Metro 2033 sequel will be 3D

Dubbed, imaginatively, Metro 2034.

THQ has revealed a sequel to Metro 2033. It's called Metro 2034 and will be offered in 3D.

Core games boss Danny Bilson shared the information with CVG.

THQ showed Metro 2033 running in NVIDIA 3D at E3 earlier this month. Bilson said the higher development costs of 3D are offset by the "unbelievably reasonable" cost of operations in Kiev, Ukraine.

Metro 2033 was developed for PC and Xbox 360. Bilson didn't mention what formats the sequel will be on.

Metro 2033, released in March this year, offered a spooky, subway-set shooter in post-apocalyptic Russia. Praise was high; Eurogamer's interview explains why.

Sooo, they optimized the engine right? Cause it takes a GTX480 or a HD 5970 to play Metro2033 reasonably in DX11. Reasonably, still not good enough for the 60fps you'd need for 3d
  • sneetch #3 2 years ago

Yeah, I agree Vlad27145, the key word there being "reasonably". You will not get good performance even with that. I was disappointed that the game performed dog awfully on my 5850 at 1650x1050, I couldn't see why it would (it was very pretty mind you) but I had to switch back to DX9 to get good performance.
  • Vlad27145 #4 2 years ago

I have a 5870 and that wasn't good enough for DX11 either at 1680X1050, 0XAA... I guess part of the fault has to be laid on ATI too, since their cards aren't that good for heavy use of tesselation,, but the performance hit on that game is waaaay above ridiculous. And at the moment the green team isn't really an alternative with the power draw, temperature and noise on their cards...

I would rather they work on improving the Ai, as i thought the game was fantastic and that was one of the few things to let it down. 3d ? Waste of time. Niche market.
  • ozzzy189 #6 2 years ago

Also, where the hell is the X360 dlc for metro ?
  • GamesConnoisseur #7 2 years ago

Would be ironic if Metro 2034 in 3D is again only available on PC and 360?

Enjoyed the game and should expect to see sequel on PS3 as well and ..... perhaps even on 3DS?!!!

Because that's what the second book is called?

I have an overclocked GTX295 and an overclocked i7 940, with 6GB of 1500MHz DDR3 RAM running off of a Solid State Drive, and Metro 2033 still chugged along at 10fps in most sections. On top of that it was buggy as hell and deleted all my save games when I got to the apparently penultimate level. The AI was laughable, the identikit faces and awful English voice-overs were annoying and the guns were often ridiculously underpowered. Haven't bothered with it since it wiped my saves. If it had worked, I can see how it would have been extremely atmospheric. As it stands, I only managed to enjoy the quieter levels, like Khan, for their incredible atmospheric value, because there's too much going on in every other level for me to do anything faster than at snail's pace.

I imagine I'll need a quantum supercomputer if I was stupid enough to invest in Metro 2034.
  • bad09 #11 2 years ago

Well happy about a sequel but god I wish they'd all hurry up and get over stupid 3D, sick of hearing about it TBH...
  • LR100 #12 2 years ago

I would hope they fix the terrible framerate/screen tear issues on the Xbox version (it was really, really bad for me) before messing about with 3D. If they must insist, I guess they'll have a 'normal' mode for people who don't want to or can't play it in 3D.

Guys, just turn the game to High settings and it runs fine on rigs like you are posting. You will get 60fps average and it's hardly any different visually to Very High. It also kicks the console versions far into touch.

The Metro engine is great but some of the lighting and volumetric smoke will kill even the most powerful GPU.
  • Darren #16 2 years ago

Metro 2033 was pretty rubbish though, basically a linear tunnel shooter with enemies of questionable A.I., weak combat and was way too short. I was actually shocked that the game ended when it did because it was so unexpected; it felt like I was half-way through! And the ending was totally lame. The final insult was the requirements to run this game looking half-decent and with a playable framerate (typical of many games from Eastern Europe). A very forgettable game IMO so I hope the sequel is much improved.
  • Pinky_Floyd #17 2 years ago

Metro oozed atmosphere and those smoke effects were just lovely. I thoroughly enjoyed it despite some flaws. Easily one of the better games releases this year and the length was just about right for me.

Hrm, I thought I tried that but I'll give it a shot again, if nothing else a fair few AMD driver versions have passed under the bridge since I last tried DX11 (and I'm still playing it a chapter at a time every now and then, just got through War and that was an exercise in frustration with a combination of the weak guns/ammo and the body armour the combatants wear. Military grade ammo is brilliant though).

    Edit: removed possible spoiler.

Given how accurate you need to be with the armour and face mask wearing enemies I could see the game being quite frustrating with a joypad.
  • bad09 #20 2 years ago

    @ Pinky_Floyd

Works well with the pad actually, besides creeping around the spooky tunnels you really need that analogue movement.

After the song and dance EG made of this in their pre-release previews I was relatively surprised to find it was just another subway shooter. The graphics too, were made out to be something special; but I thought they were merely decent - Singularity for example blows it out of the water, both visually and gameplay wise.

Still a good game; just completely disposable.
  • Darren #22 2 years ago

I played the PC version with an Xbox 360 controller which worked perfectly fine and had no problems playing it that way.
  • Darren #23 2 years ago

CaptainQuint - If we're talking about the PC versions here than Singularity's visuals are extremely poor compared with Metro 2033's. At least Metro 2033 has some textures!!!
  • Pinky_Floyd #24 2 years ago

The PC graphics even on High are really special. The volumetric smoke and depth to the image is a real joy. Haven't seen the console versions so can't comment on that.
  • CaptainQuint #25 2 years ago

    @Darren

Sorry I should've been more specific: I was referring to art design; not from a technical perspective. Lovely lighting and particle effects aside, Metro was the worst kind of generic, from a purely artistic pov, of course.
  • Katsumoto #26 2 years ago

Don't really understand some of the criticism. My PC is from 2007 and ran this brilliantly on high. Also, the game really must be played with Russian voice acting, available at the flick of a switch in options. It drenches the game in atmosphere.

    Absolutely loved it.
  • Xardan #27 2 years ago

I dont want 3D thanks but i do want more Metro.
  • thomaspower0 #28 2 years ago

To play it good on dx11 (except for the last lvl, just turn it down to high) on an HD5850: I played it at 1680x1050, very high and all the AA stuff lowest as possible (4xmsaa and filtering AAA if I'm correct) dx11, dx11 settings: only tesselation on, the other thing off(thats the real framerate killer).
The last level I did high quality because all those sunshafts(very high) are just too much graphics for my HD5850.

Great game IMO, bought the book too.

And 3D is just bullcrap, why would I buy 2 GTX480's to play the damn game in 3D? I mean, you need 2 GTX480's to play it in 3D since you need to render 2 times the game. Cmón.

holy c is it that long since 2033 came out? its still sitting on my shelf for me to start playing (shame on me i know)
  • TheTingler #30 2 years ago

It's true that Metro 2033 definitely isn't a game for everyone - some people absolutely love it, like myself, and others can't see past the problems. I do hope they solve those problems for the next game though, this was so close to a great original title.

However, don't cry about losing the DLC ozzzy189 - it was s**t and should've really been given away for free.
  • ozzzy189 #31 2 years ago

It's been totally dropped has it tingler ? Didn't realise. I too put the game into russian once i knew you could. loved the game, despite the AI flaws. I must admit, edge were bang on when they said it was at it's best underground. superb. i did find the surface levels to be a bit poor in comparison, and they also didn't look quite right. Can you get the alternate ending on 'easy'- 360 version ? I know you have to gain moral points and all that, but i thought i had way more than enough, but never had the option.
  • muscleblade #32 2 years ago

    @Darren

You are aware of the two different endings depending on the different choises you make through the story?

The normal ending isnt anything special, but the true ending is awsome. And linear this game aint as there are many different choises throughout the story. I want the DLC for this great game now.
