Modern Warfare Wii co-op detailed

Plus: 30fps, Conduit-style controls.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for Wii features a co-operative mode where a second player can pick up a remote and start brapping at any time.

Executive producer Daniel Suarez likens the Squad Mate concept to "Super Mario Galaxy's support mode" on Kotaku.

The second player can fire at enemies with the remote, pointing a different-coloured reticule to player one's, although he or she can't keep dropping fools when the main player is zoomed in for sniping.

Otherwise Modern Warfare for Wii, which is due out on 10th November, is a feature-complete port, including the requisite multiplayer modes and content. It even has host migration online and runs at a solid 30fps.

Controls are fully changeable too. "Since Conduit people want to be able to customise their controls," Suarez told Kotaku. "So we've given them the developer's toolbox. You can change everything."

Also out on 10th November, of course, is Modern Warfare 2, which we saw for all of two minutes during gamescom. Short but sweet.

What were you expecting? All things considered, 30FPS with those graphics isn't bad.

The fact that they're even bothering with a Wii version might seem illogical to some. However, Call of Duty is rapidly becoming a 'known' brand among the mainstream, so it makes sense to try and take advantage of that and target the Wii crowd.

Deja Vu. I'm sure I just read all of these comments on the NeoGAF thread the OP linked to. : )

It is good that Call of Duty: MW2 is coming out on the Wii. The console's core audience are not going to be bothered about last gen visuals or a 30 fps framerate and if you own a PC, PS3 or Xbox 360 as well then the Wii version probably won't even have been a consideration anyway.

@MilkybKid1985 - The Metroid Prime games, being Nintendo exclusives, were designed around the limitations of the Gamecube and Wii. CoD: MW2 is clearly a current gen multiformat game that the devs have managed to get running on the Wii so it's no surprise that it doesn't measure up to the exclusive games.

Metroid Prime's graphics are cartoonish looking (but very lovely all the same), the environments are more enclosed with long corridors and doors separating the different areas plus there's nowhere near as many enemies to shoot as a typical CoD game. That's because the Metroid Prime games aren't first-person shooters as such, there's a big emphasis on exploration and puzzle solving which means the game doesn't have to keep throwing dozens and dozens of enemies at you to keep you entertained.

Inexplicably low-res textures aside... the potential for true dual-wielding as a lone player sounds like fun.

*edit* Er, forget that: it wouldn't be nearly as much fun as watching said lone player try to point two wiimotes AND move around with the nunchuk...

I don't consider a Wii version surprising, the system has 50% of the home console market after all. Theoretically they could allocate as much money for the Wii version as they did for the other versions though it's not necessary because you could make a full quality Wii game with 60% less investment.

Multiple gunners from the same viewpoint is what I've been suggesting for The Conduit too, after all even if the framerate couldn't support two views simultaneously adding a second cursor and a few more bullets won't cause a big hit.

It's funny how the Wii is reversing the trend of making console controls completely locked though I'm not sure this whole "make your own controls" approach is without flaws, The Conduit got away with terrible default controls and I suspect many people don't bring the patience to screw with that or the knowledge to understand all the different sliders.

It is good that Call of Duty: MW2 is coming out on the Wii.

You got that wrong, MW1 is coming and they're saying if it sells well they'll make MW2 for the Wii as well (presumably by the time MW3 arrives on other systems).

The Metroid Prime games, being Nintendo exclusives, were designed around the limitations of the Gamecube and Wii. CoD: MW2 is clearly a current gen multiformat game that the devs have managed to get running on the Wii so it's no surprise that it doesn't measure up to the exclusive games.

Still a very shoddy result. They have to remake everything anyway so they can just as well make it good.

@KDR_11k - My bad about referring to CoD: MW2, I did mean CoD: MW. /oops

As for CoD:MW, I assume that the core game is identical to the original so it may be that the devs have had to compromise the graphical quality and framerate in order to keep the same large open areas and number of enemies on-screen? Regardless, CoD: MW was not designed with the Wii in mind, which was my original point.

I bet they don't try and shove up the RRP on this version.

I'm not sure, the meshes look decent but the textures are blurry, more enemies on the screen wouldn't increase the texture memory usage because they'd all use the same textures anyway.

Doesn't the shopto link show MW2 for Wii? Is that right?

And besides, Metroid might have been running far better but I bet there's a lot less actually going on in the Metroid world in terms of enemy AI alone which the Wii can't devote time to make look as pretty as Metroid.

I'm very much up for this.

    "Conduit style controls"?

So its going to be a totally broken game then? MEGALOLZ!
  • Darrengamer #14 3 years ago

You wouldn't get any waggle on my PC. My PC is so good that it doesn't even know what screen tear is, because it doesn't tear, because my PC is teh bestest
  • Ryze #15 3 years ago

Sounds like it's worth a 'brappp'.

    :D
  • Iain815 #16 3 years ago

The screenshots are a fucking joke. Christ, PSP games look better!
  • varsas #17 3 years ago

@Darrengamer: You must be thinking of something else because the Conduit wasn't broken; just a mediocre game...like most FPS games.
  • comissars_handgun #18 3 years ago

I'd buy this if I hadn't already played it to death on my 360. Couldn't they have made a new game with the Call of Duty name?
  • itsfuzzy #19 3 years ago

The good people in Nintendo and Activision have a sense of humor releasing this!

Since the Wii gets some of the most anticipated games in the next month like Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, New Super Mario Bros, Final Fantasy: The Crystal Bearers, Monster Hunter Tri, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Metroid Prime Triology, Tales of Graces, Red Steel 2, No More Heroes 2,Sin and Punishment 2, etc. etc.

Because of these new games. I don't see enough people who are willing to buy such an old game for the Wii. Especially when it's technically dont even try to take advantage of the Wii graphics. Yes the graphics are better than PS2 or PSP are capable of, but even the gamecube could show this graphics.

There are so many graphically astonishing games for the Wii on their way ... so no, activision this MW for the Wii is not a hit.

I think this is going to be shite. Cross platform games, with a few exceptions, are not for the Wii.
