MW2's unlimited ammo bug under scrutiny

"Eliminated soon enough," says Bowling.

Infinity Ward knows about the unlimited ammo bug in Modern Warfare 2 and is working hard on a solution.

"Yes, it'll be eliminated soon enough," the developer's community liaison Robert Bowling said on his Twitter.

The bug, spotted by increasing numbers of gamers on forums (thanks, Kotaku), breaks ammo counters and in some cases removes them entirely - meaning the bullets never run out.

Apparently this originates from modded consoles but can spread to non-tampered machines while playing online. The bug manifests differently for obedient gamers, however, who'll have to reboot their machine and clear the cache to rid themselves of the glitch.

Why is this game getting each and every bug in it reported as 'news'?
  • VandelayIndustries #2 2 years ago

How about the one that puts you into a 18 player free for all on Rust?
  • Spydy #3 2 years ago

Had some fun with that last night. Infinite AC130 ammo > almost everything.

  • LiveForever #4 2 years ago

Dont search for ground war to avoid the 18 player free for all on rust.
  • Peew971 #5 2 years ago

This is getting down the Gears 2 route, one more glitch and I'm done with this game.
  • wizlon #6 2 years ago

maybe we should hold off on the MW2 glitches and just have a MW2 Glitch Roundup in a week or so?
  • penhalion #7 2 years ago

    @EarlBassett

Can't you tell from the comments section of the '2009 top five games' that your readers are not that interested in this game as much as you think?

Well said that disembodied voice! I got my head bitten off by the MW2 faithful for pointing out that the MW crowd is actually just a small vocall miniroty of actual gamers and that a lot of us simply aren't interested in this game to the extent the news suggests.

The sales of games like Assassins 2, borderlands etc. etc vindicate this view. Constantly pushing a single game doesn't make it the best game ever! Even metacritic (the force all fanboys swear by) has already been shown to have the least influence to someones buying habits than anything, with word of mouth from friends being top.

So please EG just STFU about MW for two minutes...can you do that?...can you?
  • solidSnake04 #8 2 years ago

18 player free for all sounds amazing if you ask me...
  • paketep #9 2 years ago

"eliminated soon enough"?. Is that what the mighty liar is spewing nowadays?.

And here I thought that IWNet was uncrackable and unhackable. Guess that what I get for believing what fourzerotwo says.
  • kangarootoo #10 2 years ago

I second not reporting the progress of every MW2 bug as if it is news. I'm sure MW2 has a perfectly good official forum for that sort of thing.
  • bodypopper #11 2 years ago

I assume EG gets a lot of hits for stories about the multi-million selling and hardlly niche game that is Modern Warfare 2.
Websites like hits you know, it's what makes them worth it for advertisers.
No ads, no Eurogamer. That's business, people. Deal with it. Or go somewhere else.
  • GamerG #12 2 years ago

i never survive long enougth to run out of ammo :-(
  • ignatiusjreilly #13 2 years ago

Exactly. You can say people aren't all that interested in MW2, but I'm sure eurogamer can give you site stats thatt disprove that.
  • Artemus #14 2 years ago

Congrats you've made it into the MW2 beta! The beta will begin November 10th 2009.
  • hiddenranbir #15 2 years ago

Oh, they won't be banning people for it this time?

the "MW2 crowd" is 6 million strong and growing by the day. there may be a lot of gamers not interested in MW2 news, but given the extremely high number of people buying it and playing it online, glitches are newsworthy.
  • kangarootoo #17 2 years ago

Then how about EG keep a pinned MW2 glitches page that they update with no info?

    Everybody wins.
  • Skurmedel #18 2 years ago

On the other hand, wouldn't any active MW2 player already know about this glitch?
  • icematt12 #19 2 years ago

Two sides to this. On the plus side they are advertising continued work but on the bad side it's showing very frustrating things if used by the enemy. Hope I don't see M204 spam in HQ.
  • justsomeone #20 2 years ago

err - which console is this occurring on? isn't this a cross platform game? at least explain the issue if you're going to report such slight "news" - that might help to pad it out and actually make it interesting.

Don't the sales numbers of MW2 kind of disprove your argument? You don't like it. Groovy. Other people don't like it. Groovy. But to say that the biggest selling game of the year, a game that reached 6+million in sales far quicker than any other game in the history of video games, is only of interest to a "vocal minority" seems pretty, well, wrong.

In fact, it seems based on the sales numbers the game is of interest to MORE people than all all other games this year. Heck, it sold more than AC2 and Boarderlands combined . . . how can you say that those games are of more interest to the "majority" of gamers?

Judging by the MW2 sales, this is the vocal minority.
  • MattyD #23 2 years ago

To be fair to IW, this isn't a 'glitch' or bug in the game, it's a crack. Not just anybody can do it, but you can 'catch' it by playing with someone who has done it or caught it and hasn't cleared their HDD cache. And it's only the 360 version that's affected afaik.

If EG bothered researching their news instead of paraphrasing articles off Kotaku they'd have been able to tell you so.
  • Zaiz #24 2 years ago

Oh, even better, my roommate searched Team Tactical and ended up in 18 player Rust. It had the domination flags, but was called TDM. They got 250+ plus domination points, and most people had 40+ kills, but the game just kept rolling on. I was tremendously amused. It only ended because a Host Migration failed, dumping everyone out of the game, and resulting in an 18 man party in Team Tactical. Funny. Mind you, the lobby got broken up ten seconds later.
  • SleepyDeathFred #25 2 years ago

Can we nerf the 1887s now please?
  • davisorle #26 2 years ago

    @mkreku - wizlon - penhalion - GamerG

LOLed at all your posts. Awesome. Got much more from the comments by shitloads than from the article itself.
  • KDR_11k #27 2 years ago

I hope the next story will be Bowling disemboweling himself.
  • Adman #28 2 years ago

    @SleepyDeathFred

They're working on nerfing them, so says fourzerotwo on twitter. Guessing this bug will take priority though.
  • freakzilla #29 2 years ago

NO PUBLIC BETA! ... I know you don't mind, too busy wiping your ass with $100 bills.
  • Jonny5Alive7 #30 2 years ago

I'm glad this news story was on, didn't know about this glitch. If it does happen to me I will try my best NOT to reboot! If you don't want to know about MW2 news then don't read it, it hardly does you any harm to move your eyes slightly further down the screen to the next news item.
  • SleepyDeathFred #31 2 years ago

    @Adman

Cheers - best (game-related) news I've heard all week!
  • Skurmedel #32 2 years ago

Evil modded console says: all your news are belong to us
  • bobmar360 #33 2 years ago

    Most online played game 09/10

    that will be fact
  • dupplawt #34 2 years ago

I had this 'bug' last night and it stayed all night, people joined and we actually thought it was more fun with unlimited rifle grenades, it was completely mental! The map was just rocking like an Earthquake and it really was like 'OH SHIT' when someone got an AC130.
  • DrDamn #35 2 years ago

How very dare EG write a news article on a games related topic about one of the best selling games of the year. They force us in here to read it and then have the audacity to make us comment on it too. Whinge, whinge, whine, whine ... whine.

It's not like it's not clear from the new item title what it's about, just don't read the article if you aren't interested. Sales of the game say there are plenty of people who are.
  • Munn #36 2 years ago

People who dislike MW2 should not be complaining about this article... If anything, it is discouraging people from buying it.
  • jambo74 #37 2 years ago

This happened last night. Everybody was going about launching grenade after grenade after grenade. The place was chaos.

I won the match by just picking them off with a SCAR as they all decided to stand still while launching.
  • headrush #38 2 years ago

I think Earl Bassett and the rest of you haters are sad losers. You say you are not interested in the game, but still you come around to get on peoples nerves with your fucking whining. Cunts.
