Mistwalker cans next Xbox 360 RPG News

Xbox 360 News by Ellie Gibson

5 January, 2009

AQ Interactive has announced that Xbox 360 title Cry On has been thrown in the bin.

This was to be the next RPG from Mistwalker, the studio behind Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey. Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi was producing the game, with Kimihiko Fujisaka designing the characters and Nobuo Uematsu signed up to provide the music.

Or not. In a statement issued to 1UP, AQI said it decided to cancel development "after analysing the current market environment and forecasts for the future".

The statement concluded, "We deeply apologise for troubling those who were awaiting its release."

I suspect this will happen to a lot of games this year.

Just play any Final Fantasy game and pretend it's called 'Cry On'. Problem solved.

Cry On was definitely not a FF clone, but whatever.

Did the two previous games not sell the way they expected them to?

I guess in a time when a poorley selling title can bury a studio we might be seeing more of this as they play it safe? Shame though did sound cool.

Apart from FF I'm hard pressed to think of a million selling JRPG. Especially in the West.

this could also translate to:

"We've seen FFXIII, and there's no way we stand a chance of compeating"

More likely they see how much these games cost compared to how much they sell and decided there are bigger profits in other genres. It's a damn shame because Lost Od is a very good JRPG, but I can't blame them for it. It's the equivalent of saying to a developer 'do you want to earn £10 an hour or £50?' It's a no brainer.

blue dragon unfortunately complete pants, the first JRPG i hav had to put down. Never got to play lost odessey but it didnt review all that well....then again most of the JRPG's are not reviewing too well, maybe they ought to ort out frame rates and general innovation n order to avoid stagnation.

Shame
