Molyneux's next game to show at GDC?

It'll be "politically contentious" if it does.

Two years ago he said he'd be "killed to death" if he revealed what Lionhead was working on besides Fable 2, but now it sounds like veteran developer Peter Molyneux may get his chance as soon as the Game Developers Conference in March.

Speaking to Kikizo, Molyneux reportedly said that the game could be unveiled at GDC, but that Microsoft wants "shock and awe" when the wraps are whipped off, so the timing is not yet set in stone.

However, he did continue to talk about the game he can't talk about, despite his obvious agony at having to generalise. It's "unbelievably ambitious", "there's nothing else remotely like it ever before", and "this will be really, politically contentious". We only hope it has another dog in it. Our Fable one's called Boris.

Molyneux has also hinted recently that Fable will probably continue. "We've got plans for Fables 3, 4 and 5 actually," he said at E3.

In the meantime, however, there's the small matter of Fable 2, due out next Friday, 24th October. You can catch up on our most recent impressions on the Fable 2 gamepage, and look out for our review a few days before release.

If he keeps talking this up it just going to be disapointing when we finally see it. There's nothing wrong with being excited about your project but you can go too far...

MUM, PETER'S TALKING BOLLOCKS AGAIN. TELL HIM TO STOP.
  • InfiniteFury #4 3 years ago

You know, Peter Molyneux winds me up as much as the next man but for all his faults I still feel the industry is better for having people like him in it than not. I think he gets a little too much bashing on here, almost by default. If he came out and announced the price for a game release people would say "Uh-oh, Peter's spoken again, watch this fuck up".

He's a big ideas man, sometimes they come off, sometimes they fall on their arse but at the end of the day where he innovates and succeeds it doesn't always gets noticed but when he fails, someone else may pick up the idea down the line and run with it in a different, more successful direction. He's a big thinker of the industry and wants to push the concept of games further.

A PR man he is not but despite the sometimes false hopes, I like having a passionate person talking to the press rather than another suit.

Sorry I've been meaning to post something like that in a Molyneux article for some time, this one's as good as any.

You guys can whine all you want... Peter made some of the "classics" in the industry. I love his ideas. When you guys can do better, come back and whine.

Some of his games have been great, some have not (like most devs) but they all have had a central idea of expanding AI and removing some of the constraints that other games take for granted. I look forward to his next game idea. TBH he should get together with Introversion, they have very similar ideas.

Microsoft want a 'shock & awe' announcement?

wow that sounds extremely crass and given the context it was first coined, probably not the best of tastes...

"When you guys can do better, come back and whine. "

Oh ffs, please stop wheeling the same old line out every time. A gamer does not need to make games in order to comment about or critique them, and that goes for commenting on critiquing the industry as a whole.

Do I need to be a chef before I can say whether I like fish soup? Do I need to be an engineer before I can give my opinion of a car? Of course bloody not.

Its got nothing to do with being politically correct.

You are basically saying that people shouldn't critisise PM unless they themselves are a game making legend. And you do it everytime there is a PM related comments thread.

And everytime, I end up saying the same thing as well...... ah.... shit.

    /is easy to control

I need to start breaking my habitual rant patterns. Its not big or clever.

    @InfiniteFury

I agree wholeheartedly. Even though his comments often make me cringe, I think it's great that we have people like him in the industry. He may over promise and under deliver, but at least he isn't afraid to have big ideas, which are becoming rarer with the huge amount of money required for developing modern games making risks harder to take.

The man's got charisma. He's alright. If after hyping a product then seeing everyone's reaction as different, a la Fable, he'll openly admit his mistakes. Looking very forward to Fable 2 now that it's so near. Swapping between that and LBP as my mood fits will be lovely.

"We've got plans for Fables 3, 4 and 5 actually,"

And people say halo is getting milked?

He aint even got Fable 2 on the shelves yet and he's already on about 3,4 and 5.

When Fable 3 comes out it's time to get some revenge.

    Oh please not more fable.

They're milking that franchise, who wants more of the same?

and that sort of thing ;)

I can't wait until next friday, MY housemates won't see me all weekend!
  • Negotiator #14 3 years ago

As long as Fable 2 is brilliant, meaning 9, OR 10, he can say what he wants.
  • InfiniteFury #15 3 years ago

"A PR man he is not"

Actually I'm taking this bit back. When was the last time EG didn't print a Molyneux/Lionhead press release or opinion? The man's a PR manager's wet-dream.

According to the people I know with review copies, Fable II is absolutely awesome and by far the best game Molyneux's ever done. Which is nice.
  • Evolution #17 3 years ago

"unbelievably ambitious" - Has he ever made a game that hasn't been?
  • CapnCloudchaser #18 3 years ago

It's out next Friday? OMG I have no tiiiiimmmmeeeee left for anything!

    /cries

I love Peter Molyneux and agree that gaming news would be pretty boring without people like him. Will people still complain if Fable is an awesome game? Yep, course they will.
  • Negotiator #19 3 years ago

Eighthours are you telling the truth about "people you know" with review copies, if so, good news.

I plan on playing F2, so I'm glad to hear its turning out well (tbh, it kind of looked very much like it would). Its worth bearing in mind though the efforts of quite a large team in making it a fun game. I'm sure PM has his unfluence, but the fate of the game is probnably held in rather more than just two hands.

"Apparently OXM magazine has given it a 9.5, which is hardly surprising from an official magazine but still good none the less"

Official magazines are about as objective as a mother penguin. ESPECIALLY when it comes to platform exclusive games.

Microsoft wants "shock and awe" when the wraps are whipped off, so the timing is not yet set in stone.

    From the Wikipedia:
Shock and awe, technically known as rapid dominance, is a military doctrine based on the use of overwhelming power, dominant battlefield awareness, dominant maneuvers, and spectacular displays of force to paralyze an adversary's perception of the battlefield and destroy its will to fight

SDF, take advantage of this knowledge ;)
