Molyneux names more Fable 2 XBLA titles

Plus lots of fresh details.

Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux has revealed there will be a total of three Xbox Live Arcade games that will let you earn money for use in Fable 2.

He unveiled the first of these, Keystone, at GDC in February, and uncovered plans for two more in the recent Major Nelson podcast.

"The idea is this: Carbonated Games, part of Microsoft, have made some great casual games, Arcade titles. They have got three titles, one called Keystone, one called Wizard's Tower and one called Mage Dice," said Molyneux.

These "semi-gambling" games will reward you with Fable gold if you win. When Fable 2 eventually comes out (sometime this autumn), you will be able to use your accrued funds in game.

"If you do a good job, you can be a millionaire before the game starts," promised Molyneux. You can then use your piles of gold to buy virtually anything in Fable 2 (on top of weapons and armour and traditional fare).

Anything from dungeons to castles to shops are up for grabs, and splashing out on them will unlock side-quests to explore. As for houses, well, take your pick.

"You can buy every house. There's the city of Bowstone; all the houses that you can get to you can buy," added Molyneux.

"If you buy all of those houses you're known as the Mayor of Bowstone. If you end up buying everything in the region you are known as the King of Bowstone. And if you buy everything in the land of Albion you are known as the Emperor of Albion."

Not all of you will get that far, suggested Molyneux, although he expects at least "a few" of you to make the effort.

But beware, spending too much time worrying about your bank balance will alter your appearance and have you looking a bit like Bill Gates, he joked. "Every choice has a consequence," he reminded us.

Molyneux went on to detail the three major ways Fable 2 will distinguish itself from the original: by adding a sense of emotional drama using mechanics such as the dog and family relationships; by adding a "much, much better" combat system that is both simple and deep; and by adding jump-in co-operative play.

One thing he didn't mention at GDC recently was the Breadcrumb Trail feature. This is a sort of personal GPS that leads you to your quest destination. Interestingly your dog will try to pull you off this straight and narrow and lead you to side-quests.

This is the same dog that will leap on floored opponents, love you without question, and act as a warning mechanism. "Dogs in films always know that aliens are aliens," added Molyneux, suggesting that this will be a feature put to use in the main story.

Another thing to note about co-op is that it will cast the person joining your world as a henchman, but it will be based on statistics from their saved game if it detects one. Then, when they leave your world, they will take all the gold and experience they have earned with them; you take your character around with you, effectively.

Peter Molyneux was also keen to point out that his team prints out and shares what the community has been saying fairly regularly. Hi Peter! Invisibility over laser-eyes, still?

And, in case you were wondering, Peter has an unnatural hatred of chickens because his mum used to leave him in a pram near a chicken ranch, so his first words were clucks.

"Chicken cruelty is always featured highly in my games," cackled Molyneux.

The concept of connecting performance in one game to progress is another is great, but I can't help finding that a cnynic light has turned on in my head.

If I decide that I DON'T want to buy or play these XBLA games... can I still make the sums of money required to become Mayor of Bowstone?

I guess it all comes down to the numbers. PM talks about being a millionaire before the game starts, but of course these XBLA games could earn you peanuts compared to the gold accrued in the game itself. I kind of hope that is the case, as I don't really want to find myself struggling to buy anything in Fable 2 unless I also buy some XBLA games and grind away at them.

Oh, jump in coop is great btw. Just so I'm not being entirely grumpy about this.
  • LeeroyJenkins #3 4 years ago

Great. So I have to spend £40 on the actual game, then another £20 on these xbox live arcade games... so Fable 2 becomes a £60+ game. This wreaks of cheap money-making tactics...

... I bet those mini-games were in Fable 2 in the first place and got ripped out to a) make more money. b) Get this kind of marketing hype. c) Allow Molyneux to open his exaggerating gob about it all.

I think this all depends on whether they are free or not really.

He seems to be touting them as something essential to the experience of the game, yet if I have to spend more money on top of the 40 odd quid I already paid for Fable 2 then they can fuck right off.

I think these are really great little additions to the game - I don't know if I'll be arsed to buy three XBLA games to improve my Fable finances, but it's nice that they're interacting like that. Personally I think the one-button (ish) comabt, the co-op, and especially the dog are better additions.

But as I've been playing Fable a lot recently, I just hope they fix some of the more broken aspects, like aging. It's daft that by the time you reach the end of Fable you're about 60 and everyone is still calling you "boy", and there are kids in the world that haven't aged at all. If I'm growing old, everyone else needs to - my child needs to grow up, for example. Having said that, I hope aging takes a lot longer - the fact that there are now seasons suggests to me it will, maybe four times as long. Otherwise you'd go away on one quest, come back home, and you're kid's suddenly an adult!

Oh, and can I co-op with a mate and get him preggers?!

I'm sure these will be excellent, high quality XBLA titles, and not at all cheap, quick cash-ins on an established franchise by Microsoft. Microsoft would never do something like that.
  • oceanmotion #7 4 years ago

I doubt they would be deep enough to charge for. I would guess free and part of the PR build up to hype the game.

Isn't Chicken Ranch a popular American euphemism for brothel? There was a chicken ranch based strip club in GTA:SA, as I recall.

Indeed it is, if not popular, then at least well known:

    "a chicken ranch"

Eh? surely a Chicken Farm for those who are not linguistically challenged colonial types?
  • Peew971 #11 4 years ago

@LeeroyJenkins: You don't have to buy the XBLA games, the same way you don't have to buy extra levels or maps on Marketplace. It's a choice, quite whining.

Being gambling games would it be possible to lose money?
I guess you could start the game with negative riches

"The coop idea sounds excellent, helping my spouse on a quest or battle and walking away with the experiance and booty is awesome."

Expensive too - two 360s, tvs and copies of the game...

Mate, you play on the same machine...not system link
  • MrChuckles #16 4 years ago

I believe you get basic versions of the games IN Fable 2, but you can go the whole hog and upgrade to the xbox live vesions with leaderboards/competitions/achievements outside the game.

So, no £60+ game. Also, if you just want some neat gambling games you don't have to buy Fable to play them.

Anyway, i 'think' that is how they will work.
  • ParanoidZombie #17 4 years ago

I guess there will be an "emperor of albion" achievement, then... this one is gonna be very time-consuming.
  • kangarootoo #18 4 years ago

    @Peew971

Bad examples. Whether or not you buy extra maps doesn't affect your enjoyment of the existing maps. That is because they are seperate entities. In game currency is global throughout the game. Its not the same thing.

I don't know what the outcome will be, it all comes down to balancing the stats of the game. But if I find I can never afford posh swords and new houses in Fable 2 because I haven't earned money via some XBLA game, its not a free choice.

I wait to see if the games are free or not. If they aren't, I shall feel very skeptical about the whole thing.
  • ronuds #19 4 years ago

My guess is at least one of these games will be free, but I don't know. PM did say at some point that these games could be integrated directly into the Fable world, which would be cool. So, you walk up to a bar and start playing an XBLA game.

If all else fails, PM also said you can earn money by getting a job, so gambling and paying for XBLA titles isn't the only way to earn Fable money.

That would be nifty, though I think PGR3 got there first with Geometry Wars in your garage arcade cabinet.

Technically, Day of the Tentacle might have pipped them all with Maniac Mansion embedded in an in-game arcade cabinet. Anyone got an earlier example?

    Earliest example

The Apple mini game in the garden of eden.

"The concept of connecting performance in one game to progress is another is great, but I can't help finding that a cnynic light has turned on in my head."

I really don’t see why it’s a great concept. It seems rather contrived and arbitrary to me. Mini games have been used in the past for the same goals and I don’t see what selling those mini games separately adds (for the player).
  • kangarootoo #24 4 years ago

    @penhalion

Was that a proper game that was playable externally? Mini-games that only appear within another title don't count :)

    @Les

What I like about the idea is the way in which the games can be approached. E.g. I've never played game A, but when I finally do I discover that game B (which I've been playing all along) is connected.

A built in mini-game is serving a purpose, but you only ever play it in the context of the game in which it is embedded. Using your Wii Mii in a Wii sports title is along the same lines as what I am describing. Its just general connectivity that can make a player go "ooh, thats cool".

I'm not saying its like a diamond dipped in chocolate brought to you by Jessica Biel on a skate board. I'm just saying its a nice idea.

Edit: P.s. Games themselves are contrived and arbitrary. Neither are a bad thing in the pursuit of fun.

With that I agree. But in your original post you mentioned things like connecting performance in one to progress in another. That isn't a good thing IMO. It can seriously disrupt the play balance if the titles are not tightly linked. But if they are tightly linked they should be part of the same package.

From the above article I get the impression that those titles have nothing to do with Fable 2 whatsoever. That's why I call it contrived and arbitrary. Why not add points scored in Space Giraffe or Geometry Wars? Or better yet, convert gamerscore points into Fable 2 gold... Games should be good enough to play on their own and not need some poor, contrived link in order to generate some extra cash.
  • RazorObsession #26 4 years ago

this is something that could be abused by mega corporationy types, but as its a kind of prototype, i doubt they would rip us off, and put us all off the idea before its had a chance to snowball.

and for the record, you can get a job in game, to earn money, or be somebody elses henchman, in order to be able to afford something. just like in real life you will have to save up for the best items, or just in like in real life, you can gamble what little you have to make a mint, or lose it all.

if you cant lose it all and become destitute, making it all one sided, then yeah it is a scam.

P.S. does anyone reckon that GTAIV will have the original 2D top down GTA as a mini game within a game? i got five on it, bitches.
