Metal Gear Online add-on this week News

PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

14 July, 2008

Konami plans to expand Metal Gear Online this Thursday by adding its first Online Gene Expansion pack.

This costs EUR 9.99 (approximately GBP 8) and adds a trio of maps, a Survival mode, the Reward shop, more heroes plus the ability to create female characters.

The maps are Coppertown Conflict, which has wide open streets to stalk around; Tomb of Tubes with its labyrinth of underground passages; and Virtuous Vista, a big outdoor area for long-range assaults.

Survival mode has you battling through increasingly tricky stages to earn points you can spend on new gear in the Reward shop. Meryl and Johnny from the single-player campaign are the added heroes.

"The new update represents terrific value for money, and will be followed by additional add-ons in the coming months designed to keep Metal Gear Online fans enthralled with the new possibilities they will bring," said Christopher Heck from Konami.

Metal Gear Online is the multiplayer accompaniment to Metal Gear Solid 4. Pop over to our Metal Gear Online review to find out more.

Give me DLC that I can pay for with points and you may get my money Mr. Sony.

I'm just not happy keeping a CC/DB card on their service. I'd even consider PayPal.

£8 to play as a woman?

I'm still angry at the fact that they expect me to pay £3 for another FUCKING character slot -_- So They expect me to pay £11?! Okay... screw you Konami.

At least it give women a chance to play as women ;) *waits patiently for MGO players to gasp "OMG, A woman"*

If you want my £8, I want levels that tick the nostalgia box. Levels from MGS1-3, mainly. I know it might not fit the plot in some cases (big shell counldn't really work), but that's what I want.

What stopped me setting this up was the fact that you were required to sign on using a different name to your PSN id. Joined up thinking?

Agreed with ALL here £8 is too much. I would like to see them do an Insomniac and do a few freebies to go with the big updates.

A Shadow Moses map FTW, also Outer Haven, Arsenal Gear, Tanker and a jungle map.

Groznyj Grad is from MGS 3.

@ Chrono-Kun: OMG, a woman!

Still, Konami have really ballsed up what could have been a good game here. I see what they're trying to do, offering a free (ish) base pack then giving players chance to expand if they want with DLC, but the pricing is all kinds of wrong.

£8, Operation Dark Mirror and the other Warhawk map was only about £3 and you got 5 new areas, a Factory, Snow map, plus a APC and Dropship.

The 2 Expansion pack bundle was only £5.

@Chrono-Kun the expansion includes a 2nd character slot so no it's not 11.
£8 does seem a bit pricey but it looks like good content.

Why would you want another character? Especialy when you have to upgrade your skills.

Then again, different skills for each character.

Oh... Still. It's a bit pricey.. but meh. It's probably worth it anyway... I'm just pissed off at the fact that no matter which user name you have, it's only 1 MGO character per console -_-

Meh... it'll make my little sister happy though. She'll probably be making a character. (Btw... any of you groom her and put a bullet to your heads >=3)

This is tempting, but £8 is a lot and it's some real effort to sign into the Konami shop.
Plus, how many people will I be able to play against?

Maybe they will end up doing a bundle like Warhawk?
