Microsoft clarifies Mod War 2 DLC deal

Will be exclusive to Xbox 360 for 30 days.

Microsoft has revealed just how much of a headstart Xbox 360 owners will have with the new downloadable content for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

"We have a 30-day timed exclusive on the Modern Warfare content packs," a spokesperson told Eurogamer. "So it will be available on other platforms, but you get to try and play on Xbox 360 first."

The exclusivity deal was first announced at E3 last year. Back then John Schappert said it covered the first two map packs for Mod War 2.

The DLC is due to be released this spring but an exact date has yet to be locked down.

    30 days? That's not long. Although I'm more interested in what the DLC will consist of.

    I just assumed it was going to be exclusive for at least a couple of months. I believe this exclusive deal is just wasted money for Microsoft as it was hardly marketed at all and if you were going to but the game for the PS3 then you probably don't have a 360 to play it on as it's obvious that was IW lead platform.
  • icematt12 #3 2 years ago

    ^I believe it's more Activision that has a lead platform.
  • Golgo #4 2 years ago

    Release date? I wonder if it might land same day as battle bad company 2, hmm...?
  • TopKatt #5 2 years ago

    I wonder how much this cost Microsoft? 30 days isn't really long enough to give them any additional sales benefits I would've thought.
  • muscleblade #6 2 years ago

    I dont believe its a waste of money at all. It sends a message to both 360 and PS3 owners that MS wants their platform to be first to get content for the best (selling) games.

    DLC can't come early enough.

    Yet, IW should use more time on patches, to make the multiplayer stable. Right now, it's soooo unstable I could cry.

    The newest patch 177 (from yesterday) is even making the IW.net worse, as many many people now experience crashes etc.

    IW should turn it around amd incorporate IW.net into the XP leveling system:

    If you successfully join a game, you earn 50 xp.
    If you can't join a game 5 times in a row, you earn a challenge and a new emblem that says WTF

  • braydee89 #8 2 years ago

    30 days is a joke! how can they really make a big deal out of that?
  • TruWari3r #9 2 years ago

    "a new emblem that says WTF "

    ooh want

    as for what the actual maps are according to a leak

    Pack 1:

    * Abandon
    * DCWH-The White House
    * Compact
    * Revolt
    * Complex
    * Storm

    Pack 2 (sounds familiar anyone ;)):

    Most pointless DLC payoff ever?
  • LiveForever #11 2 years ago

    It better not be 1200 points like gears, 600 maximum.
  • homerramone #12 2 years ago

    Wonder if all the hacks recently are exclusive to 360 :-)
  • DoctorZoidberg #13 2 years ago

    I don't care about map packs, just give me more Spec Ops. They MADE MW2!

    Really? I thought the first few were good (the duo ones in the helicopter and plane are awesome) but then it just turned into doing bits of the campaign again....
  • asphaltcowboy #14 2 years ago

    Since when did we start calling it Mod War 2 as opposed to just MW2?
  • ignatiusjreilly #15 2 years ago

    They are really stretching the definition of 'exclusive'...
  • nottingham01 #16 2 years ago

    just like the game then a load of shit
  • Bangaioh #17 2 years ago

    30 days? This is just silly...
  • mingster #18 2 years ago

    More spec ops missions please..
  • muscleblade #19 2 years ago

    " but then it just turned into doing bits of the campaign again.... "

    With a friend that is. Makes it pretty different from the single player campaign. Juggernauts isnt in the single player either.
    Taking those down with a frind by my side where the greatest moments in the game.
  • GamesConnoisseur #20 2 years ago

    Spec Ops is really the main course in MW2! The campaign SP game are noted to be much more like various Spec Ops missions hammered together into a single story! IW worked on various exciting bits and then created an excuse to link them all up.

    Would have preferred them to discard the pretensions and just focus on creating much bigger, stronger and varies Spec Ops. As I think that would have made the game even better by having variety of locales, mission types and transports used as per heli or plane bits.

    DLC.... exclusive may seem a bit pointless but when you look back over the duration of the hd gen console, MS seemed much more committed at getting multi platform DLC exlclusives and that do send a signal.
  • geeza2020 #21 2 years ago

    these maps cant come soon enough IMO
  • metalangel #22 2 years ago

    No more fucking Brazilian favela levels, please. They are my least favourite part of the game.
  • Murton #23 2 years ago

    Sounds like wasted money for Microsoft, but think about it, this was announced last year as being simply, "an exclusive" how many people who own more than one platform bought it for 360 thinking it was an outright exclusive and might have been something better than a multiplayer map pack?

    Muscleblade makes a good point too, it's money well spent in that it sends the message that MS will do whatever it takes to secure additional content to the best selling games, but equally the publishers in this case send the message that the payoff is worth more than the enjoyment of their game by their complete fanbase, it's a double edged sword really. Also in my opinion no amount of DLC exclusivity can bridge that gap in first party development between MS and the other platforms, in that regard I think it's fair to say that this and all other exclusive DLC on multiplatform titles is a major waste of money.
  • Jayke #24 2 years ago

    LOL who cares? how many people have this game on both consoles and waiting to see which one has DLC first????
  • huckan #25 2 years ago

    If L4D2 isn't enough to entice people to getting an xbox I can't imagine getting a couple of maps 30 days early will... !
  • TheGoose126 #26 2 years ago

    Never heard of this game?
  • Jay-ITFC #27 2 years ago

    Exclusive maps is to ensure those with both consoles get it on 360 rather than PS3. Therefore 30 days is plenty, just right in fact.
  • bratmandu #28 2 years ago

    Sorry Acti, but I won't be buying your 4 multiplayer maps for 800 mspoints (a guess at the content and pricing), your game is OK, but I doubt I'll play it much after March 5th.

    It just looks ridiculous when you airstike a tiny wood cabin and it doesn't even suffer damage decals! Update your tech Activision - evolution, not revolution!
  • WinterSnowblind #29 2 years ago

    As much as I like my 360, I really have to critisize MS for these exclusive deals they keep entering into. It's bad enough when it's only for a year or two.. But are any multiconsole owners with MW2 on the PS3 going to run out and get the 360 version instead because of this?

    They really should focus their money on aquiring either 100% exclusives, or better yet, funding their own development teams to make new exclusive I.P's, similar to Sony..
  • laudy #30 2 years ago

    @wintersnowblind

    See Jay-ITFC's comment. It clearly matters to some folk. If I could actually finish a multiplayer game without the damn thing crashing I'd be a happy man. People say it may be my internet connection, but the very same connection gave me no problems at all with MW1...
  • tachometer #31 2 years ago

    Re: the guy who leaked the names of the maps. Abandon was a map in the Activision game Soldier of Fortune Payback. if you do a search on youtube you can see some vids of it. I remember it as a poor map and not as good as "Village" from the same game.
  • uzivatel #32 2 years ago

    @WinterSnowblind: Was it confirmed Microsoft has to pay anything?
    I mean, Activision was not at good terms with Sony earlier last year, which made this timed exclusivity sound more like their message to Sony. The DLC is not some huge deal on its own, but how about delaying the next PS3 CoD only by few weeks? I doubt Sony would like that.
    Or maybe Activision wants to sell via LIVE because Microsoft offers better terms?
  • Fur_Cough #33 2 years ago

    Lol!
    It's just a PR stunt so M$ can talk about exclusivity, because they are so short on decent exclusives this year. If I hear another word about how "great" Halo: Reach is going to be, I'm going to start calling the franchise the most overrated in history....oh hang on, I already do.

    "...if you were going to but the game for the PS3 then you probably don't have a 360 to play it on as it's obvious that was IW lead platform..."

    I have both a 360 and the PS3 (and a Wii, although that's not relevant here). However, I bought MW2 Hardened Ed for the PS3. I don't give a shit what the lead platform was - all my friends have a PS3, the PS3 online is free and works well. Enough motivation for me.

    +1 for man.the.king for making his platform choice for the right reasons, if I could give more than +1 I would.

    Lead platform doesn't really matter unless the developer in question makes no attempt whatsoever to optimise the ported version, truth is that most modern games are nigh on identical, there's subtle differences obviously, but they're barely if at all noticeable to the gamer, in fact I very much doubt that most gamers would be able to tell the screenshots and videos on Digital Foundry apart if they didn't tell you which was which.
  • xgen007 #36 2 years ago

    MS: 30 days for pissing you off ps3 owners muhahahahahaha

    Seriously, whats the big deal?
  • alcides #37 2 years ago

    I don't really know what to think, first, it's revenue for IW, which is good, but I doubt their publisher would leave them without the financial backup for DLC development in the first place. So Microsoft is hardly the patron.

    Then, what message does this send to users of the PS3 and PC platforms? "Hello those-who-do-not-own-an-Xbox-yet, we just thought we'd piss you off for a whole month ... So you want to join the Xbox crowd."

    Which... isn't working on me. At all. Quite the contrary actually. I hope moderators will forgive me, when I modestly suggest that this whole operation make Microsoft and its Xbox look like total *****. Just pointing out the inanity of a 30 day exclusivity (delay) for a locked shares market...

    But then they know their job, and the bigger the numbers, the more irrational it gets. Sales numbers were the biggest on 360 after all.
