Metal Gear Online Hands On

PlayStation 3 Hands On by Dan Whitehead

29 April, 2008

Page 1 of 3. Page 2 ->

Rewind to a week ago, and my first impression of the long-awaited Metal Gear Online beta test probably wouldn't have been suitable for public consumption, dominated as it was by thoughts such as "f**king slow updates", "s**t c**k dropped connections" and "which s****k w****ler designed this g**k m***ing sign-up process?"

Suffice to say that although entering the beta may have proved even harder than sneaking into a FOXHOUND-controlled facility dressed as a clown, we won't be dwelling on the arduous task of finally getting to play the bloody thing. What we will be dwelling on is the reality of what Kojima and his crew have rustled up for the online arena, and whether all the delays and palaver have been worth the hassle.

The beta started with four gameplay modes and two maps, with another one of each added today. The original maps are fairly compact, but this is entirely appropriate since the game keeps things cosy, catering for up to twelve players at a time.

Bloodbath is the smallest, a claustrophobic tangle of shattered concrete bunkers with a central tower and a network of underground tunnels. Gronznyj Grad is more spread out with both indoor and outdoor areas, lots of sniping spots and elevated rooftops and walkways. They're not bad maps, but nor are they particularly inspiring. Gronznyj is the better of the two, offering more varied gameplay options and the hilarious man-catapult, but I was never blown away by the design of either. Fans of beige and grey will be happy with the aesthetics, but the detail level isn't particularly high. Anyone who's been hoping that the game will boast hitherto unimagined heights of hi-def realism will probably be disappointed with these largely functional and non-interactive environments.

A friendly salute will allow you to share intel with your squad mates.

Gameplay follows the third-person shooter rulebook to the letter, while the controls will be familiar to everyone who ever played the previous MGS titles. The X button handles your stance - press while standing still and you crouch, hold it down and you go prone, tap it while running and you'll roll. Triangle handles specific actions - pressing against walls for cover, climbing ladders, and rolling onto your back while prone. L2 calls up the scrolling inventory menu, while a quick tap cycles through the items one by one. R2 does the same for your weapons, which consist of SMG, rifle or shotgun plus a handgun, knife and grenade or mine. L1 puts you into aiming mode, where the square button switches the often-useless auto-aim on and off and triangle puts you into first-person view. R1, predictably enough, makes you shoot.

As a control system for a single-player stealth game, it's a proven formula. As a control system for a multiplayer game, it's less successful. The inability to shoot from the hip takes a lot of getting used to, as R1 simply activates a melee attack without the L1 aiming modifier. Your first instinct upon seeing an enemy running ahead of you is to simply point your camera at them and open fire. By inserting the additional button press before this can happen, the game loses a lot of immediacy for no apparent benefit. Such mechanisms work fine when you're stalking AI guards as Solid Snake, but for the looser, more chaotic environment of a multiplayer game you need a system that reacts on the fly and having to aim, then aim again, then fire never really feels natural.

Setting traps, such as this arse-zapping drone, is one of the skillsets that can be upgraded over time.

The weapons and items menus feel similarly clumsy. You don't always have time to stop and scroll to the weapon you want, and while you can switch the slots around to put weapons in your desired order it's often no more intuitive to flip through them in sequence. Simply mapping each weapon-type to a direction on the d-pad would suit the needs of multiplayer much better, but the d-pad is instead used for selecting the rather pointless pre-recorded voice commands. Presumably Konami noticed that headset play is still a rare luxury for PS3 players (most matches I played had maybe four out twelve players using voice comms) but I'm still unsold on the tactical value of being able to make your avatar yell "Let's go!" to anyone within earshot.

It's like Mr. Whitehead purposefully chose to ignore the fact that this is Metal Gear Solid and instead complain that it's not CoD 4.

Oh well.

i think the problem with this is it still feels like an old game. i played a quick training match on sunday, and it just didn't feel that great to control. i'm sure if i gave it time, i would like it, especially with the new sneaking mission.

it just seems to me that kojima and team aren't pushing to create a new experience, and just simply polishing up the exterior while keeping the general nuts and bolts the same.

Nice to know about the sneaking mode. Sounds brilliant.
I still can't download version 1.1 though. Grrr.
I guess I'll have to wait and buy the whole package.

For those who didn't bother to read the entire article, Mr Whitehead left the most positive comments to last.
Nothing wrong with that.

I had high hopes but Konami failed to deliver, both in terms of not anticipating the server load going worldwide public beta and for the gameplay not suited for a shooter online.

*disappointed*

I go for MGS4 instead and ignore MGO

oh oh, don't forget you can map hotkeys to keyboard, so that should prove nice for those with one... being able to rapidly autoswap weapons that way must be a bonus.

Personally, after doing the tutorials and now having a grip of the game... I think its excellent. Really needs a bunch of people to set up with some good squad and cover tactics.

Also rather not anticipating server load at beta stage rather than when the game gets released.

Awesome game. Sneaking with a purpose, more intelligent gameplay than most multiplayer shooters.

This was never going to be MGS-COD4 hybrid and it shows. Feels a bit generic, but its really about the cultural divide of japanese trying to create an online experience with little understanding of the online market (remember the ps2 mgs online was dissconnected after a few months).
Saying all this though, id rather have the option to play mgs4 online, which means it need support - Im making sure i play it online as I think Konami will cancel it as quick it as its last one if no-one shows a blind bit of intrest

Sneaking mode was in MGS3 online as well as being an addition to this. I however prefer the capture missions.

As for having to aim before you shoot, if this is causing you problems you are obviously doing it wrong, or at least thinking about it wrong.

Sounds kinda ropey. The new mode sounds interesting and I agree with Mr Whitehead. They should definitely be focusing on the MGS strengths and not try and mix it with the online shooters ala' COD4 etc. I don't have a PS3 at present but am waiting for MGS. Reading peaks like this excite me and also make me a bit weary...will still be a hoot with some friends im sure!

This is the most fun I've had in an online console shooter since... Er, I can't remember.

Cardboard boxes = w1n
Porn mags = w1n
Man Cannons = w1n
Solid eye & octo camo as Snake = w1n
Radar/SOP system = w1n
Tranquilizer guns and stealing peoples weapons whilst they're unconsious = w1n

I agree with the review, the controls are somewhat a bit clumsy. And it's quite weird to see players trying to grab each other for 5 - 6 seconds without success...

Hadn't they added the Snake mode, I would have got pretty bored with the game but it's been a blast yesterday evening with a few fellow Eurogamer readers :)

I love the game more and more with every play, but it's not Metal Gear. Awesome, but not MG. The controls in particular are fine - holding a button to aim is fine, I always do that in CoD4 anyway. The melee stuff is awful at first, I'll admit, but once you get it down to a fine art choking someone out then aiming at their unconcious head whilst they try in vain to wake up is funny.

gotta agree with the "double aiming" thing it takes a while or you try to hit someone while they are shooting you, but this is only at the start after a while you get over it.
Pretty good all in all, i think they released the normal maps just to stress test the servers nothing more, but i have to say i have an normal ordinary telly and via the RGB hook up it's difficult to read the writing on screen or make out much detail ( i'm sure with HDMI it's better) all my PS3 games suffer from this, my Wii and Xbox 360 are crystal sharp on the same tv.

Also on the side the mic comment is a fair one, no one ever talks!! xbox live everyone has a mic already so no problem but with this i can see a mic being essential for team work yet another 35 euros more which is a bit much.

Am I the only one feeling a little underwhelmed by this title. It seems to take little more than luck when you shoot people, I've emptied a full clip into a combatants torso only for him to trot towards me and kill me instantaneously. Battles seem to be tedious affairs; randomly killing (if it works), being killed and then s-l-o-w-l-y plodding back to the action. I'm a big MG fan but after the hectic action of COD4 the game seems to be caught between the two genres and doesn't know which to be.

Still looking forward to the main event in MGS4 though!

I really like this game. Loads of tactical options, a good, but difficult to learn control scheme, excellent character customisation, and a great skills system. I agree with some of your points though, shooting from the hip would be more than welcome, and a smaller crosshair too.

Finally found time to have a crack at the sneaking missions, I seem to be quite good at spotting and killing Snake.

I think the server strain has dropped severely since GTA came out, a lot fewer people were playing, although maintenance downtime was approaching again and it does tend to get quieter in the last hour.

Before GTA, I was seeing the 3 main servers all above 700. Yesterday Snake was at 800, and both the others at 60-ish. The plus side is the connection has been faster.

This game definately isn't for me. I had high hopes for it when i first came across it, but having finally had a bash at the beta, the whole thing just feels clunky and generally devoid of any fun.

I might give it the benefit of the doubt and try the sneaking missions, but I'm not holding out much hope.

It really grows on you, wasn't keen at first but now I'm really feeling it, and loving the new map, snake mode is better than ever too - ended up having a binge session last night, there are plenty of cute touches such as placing an exclamation mark with your gunsight so allies known where you spotted something.

Tutorial doesn't explain anything, so get stuck in and figure out yourself.
