. You can face scores of quests alone, or you can use the handheld's wireless multiplayer to team up with three friends and battle grizzly-nasties together.

The first game sold more than 2.4 million copies in Japan, making it the most successful PSP game ever there, boiling down to about one game for every five handhelds sold. The sequel has since smashed records that the original set, by shifting more than 700,000 games in its opening week.

Monster Hunter Freedom launched last year in Europe to above average reviews, being perhaps slightly difficult, whilst also having camera and control frustrations. You can find our review elsewhere on the site.

Meanwhile you can quest over to our gallery for the latest screenshots of the game.

No, no, this must be a mistake. No one buys PSP games, and the PSP itself is dead.

I think that 2.4 million is for all previous Monster Hunter games across the PSP and PS2, rather than just Monster Hunter portable. Still pretty impressive though.

Feanor I'm eagerly awaiting Media Create or something because i can't believe that myself, there were Japanese people queuing outside the shops you'd mistaken them waiting for a Wii. o_O

I found this game to be complete arse on both PS2 and PSP.

On a more positive note I bought Daxter yesterday and so far its excellent.

While i love and own both the ps2 version and the PSP version of this, in the back of my mind i can't help wishing that it was more persistently online.

At least in a guild wars fashion.

Have to agree - I thought this was junk as well.

    The loading times were terrible.
  • dadrester #9 5 years ago

why isn't this online... like PSO online?! why!
  • mechamonkey #10 5 years ago

The first was absolutely the most underrated PSP game ever, it just gives and gives after the admittedly horrific learning curve and terrible first few missions.

Multiplayer online is a must this time

Well whats to say, hardly any loading (always a good thing on PSP hehe). Graphics and animation are quite lovely. You have to use the analogue nub but thankfully so far that hasn't proven too bad. Its good fun but not very hard. Although there should be a reasonable challenge in collecting everything (if that floats your boat).

Its pretty much an old-school platformer e.g. the combat is very simple and the AI is virtually non existant. But its good fun and doesn't suffer from the usual bane(s) of PSP games (crap camera, broken controls, eternal loading).

So in summary good game (now only 20 quid) if you liked Jak and Daxter I'm fairly certain you'll love this.

    Better flipping have online play.

    the first one was cool.

How 'online' is this game? Is it like PSO/Diablo with an online lobby? Or is it just local network multiplayer? Persistent character? etc :)

I could say the same with most of the games in the top ten of the Japanese charts.

Officially this game doesn't have online i think, but you can jump through hoops to get online.

I got tired of the first game and sold it eventually. It was too difficult and combat was cumbersome for me, if the combat is smoother this time round then count me in.

A turning point for PSP in Japan? Unbelievable how good this game sold o_O

Yet another PSP game which might make me buy the console.

There seems to be lots of these, but no single killer app which makes me think I need one.

Actually the lack of a jump button would rule this out as a platformer.
The AI is superior to the majority of games.
Have you even played this great game any further than the tutorials, you knob.
