Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Comments by Oli Welsh

Sounds good. My only reservation is the setting. The previous 3 games had quite unique settings at the time of their release, but this one's war torn setting has been used a lot recently.

I'd admire the brave 8/10 score if it wasn't so contrasted to all the other review scores as of late. All the other AAA releases have had majorly inflated scores this gen.

The rug-pulling thing really intrigues me. I have no intention to ever play this game, so does anyone know where I can find a nice, big spoiler of it?

Yeah, the bloke does a good summary. His breakdown of MGS2 was really good, I quite liked the twist of characters halfway through. Then again I liked taking over as the Arbiter from Master Chief, thought the perspective shifts were interesting.

sounds like a reasonable score to me, and pretty much what I expected from a reviewer looking through the hype and fact that its MGS4 and looking objectively at it as a game.

Like the review said, for the fans, it'll be wonderful. For everyone else, it'll have its problems. I fall into the latter group. I have bought and played and enjoyed every MGS game so far, but they have their flaws.

...are just as bad as those people slating the review score before they've played the game themselves. Get a fuckin' grip.

8/10 seems fair. After a quick look Mario Kart Wii and Mass Effect on 360 also got 8/10 and I really enjoyed/enjoy these titles.

With Eurogamer I will never look too much at the review score to be honest - not since they gave Halo 3 10/10. That was never a 10/10 - it was, and still is shit, but I digress...

I'm getting this and I'm sure I will love it!

Yeah, weird score for the tone of the review. The review had me psyched with all the superlatives and then the end was like what the...? Maybe that's like the game though. Odd that people are already dismissing the game based on the review though. I just read another one which was gushing over it (IGN, 9.9), so I think wait and see how it averages out. That goes for all the PS3 fans too who may feel it was under scored.

@FluffyTucker - If 8 is a crap score on EG then does that mean you think Gears of War, Bully: S.E., etc. are rubbish games?

No, they're not... a game that scores under 5/10 is below average, 5/10 is average and anything above that is decent or better. Thus an 8 is a good game with flaws, that's all. ;)

I'm amazed that anyone pays attention to IGN scores. The only credible part of the site is the Nintendo section where they don't seem afraid of pissing off fanboys.The PS3/360 sections always tend to fall over themselves to overscore the hyped games.

Reading it again, it is fairly poorly written for Eurogamer. Even if I disagree, I usually at least enjoy reading the well explained faults and fully described gameplay elements. They could've given this a 10 and it still have ben poorly written. I even checked Olis' other reviews, and they're all reasonably well written, so it's not a case of me just disliking a persons writing style.

For those people complaining about why EG haven't reviewed the online mode; didn't it occur to you that they might NOT be able to test it under the servers are up and running near release time? I'm sure EG reviewed Gears of War and Halo 3's online modes separately too although my memory may be a bit rusty.

I was worried that every single reviewer was being paid off or could not be trusted. Halo 3 did not deserve a 10 or gta 4. they were very good games but not ground breaking.

MGS4, praised as it is in this very well written review, is the only game out there making me want to buy a PS3 at the moment.

The guy who wrote this report comes off as a totally biased person towards the game from the start to the end. Stating one awesome thing about the game. Only to follow up with 3 bad things in HIS own opinion. He's credibility to me and everyone else should be just crap. Since it's clear MG is not a game he likes very much if at all. It's also very clear he stands alone among all the other credible gaming source's world wide. Clever way to gain attention I'd say. So when the game sets records sells and boost the PS 3 over XBOX. He'll find something else to cry about. What a waste of a read......

I linked to the IGN review as it has some more Gameplay information. Not because of the score. Forget the scores!
If you go by IGN's review, the game is 50/50, cutscene vs gameplay. So where is the gameplay information in EG's review? Admitedly there could be more on IGN UK too but at least there is SOME.

This review reminds me of the NG2 review: both games get good-but-not-great scores because they're "for the fans only".

MGS can, by definition, never score more than an 8. The plot is a train wreck and game play has been stuck in the 90s.

I love the fanboys crying... the "but Halo 3 never deserved a 10" defense is the best. So great.

An 8 is still good guys... plenty of great games I played that were 8s on EG.

Am I the only one who think 8/10 sound fair and unsurprising for a MGS game?... 8/10 is a good score, right?

I didn't expect a revolutionary game and something that would change MGS, but a another epic episode in the series and MGS4 sounds like it is just that and will satisfy MGS fans (me) and PS3 owners (me again). Xbots will always yell and scream "ps3lol" even if MGS4 (or another PS3 exclusive title) got a 9/10 or 10/10.

But I would have liked more technical details in the review - especially about length, install times, number of chapters, etc.

Ok reading the comments on this review have annoyed me so much that i had to register on this site to say so, lol.

Are some of you people serious?
Since when was 8/10 a bad score, especially for a "marmite" game. And especially considering the review came from someone who straight away said he loves and hates metal gear solid games.

For people then to base their whole decision on buying a PS3 around this review gettin a 9 or a 10 is so naive.
Does this mean that if those very people read the OPM or IGN review first or even next they would decide its time to get a PS3.

Reviews, with all professionalism taken into account, are very independant views on their personal enjoyment of a game.
I wouldnt base my decision on a game on one review. The fact that this game has been gettin 9.9/10 and 10/10 elsewhere would suggest alot of people will disagree with this score, and yet by the nature of gaming, some will think the score is justified or even too high.

My guess is people who have jumped into this thread dismissing the purchase of the PS3 on the grounds of this review were never going to purchase the console anyway, and are just looking to fan the flames of childish fanboyism, or justify their own decision not to buy the console.

The fact is people should make their own mind up.

Even an 8/10 suggests this game is worth playing, a 10/10 from other reviewers suggest its definately a game not worth missing!!

Some people need to grow up and use their BRAINS to decide for themselves!!

+1 To Mass Effect which was one of the best and best selling games on the 360 got an 8/10.

There are plenty of games with very high scores which I feel no urge to play. This review did a good job of breaking down how MSG4 differed from the others in the series and roughly what to expect from the game.
