Just to emphasise the point: 95 features for EG.

The very last line throws away any credibility that the reviewer had. If he were smart and critical he wouldn't have put that and I might have taken the review more seriously.

So GRID's better. Wow.

Sounds really good, and I don't even own a PS3. Quite entertaining, but definately not a killer app. Sounds like fan service for sure. And what fan does not appreciate that?

For God's sake, this is a website providing information on all platforms, I'm sure each review is based on the game at hand. People need to stop with this console war bollocks. Just get both 360 and PS3 if you can. Pointless, pointless chatter about which is better. The review seems about right - MGS is a marmite game. I think any 8 is worth a buy, especially with PS3's modest software line-up. Finally, I can use my PS3. I can't wait for Lego Indy!!!! Two great games within a week of each other. Anyone else hardly played GTA IV due to its repetitiveness? It was definitely over-hyped. It's great, but just another GTA.

Japanese games are in disarray. PS3 just happens to suffer a bit more with this because their key titles are made in Japan.

People are acting a bit over the top because this is the biggest release on the PS3 this year. It's meant to be a game not worth missing not just a good game. Now it looks like it's not an essential game you must own.

I'll still buy it though.

I have a PS3 and I have MGS 4 pre-ordered. Whether the review score was 7 or 10, it wouldn't have had any impact on my decision to buy it, it tells me everything I needed to know and the number at the end is just the reviewer's subjective score. I might think it's a 6, I might think it's a 9, I dunno yet 'cos I haven't played it but one thing I do know is that I'm looking forward to finding out because it sounds like a good game! 8)

Funny how some people read that review as sounding like a 7, yet I read it thinking "9" - maybe that's just because I'm a big fan of the series and even some of the criticisms aren't going to put me off. All in all, I actually thought it was a fair and good review - it made me want to play the game and see how Snake's story ends and the hints at changes to the traditional MGS gameplay got me a little more excited. 8 is a fine score and I'm pretty confident that for me, as a fan of the series, that means a 9.

This will be the game that eventually gets me to buy a PS3, I've no doubt about that. Just as soon as that 80GB model launches over here...

So, what other games within the genre is better? That's what I want to know. There's no way that 8/10 is the highest score a game in this genre deserves, but what's the other game called?

Add +2 to EG PS3 scores and it all starts to make sense ;)

Hmmm, I got MGS 3 few months back and I can't say I was too impressed. Based on the review, I'd say maybe catch it at a friends house first, but then the IGN review is pushing me to pre order.

Gonna look up some more on the online bit - think that will make me decide more easily.

The Halo 3 review was by a different reviewer.

Some of you are totally, round-the-twist loopy.

The problem is : the review is strange: I think the have only a few visitors on the site, and if they give MGS the worst note they can, more and more people enter Eurogamer to see the review.
Also another problem is that the review is bad written and not well explained. Something dark is behind this 8.

Well, I've preordered this quite some time ago and it's mine day 1. However, I respect different opinions and kudos to EG for having the balls to clearly state their opinion :D , no matter how much I may come to disagree with it.

The review read mostly like at least a 9, though.

I'm surprised about the low(ish) score though, especially after GTA4's 10. Many people in the gaming press are now stating they may have overscored it... perhaps the same will happen with all the MGS4 10's and high 90's. Or perhaps you'll realize you underscored it haha. :)

@jonsaan - Well I agree with a 6 for Haze but I don't think what you say is true of every review... I mean Halo 3 is a 12 scoring game?!? No, IMO that's an 8 at most. ;) LOL

Nah, a review is just ONE person's opinion on the game and not everyone will agree. So long as the review is objective enough to gauge whether you'll like it or not then the number at the end is meaningless. Read the text and make up your OWN mind whether the game is worth buying THEN you decide how good it is. One 8/10 review is NOT the end of the world people, it may well be the lowest score the game actually receives, not that should make the slightest bit of difference.

Reading the review, without the MGS title attached to it, this game would have gotten a 6 or 7 max. The future of video gaming is not 90 min cutscenes.

8 is not the problem: the problem is when you have the feeling that a review has something dark and bizzare, something that makes you feel you're reading an opinion that isn't based only in the cuality of a game..
Trial of time will put Eurgamer's review in the history of wrong opinions, I'm sure of it.

You sound a bit sad getting worked up about this review. I don't own a PS3, have only played Metal Gear Acid on the PSP but I actually read the review (instead of focusing like some others in this thread on the score) and the review actually makes me think that I might enjoy giving the game a try. I am forewarned that it might indeed be a love and hate relationship. I am forewarned that I'll be sometimes amazed and sometimes bored and annoyed or confused. But it still sounds like a game to experience.

And the last sentence says nothing more that it's maybe time to renew the formula. The reviewer is hardly sentencing MGS to imprisonment in an oubliette, never to be seen again.

That's what I got from the text of the review as someone who only pays little mind to MGS normally and doesn't even have a PS3. It made me curious.

Well this is the 3rd review i have read, OPM and IGN scored it 10 and 9.9

I will say another time: The review is crearly not impartial at all.

Since MGS3 got a 8 on EG too, I fail to see the problem. And if you think that an 90 minute cutscene is a good thing in a videogame, well you may understand that some of us disagree.

You miss the obvious my friend. You are supposed to add 2 to the PS3 scores and subtract 2 from the x360 ones, in which case Halo 3 comes down to 8 8-D
