9? Cool.

Not the PSP's first 9. Lumines got 9 too, as did Virtua Tennis and maybe Ridge Racers.

And when Final Fantasy Tactics arrive, if it does this year, the PSP will have its first 10.

Good to see more anti-shovelware driven PSP games. If only they were the majority it could've been a market leader.

So, how are the chances for someone who disliked the "proper" MGS games for their "I want to be a political thriller movie" concept to still like Portable Ops?

I could use a good PSP game, it's been a while for me.

it's metal gear! luckily David Hayter voices Snake in this one so it doesn't sound as bad as it reads in Acid and Acid2. actually the story is pretty engrossing (and for those of you that constantly moan about them) the cutscenes far and few between.

i agree with killest, and anyway i don't really think this would work well as a home console game.

it has been set up specifically as a handheld experience, from the access point scanning mingame, through the menu system to the mission structure. playing this on a home system would be akin to trying to play wario ware smooth moves with an xbox controller, it would just lose far too much in translation.

I spot 11 games on Eurogamer with a 9/10. Did I miss one?

MGS: Portable Ops
Mercury Meltdown
Tekken 5: DR
Loco Roco
Daxter
GTA: Liberty City Stories
Burnout: Legends
Virtua Tennis
Ridge Racers
Lumines
Wipeout: Pure

It should be out here in April, with some extras over the U.S. version (more characters, 2 extra maps for online)

I don't have anything against the PSP, it's just that I don't have need for a portable gaming system and would love to see what Big Boss got up to in the 70's, thus a port of the game to a console I own is the easiest way for me to play, plus it could sell more.

Holy moley where!?!

You know when your being told for so long that the PSP hasn't got any games, you subconsciously start believing it, hence why i havn't picked up a game since Killzone, wow i've been out of the loop via PSP for so long. :(

***edit***

For those hoping praying for a PS2 port it seems unlikely.

Konami have officially apologized for undershipping because they thought it wouldn't sell much, it was sold out in Japan.

'So, how are the chances for someone who disliked the "proper" MGS games for their "I want to be a political thriller movie" concept to still like Portable Ops?'

If anything wants to be a political thriller it's Splinter Cell. You can't really level that accusation at MGS merely because of some pretentious dialogue and philosophy etc. At the core of the MGS games is fun, and a homage to action movies like Rambo and comic books. That is why you see over the top action sequences, vampires, ninjas, supervillains/wacky bosses and giant robots to distinguish it from being too serious.

I also forgot to:

Wasn't trying to flame the series, it's fine, it's just not for me. The team tactics sound interesting to me, so I'm wondering if I would enjoy this one despite it being "a true MGS" like the review says.

I played the US-Version: Great Stuff.

Yes, the camera controls are a little bit clunky, but they get comfortable after a while. Cutscenes and codec-sequences are reduced to a reasonable amount and you can jump into sidemissions anytime without any chatter at all.
Loading times: 5-10 seconds per mission.

You know when your being told for so long that the PSP hasn't got any games, you subconsciously start believing it

That's the problem with the PSP in the media. It has plenty great games, but every PSP review with a decent score states "finally a good game for the PSP", assuming its the only good one.

I believe that all the changes Kojima is making to the MGS formula are here in order to win over people like yourself, which may not be great for a "true" fan of the series such as myself, but I understand that he has to sell as many copies of this as he can.

So the answer to your question is: yes, you'll like it. (shorter and fewer cut scenes and lots of action and an epic adventure).

Also, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who bought a PSP MAINLY for this game (VCS put aside).
