ah, this game was making me consider getting a ps3 soon but not so sure now, was really hoping they would sort out the ridiculous cutscene to gameplay ratio but that doesn't seem to be the case

Wait a se... so, the game is SUPER-AWESOME because, starting roughly halfway through its length, there are a series of moments where Kojima tinkers with the game design and plays around with the user's expectations, but the reviewer /doesn't want to tell us exactly what he means by that/ because it would /spoil the freakin' experience/?

Examples, please! Because right now I have no idea WTF the review is talking about, and it baffles me. I thought reviews were supposed to, y'know, discuss the game's content. If the play-style shifts markedly halfway through the game, surely that's worth discussing in depth?

You may think Halo didn't deserve 10/10 (and if I'm honest, even as a fan of the game I would agree with you), but to dimiss it out of hand as "shit" is just plain idiotic. I expect you couldn't quantify it if you tried.

@roquito: when will you understand that 8 is a very good score by EG's standards? Read the scoring policy, FFS.

EDIT: funny thing is, the comments section of the 9.9 IGN review is full of whiners complaining that the game didn't get a 10!

Just tp point out that Psychonauts, one of my fave games of all time, got an 8/10 on this site http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?art... The game ended up being voted game of the year (for 2006 I believe).

People get a little hung up about the score at the end of the page, it's personal opinion at the end of the day. This whole thread just reminds me of when they awarded Gear of War 8/10. To be honest I thought they were being generous then.

All baiting aside, reading the review really makes me want to pick this game up.

..maybe saying it was "shit" was a little harsh, so I stand corrected on that one. My problem with Halo3 and it's scoring was that the leap from 2 to 3 was very very minimal when I was expecting so much more. I say it was shit because for me it is probably one of the biggest let downs.

If that were so, every review would say the same thing.

If that were so, all a reviewers job would be was to state facts about the game - something that you could do without even playing it.

If that were so, people wouldn't have favourite review sites, because there would be no sense that one site closely matches your own opinions and another site differs from your opinions.

A review is a combination of facts about a game, combined with personal opinions about a game, presented in such a way as to describe and evaluate the game for someone who hasn't played it and wants to know more before buying it. This person then reads the review and, based on the words in it, can be helped to decide whether it sounds like the kind of game they like and, significantly, whether any flaws the reviewer found in the game will be ones that will particularly bother them.

Of course, the fanboys complaining (about what is, after all, a great score!) will buy the game no matter what, so they're forgetting one important point: THIS REVIEW IS NOT FOR THEM.

Strange review, reviewed by someone who seems like they don't like MGS series. The closing comment of We love you Snake, don't come back seems to go against the score of 8/10, because if it is good why wouldn't you want another game.

Oh well, Ill see what it is like in 12 days time.

This review is incomplete in my opinion. No words on the gameplay mechanics, how
the controls work, and how the little metal gear nuances feel also a la octocamo
and mk 2.
So many issues unresolved and i thought it would get a 10/10. I'm sure it
will be better than GTA 4 and that got a 10/10..Hmm..

Anyways does anyone in the UK know when the stores will start putting out
MGS 4 console bundles? I've been saving up my pennies a while now and i pray i get
my hands on the game in another 13 days now.

For PETEB: Meristation is THE FIRST SITE OF GAMING IN SPANISH. It's very important. At least has 99% more visits than EGamer, and it's more important taht you and me, of course.

Seems like every other MGS, it has it own way of doing things and it's going to keep doing them. No bad thing. MGS will never get a 10 anywhere, it's to fractured in what it is trying to achieve. Anyone who thought different (I guess I would expect a nine at best) was kidding themselves.

I agree.. I was a bit puzzled by that one. GRID looks like a nice game (have ordered my copy) but judged by the demo, it's not 9.

That is just soooo true, thanks for calling it like it is. This guy is the most overrated voice actor in the industry. His style nearly spoiled every single MGS game for me, too bad that V4 still has the same "issue".

Isn't MGO an entirely seperate game? I was under the impression it's not even on the disc, but downloadable. Or maybe they're just not allowed to say anything about it yet.

The irony. MGS has a plot? I can write a program that would generate the "plot" in MGS.

There's a pretty good chance that you are, in fact, being unreasonable. How do you know that they COULD review the online component? It's a couple weeks yet before this game comes out -- what if the servers aren't up yet? Somebody else mentioned that earlier in the thread; you seem to have glossed over the possibility.

So, uh, any thoughts on that?

The people in this thread complaining about this score vastly outweigh the people crowing about it.

If reviewed by MGS lovers it'd get 9.5/10, if reviewed by Eurogamer dude who has the same problems with MGS in general as a large slice of gamers do (I think MGS is an ego trip for one guy) it gets 8/10 which is still a superb score. What's the problem?

However, the review makes it plain that its still got the same fundamental design content and mechanics that I've always disliked.

The only time I've really disagreed with a Eurogamer review was after playing Halo 3... christ, now that MUST have been reviewed by a Halo lover... dull, dull meh. But I digress.

I loved the PS1 game, removing the joypad from port 1 to port 2 so that boss (Psycho Mantis?) could not read your mind was genius.
Did not get on with MGS2 as much for some reason, seemed a bit too backtrack for me, one of my pet hates about MGS1 - crawling in that box through that cave of wolves was just too boring, did not really play Snake Eater as it seemed a bit more fiddly control wise.

It was a well written review that makes it sound excellent but still may retain some old annoyances, will be buying though for definite.

8 is a great score! And if you read the review, I'm sure you'll find out why it got what it got. It even managed to make me (who hated MGS2 and 3) slightly interested in playing this game.

I don't see why people moan so much about the scores. Reviews are exactly what InsoFox put so well and if it doesn't tally with your own opinion so bloody what. I like to read an opinion on a game but I don't base my purchase on it. Many games score different to my own view. AC was a 6 on EG and that was one of my favourite games last year. SMG got 10 and I thought it was utter rubbish that should grovel in shame before Mario64!

Sure sometimes I agree (GTA4 and H3 were 10/10 games to me) but it's not the end of the world if the reviewer feels differently about a game.

(gotta admit it is suss there was no mention of the MGO starter pack at all, come EG why no mention at least!)
