Looking at that last picture, with the soldier sitting on the APC, I think I can believe that this really, really is in game engine footage, just look at the front of the APC, you can see that quite a lot of details there (all those 'nub' things) are rather blocky textures, same with the close shot of old snake next to a broken wall, those do look like in-game textures to me.

Have you seen the full video. It may be cut scene but they do claim in the vid that this is definitely not pre-rendered. One of the "FPS" on the screen turns into "Forget Prerendered Stuff"

I can't believe how cheesy the main character looks. He looks like some 80's action film star who's grown old ungracefully and point blank refuses to get rid of his mullet.

Its almost like a Leslie Nielson spoof.

Perhaps Snake is after the Metal Gear so he can use it's legs as his must be really creaky by now.
Maybe it's an effort to get the elderly into gaming?

Well, Solid Snake IS a direct reference to John Carpenter and Kurt Russel's 'Snake Plisskin' of the two 'Escape from...' (NY and LA) films.

I look at the pictures of this game, and then I look at the pictures of Xbox 360 games, and really... you'd have to be an utter retard not to spot the wild difference in quality between the two consoles.

360, your days are numbered before you're even released dickhead :-)

Dont you think that Sony are going to be releasing ultra cool screenshots and vids (like MGS4 & KillZone2) to make people think its better than the xbox? Lets face it, PS3 and the 360 wont have much graphic wise different, I think the thing which will make it will be the game releases and the internet multiplayer features.

The difference between screenshots/videos and the real "controller in hand disc in console" is massive. Screenshots and Videos simply build up a hype. With the right marketing any game could "LOOK" great and you will think its awsome!

I'm definitely not on the fence when it comes to hardware choice but honestly, what sort of madness possessed Sony_Blair to write that final sentence? I'm not even sure it's in English.

If you've got a PS3 and like MGS then yippie-kay-aye to you. I have and I do. Hoorah!

For goodness sake though, why turn a happy thing into another slanging match? I'm sure the 360 folks are happy enough with all the superior versions of just about everything that's come out on both platforms in the past 12 months.

Apparently the game is pretty jaw dropping in real life, but all the screens look pretty bland to me. Low-res textures, bland use of colour etc - almost like an upscaled PS2 game. The videos on PSN look much better though, one of those games ya gotta see in motion I guess.

Indeed, the gameplay demo was all sorts of "oooooh" for me.
Its nice to be playing as someone a bit crumbly and falling apart. Makes a change from the generic mercenary meathead thats getting wheeled out in most games.

About cutscenes, you would expect them to look a little bit nicer than in game graphics, mainly due to the fact that there is no AI and physics to take into account.

I own all of the other MGS games, but something about this one just doesn't click with me. I don't know what it is, but it just doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. It looks so completely different from the others, and while they didn't exactly have realisitic stories or cut scenes, this one seems to be almost comical, nothing about the story can be taken seriously, at all.

I'll probably buy it just to find out how this is all going to end, but it's really the name alone that's selling it for me.

I can't help but feel a lot of PS3 fanboys who've never even played an MGS game are pinning too much faith on this as well, it seems to be more of a case of "yes! we have a tripple A game!" rather than most of them genuinly wanting to play it. You do realise that the game will be 95% cut-scenes, right? I'm sure I'll love it, once I actually play it, but I'm expecting a lot of negative feedback from those who think this is something it's not.

It definitely looks better in motion, as for the textures, they only really look bad when you're right up close to them, which won't be a problem when playing, it's just soething that sticks out in screenshots. Really can't wait for this game, all the previews and videos I've seen make it look amazing, I'm far more excted about it than GTA IV.

That's the beauty of MGS. :) I agree lots of people will not like it (or maybe just the gameplay but not the story). This definitely isn't a system seller in the way that Prologue has proven to be. This is one for the hardcore. Don't think I will pick it up in June though, haven't even started on part 3 yet (not been able to get my hands on the subsistence version yet) and plenty of other stuff to keep me busy.

this is probably the ONLY game coming out for the PS3 i'm interested in, that isn't multi platform.

Is it worth buying a PS3 for one game though? Thats what i can't decide.

Snake looks utterly ridiculous. Seriously, I don't think I could play a character who looks so spectacularly stupid.

He looks like one of the Village People if they were to reform now.

most of the folks I know that still haven't joined this 'gen' are waiting for this an GTA4. I think it's about as system sellery as a game gets!

A lot of fans both over in the west and Japan seem to be taking issue with the look of MGS4, especially the whole end of snake thing. Even Kojima himself has now said that what they were aiming for (the ten steps forwards) was not achieved and only a single step forward was managed.

I think this will still sell bucket loads to the fans but, even previews seem to now be trying to limit peoples expectations of the game. Destined to be a PS3 classic but, with that niggling what went wrong feeling attached to it. Kind of sums up the metal gear frachise in a nut shell really.

Talk about taking a quote completely out of context...

What a load of bull. It's rather the opposite (like with any big name video game, so it doesn't tell you too much).

I absolutely LOVE MGS's cutscene heavy action personally, I had no issue with MGS2. Also nice to see the menu work in this one appears to be at a minimum, the camoflage mechanic in MGS3 really pissed me off. Felt like after every step I was having to faff about in the menus.

Having said that, I'd give it a replay, I never did the Subsistence version of the game.

I've seen a 30 minute 720p walkthrough video of this game a while back and the game looked great then and still looks great now. Although I'm not a big Metal Gear Solid fan - I thought the second game was rubbish to be honest - I did enjoy MGS 3 and this game looks even better, although the colour palette does look very Resistance FoM in places, i.e. very subdued and almost monochromatic. I like the fact that the camera has been altered to allow for a more Splinter Cell-ish viewpoint (as seen in MGS3: Subsistence) as I found the ones in the two PS2 games very restrictive and, on occasion, downright annoying. I've already pre-ordered the game as I'm fairly confident it'll be a must-have game and exclusives like this are the reason I bought my PS3 in the first place.

It's possible people just don't like the art direction. Lots of people think Bioshock and Oblivion looked stunning but I wouldn't exactly put them on my best looking games list... Beauty, eye, beholder, etc.

In the third new picture for today, that looks like Metal Gear Rex. Will it be back? Maybe just to kick the shit out of the annoying new prancing Metal Gear things that are in this game.

This looks brilliant and somewhat archaic at the same time, but I'll almost certainly still be buying. So long as its better than MGS2.

Just like when I recently looked at Alan Wake's ingame screenies again, and found myself far less impressed with them than I was 9+ months ago, the same is happening with this game.
For one, just to rile up the sad fanboys slightly, there isn't a single shot in that gallery that shows graphics beyond what the 360 can do, not one, and if you think otherwise you're thinking utter shite :)
It just looks bland as fuck colour wise, I'm not denying the graphics are lovely, but it does look really, reeeally dull.
But looks aren't everything huh?
Halo 3 was pretty fooking average looking, but I still had a darned good time on it.

GFX look like they could do with a couple more passes or some HDR lighting to provide more contrast - hard put put my finger on it exactly but seems washed out to me and certainly would benefit from a little something.

CoD4 has shown what these kind of environments can look like on the PS3, so there are no excuses.
