Midway concretes UT3 PS3 date News

PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

4 February, 2008

Midway has confirmed to Eurogamer that Unreal Tournament 3 on PlayStation 3 will be out here on 22nd February.

It will join the PC version that launched in November 2007, and do clever things like work with mods designed by the desktop community sitting jovially behind their command centres.

No level editor is included in the console offering, but those of you with PCs can build stuff and port it across, or just download other people's creations to a Memory Stick.

Tom was also full of praise when we got our hands on it at the end of last year, pointing it out as the new online FPS benchmark on PS3.

Already picked up the US version, couldn't wait.

@BrokenSymmetry
I don't think any firm dates for the 360 version have been suggested yet, although 6 months after the PS3 version seem likely. Although there may be an agreement with Sony in place, the 360 version is apparently also delayed because Epic are trying to reach agreement with MS over user-generated content and how that might work on the 360. So I have read anyway.

It's finished I believe but Epic are in discussions with Microsoft about how they can allow for the downloading of free user-made mods and maps, etc. The PS3 is an open system so it was easy but the Xbox 360 is very much a closed system so it'll be interesting to see how Microsoft works around it. I suspect that the content may well be free but controlled, i.e. you won't be able to just download any map from the internet and use that like you can on the PC and PS3.

There's already over 60 maps and numerous mods for the PS3 version over on UT3mod.com and, cleverly, they can be downloaded straight to a flash memory stick from within the PS3's browser provided you incorporate the correct folder structure on the memory stick. Most of the maps are mediocre but there's a few good ones and all are 100% free. Epic plan on adding an editor to the PS3 version at a later date so that PS3 owners can create their own maps too.

The hype has died on this by now, surely. Not being an ass, but I hope they do a bit of advertising, and build some momentum back for us Europe folk.

Like Penguinzoot said, I expect anyone who really really wanted it already imported it. One perk of the PS3.

Well the NTSC version lets us Brits play against you Yanks from here so I can't see that there will be a problem with the PAL version.

Why has it taken 2 months to release over here?
Its in english. PS3 games arent region locked.

Why the delay?

I think Epic were on holiday basking in their own glory,...... grrrr
