MGS4 joins the PS3 Platinum range

Now just 20 quid, but still 8 out of 10.

Konami will add Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots to the discounted Platinum PS3 range of games from 5th March.

Hideo Kojima's beefy action game will now carry an RRP of GBP 19.99 or EUR 29.95. MGS4 also comes bundled with Metal Gear Online, which leaves few reasons not to splash out on the game.

Metal Gear Solid 4 brought the Solid Snake story to a close last year, and picked up tip top scores across the board. Yes, 8 out of ten is a tip top score in our book - read our review for the full rundown.

So going for another 2000+ posts eh?

Still think it's one of the worst reviews I've ever read, and the score has nothing to do with it.
  • Rodchenko #3 3 years ago

Cue comment on overly long cut scenes.
  • Ninja_Tino #4 3 years ago

That game deserved nothing greater than an 8. For 20 smackers you'd be a fool to miss it though.

The Eurogamer 8/10 group is very prestigious and contains some of the best games in recent years.
  • Erinan #6 3 years ago

7/10 or less (PS3 owner here).

    Including one from today.

8/10 is fine and I loved playing through MGS4, its simply not for everyone

now please fishing for ad hits EG and get off the 'we're so hip because we give games 8/10' train, fair enough you score the games as you see them, but stop making 8/10 some kind of adorable catch phrase (like in the Cliffy B interview)
  • GamesConnoisseur #9 3 years ago

Giggling at EG purile attempts to get more flames/post counts!

Sure second that, as much as I loved MSG4 as being one of the more memorable game of 2008, but 10/10? Nope!!

  • JohnnyWashnGo #10 3 years ago

    8/10 is fine...

Anybody know if we can expect a subsistence-style rerelease soon?

Too late for that - I think it already is ;)
  • MasterNameless #13 3 years ago

People are so touchy on this subject, I can't blame them for poking a little fun. I'm sure I wouldn't be able to resist ;)

Surprised that it's in the platinum range already though. Thinking about it though, all fans of the series would have bought it up straight away without a second thought - or an 8/10 review from one site to put them off. Now it's £20, everyone who wasn't sure if it was their cup of tea may well consider a purchase now. Although, if they weren't sure it was their thing in the first place, they'll probably hate it as it's quite the acquired taste! In my opinion anyway...

  • Les #19 3 years ago

Will definitely get it eventually, especially at that price. But MGS games require serious dedication and I've been buying much more than I can play the last few years (that's the problem with cheap imports: At those low prices a deal often seems too good to pass up on and in the end you spend just as much but on more games while play time available doesn't increase).
  • Cataferal #20 3 years ago

Agreed. 8/10 was way too high. I'm a huge fan of the original MGS trilogy, but MGS4 just didn't fall in line with my expectations of the series.
  • Thunderbolt #21 3 years ago

As good value as the Platinum range is methinks most retailers would be selling this game around the £20 anyway or a bundle of a similar price.
  • Penguinzoot #22 3 years ago

    @the_dudefather

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there is an official EG 8/10 tee shirt, but I can't find the link at the moment. I might even have considered buying it, but can't face buying something rated less than 9/10 ;)
  • El-Dev #23 3 years ago

Still 8/10 still need about 5 discs to run it on a 360.
  • Rodchenko #24 3 years ago

David Jaffe thinks Kojima ruined the ending. He has a point.
  • RobotRocker #25 3 years ago

That's another reason I haven't got it yet. Though I never played any of the additions of part 2 and part 3 (except of course for the enhanced camera in the main game of the latter) I always want to get the 'full' version. Same with DVDs. Always get the 2-disc version and never watch the 2nd one. Apparently those stupid marketing ploys work with me...
  • Dizzy #29 3 years ago

  • FiZiE #30 3 years ago

LOL 8/10. MGS3 was a far far better game. MGS4 was the third best in the series.
  • Hobo #31 3 years ago

"Now just 20 quid, but still 8 out of 10."

That's a wonderful way to generate those ad hits right there!

Yeah but the story wasn't as good as H2 and 3.
  • Rirekon #33 3 years ago

Got to laugh at all the people commenting about EG just trying to get longer comment threads. Seriously people, are you even aware of what you're doing?!

Kojima is a moron. He wishes he was some kind of hollywood director with his shit story, crap dialogue, cutscenes and lacklustre gameplay.

He isn't even fit to lick the boots of Uwe Bolle.

He isn't even fit to lick the boots of Uwe Bolle.(sic)

Now, now,I think that's a bit of an overstatement. I'd probably be able to make movies as good as Uwe Boll does.

I guess if Kojima wanted to be in Hollywood, he would be welcomed with open arms. So far, he doesn't seem so inclined.
  • Ryze #37 3 years ago

    As good as Halo, then?

Long cutscenes with hide and seek shooty games in between, then?

    /runs
  • jamie_fear #38 3 years ago

    @ Les

I'm the same as you man, always wanting the "full" version so buy the 2 disc or tin case version. I need to stop it. It's becoming very expensive for something I never watch or use. Currently I'm eyeing up pre ordering the slightly more expensive DOW2 tin version. You win again marketing!

platinum, damn. i already own the game and even i'm tempted by £20 mgs4. new ps3 owners have no reason to avoid it.
  • Burkey123 #44 3 years ago

Wasn't my favourite game in the world. I'd probably give it a 7.
For £20, it has to be bought though.
  • Wyrm #45 3 years ago

    It's an iron-cast 10 for me.
  • a.j2020 #46 3 years ago

At this stage I think EG are simply taking the pish out of it. Not funny anymore EG!! Get a life!! you remind me of fanboys!!
Im not saying i disagree with the 8/10 score but i simply can't accept you acting like children and bringing it up at every chance. You have lost a lot of credibility over the whole MGS4 issue. At least from me.
  • Pac #47 3 years ago

Actually finished this game yesterday by coincidence.

Based on the first couple of levels I would not even give MGS4 7/10 but I think the gameplay surprises and production values probably push it up to a 9 for me.

I must be one of the few people that actually like cut scenes in games.

    But...
    in...
    MGS4...
    why...
    Are...
    they...
    so...
    slow.......
  • Abvance #48 3 years ago

Nice, still haven't bought it and some places will have it for £15, result!
  • Vin #49 3 years ago

    Sold for 20 notes.

Dug the demo, so that's a bargain in my book.
  • Tuffty #50 3 years ago

I like the little remarks from EG about MGS4's review. They must do it in order to get a giggle from fanboy reactions trying to defend MGS4 as if it needs it?

Mmm, whilst amusing, you're certainly asking for trouble with this one guys!
  • bad09 #52 3 years ago

Great game, shame about the multiplayer

Still £20 means absolutely no excuse PS3 owners, experience this fantastic (yes greatly flawed) game.

(It's only a tragic embarrassment to Sony and the fools in charge that I have to buy a new PS2 to enjoy MGS 2 and 3.....)
  • Santino #53 3 years ago

can i use the excuse of only liking mgs1 but really not liking 2 or 3 and the demo of 4 at all as as excuse for not buying this?

at least it is the price of a film now i guess, probably should have came out at that price inthe first place ;)
  • Les #54 3 years ago

"(It's only a tragic embarrassment to Sony and the fools in charge that I have to buy a new PS2 to enjoy MGS 2 and 3.....)"

And a small embarrassment to you for not willing to shell out the 600 euro for the initial version that could... ;)

For once I adopted early and hit (and paid) the jackpot.

Piss flaps to the 8/10 score for 20 squid!

8/10 is not a tip top score.
  • SchumiF1 #58 3 years ago

Still, 8/10 is a ridiculously low score for one of the best games ever. Eurogamer lost even the slightest credibility they had left.
  • #59 3 years ago

Didnt you know Eurogamer are the new EDGE?

  • m0thr4 #60 3 years ago

This was already discounted to £30 in Game about three weeks after launch. To be honest, I'm surprised it's taken this long to get onto the Platinum range.
  • Les #61 3 years ago

    "Les = git...."

Truth hurts... (in multiple ways) ;)

"Didnt you know Eurogamer are the new EDGE?"

Yeah and now and again they try to make up for it with 'randomly' handing out 10/10 scores...
  • el_pollo_diablo #62 3 years ago

    Dear Eurogamer.

You've lost all credibility. Why? Two reasons:

    1. You scored it too high.
    2. You scored it too low.

    When will you learn?
  • el_pollo_diablo #63 3 years ago

  • Pro_Gamer #64 3 years ago

Look, its about time you sony PS3 gamers realised that YOU asked for these types of games when you bought a PS3. Remember, the primary focus of the machine is to function as a blu-ray player. Games are a secondary capability. You can see this in the way they designed the architecture.

The most logical choice is to either build a gaming PC or buy a 360 rather than coming on here and whining because your consoles 'flagship' title is rubbish...
  • Rodchenko #65 3 years ago

Remember, the primary focus of the machine is to function as a blu-ray player. Games are a secondary capability.

    Someone is stuck in 2007.
  • Rodchenko #66 3 years ago

Eurogamer are up there with EDGE for the least credible review scores. Do you really care if they gave MGS4 8/10?, I mean they scored Splinter Cell Double Agent higher, they haven't got a effin clue about review scores.

They gave Halo Wars a 7. As good as Killzone then.
  • Stuz359 #67 3 years ago

I am going to give my hinest opinion of the game. The gameplay itself was actually pretty good. The problem was that it was just not as defined or as good as a SMG or GOW2. The story was completely nonsensical and the cutscenes were shite. Yet for some reason, I felt compelled to play it to the end. I think 8/10 is a very fair score, but very liukely 7/10 is a fair score as well. But that's the problem with scores, one mans 10/10 is another mans 3/10 and I have to say MGS 4 is like that. The title should really be Marmite gear solid...
  • IneptPercy #68 3 years ago

Great stuff, shame I still don't have the budget to accommodate the PS3 itself... one day
  • drumbaby #69 3 years ago

MGS4 was annoying, so I p-exed it, unfinished. Who wants to go through the whole install process every time they fancy revisiting a cool boss fight in an early chapter? Spastickated in the extreme I'm afraid.

Shame, because the 50% of it I played I quite enjoyed. Game = good....implementation on the console = fuckwitted.

The biggest problem was the review did nothing to explain the score. Milking the 8/10 for page hits reeks of desperation.

I dont know. Im playing through it at the moment and I love the game. I dont care what score it got.
  • jack979 #73 3 years ago

that review is terrible. how van they say the story is a "mess" its deep but that it. also it quite clear whos side everyones on (exept one person but that just good story telling). They hardly even mentioned the game play or Metal Gear Online. then they say it got a good score off them.
