Monkey Island now available for iPhone

Yours for just under a fiver.

LucasArts has released an iPhone version of The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition.

It's now available in the App Store for £4.99.

As with the PC and Xbox Live games you can expect overhauled graphics, a remastered soundtrack and hints. Those who don't hold with this sort of new-fangled mucking about can play the game in Classic mode so it's just like the old days.

The Xbox 360 version of Monkey Island: Special Edition scored a whopping 9/10 - read our review to find out what the big deal is.

Worst control scheme ever, but at least the game does arrive intact from the console version including dynamically swapping between the original and the new one.

EDIT: Having played it further I take this back now. The controls are fine, just a few niggles to get used to, but still the same brilliant game underneath, currently playing this through in parallel on X360 and iPhone :)

PSN release please! Seriously... Is it more profitable to release something on iPhone than for a home console now? Maybe it is, but I still find that odd.

Read the headline and immediately downloaded, then read Ninja_Tino's comment...bah!

I shall return, once I determine how bovine Monkey Island iPhone really is.

Nearly impulse bought this today. Would really like this on the PS3 if possible but if not i guess it's a good game to play on the go :)

Anyone know how many it sold on XBLA?

If it comes out on PS3, it should be compatible with PSP.

Although, of course, both MI and MI2 are playable on the PSP already in ScummVM.

    No demo? That sucks.

Can't see the issue with the controls at all. Plays very well for an iPhone version of a 19 year old game. Tap to walk, double tap to use context-specific control (i.e. open, talk to), swipe with two fingers to change from SE to Classic view.

Obviously, the better version is the PC/360 version as this is watered down slightly but a talkie SMI on the iPhone for £4.99 is nothing to scoff about... More of this please!

"If it comes out on PS3, it should be compatible with PSP. "

    Why?

PSP/PS3 "compatible" games are only PSone classics.

I would buy it if I hadn't just bought it for XBLA and completed it already.

Ok, I've had a little play on it...

While it's not the ideal control system, it certainly does not detract from the enjoyment of the experience in anyway.
Control becomes easier with time. Ignatius_Cheese sums it up well, it plays well and I'd buy more like this.

If I avoid my morning coffee for two days, this is paid for.

I'm ok with the controls although I think they could have dropped the cursor. The double tap is a little too quick too and I don't know how to turn the speed down.

Mentalist - every time you have laughed in your life has been a Monkey Island demo.

The controls are slightly cumbersome, but you definitely still need a cursor instead of just finger tapping. The finger is just too massive to select so accurately, and you can't do the classic point-and-click cursor waving to find things to interact with.

Could definitely do with a sensitivity slider, but other than that and the ultra fast double click, I'm not fussed as it's hardly twitch-gaming and the jokes aren't impacted at all.

    @Beano

"should" as in "they should make it to be" compatible with PSP/PS3
