What is this? SNK said Nintendo does not offer enough information to use the classic controller and instead has to use the GC pad and now Mercury drops the GC pad because? Now surely Metal Slug needed the classic controller way more than Mercury does. I thought Nintendo wanted the early games not to use the classic controller.

This could be great. Never played the PSP games but always like the look of them and they reviewed well.

I don't really understand why people would want anything different? Surely if you have a tilt control you'd use it for mercury?

And even if you don't want the tilt control, the classic controller is a nice piece of kit. Aside from "because I already have it" there is no compelling argument to want the GC pad for Mercury instead, IMHO.

I'd heard that the Classic controller was horrid though.

It's not horrid, just smaller than I expected, (the pics made it look alot bigger) if you got big hands then you may prefer the GC pad as your thumbs may touch 'cos of the analogue sticks, but other than that, it's nice to look at, sleek, comfy, light, it's got more buttons than the GC had and has a symmetrical design to it, so those who opposed the awkward layout of the GC pad should appreciate this.

The only thing that really sucks about it is that it has to be connected to a Wii-remote otherwise it won't work. It drains your battery and it can be awkward having two controllers connected, I don't get why it couldn't just connect to the Wii console instead.

The analogue sticks protrude about a foot from the controller, and it's about three inches across. And as such it's a horrible experience.

The classic controller is (IMHO) shit.

Much better to use the cube pad for retro stuff. Hopefully smash bros will let me do just that.

Hopefully the graphics are good. I mean the style.

the classic controller is alright. i'd like to try it out for gamecube games but it doesn't work :-(

I thought you could play GC games with it? I like the classic controller so far, although I of course haven't used it all that much. What bothers me most is that you cannot really grasp the controller because there are no designated handles like every other controller since the PS had. But it is in fact no problem at all, it is just a tiny bit harder to correctly adjust your fingers blindly.

Who really cares about stick controls when you have tilt controls?... all they have to do is to look at Super Monkey Ball, maybe improve it and it will be perfect for Mercury :)

Best thing about monkey ball on the wii.. was it's the first game i've ever played 1 handed.

Which means i can drink beer while playing a game.

As far as I'm aware the Classic Controller doesn't work for Cube games. I haven't got it to work... the whole Wiimote and anything connected to it just doesn't function once the Wii boot's into Cube mode.

Shame really... as you can't even use the Home button on the Wiimote to get back to the main Wii menu once a Cube game boots. Instead you have to get up... walk over to the machine and power it off and on again (reset just re-sets the Cube mode).

Talking about cube games. I'm a bit fucked off they didnt include the option to save them to the hdisk!

It wouldnt be TOO hard to trick the hardware into THINKING it was saving to the memory card surely?

I was stupid when i got my wii and gave my cube/memory cards/and games i didnt want to my kid brother - thinking the wii would still be able to play them.. Didnt realise about smegging memory cards!

Smelly: Too bad. I remember when I bought my cube on release day. It was my first disc based console and I only had cash with me, no plastic, so it was just enough for the cube and Luigi's Mansion. Thought to myself I'll just save on the game until I get to the next cash dispenser. When I got home it dawned on me that that might not be the best decision I made. Of course I was unable to save. I guess I was too used to the cartridges. Luckily I still found one on the same day in the 3rd store I tried because until then nearly everything was sold out.

They would have to emulate the emulate the speed and format of the old memory cards, which isn't desirable because there would be risk of unexpected results in some games. There's a lot that can go wrong. By sticking to only exact GameCube peripherals/devices, it means Nintendo can be sure that any GameCube game will work flawlessly. If it had been the case that having 100% gamecube hardware in the Wii was impossible, then Nintendo would have surely dropped gamecube back compat rather than implement a solution that requires every single game to go through QA again (extremely cost prohibitive, it's actually quite amazing that Microsoft are going to this trouble on the 360)
It was same with PS1 backwards compatibility on PS2: you have to use PS1 memory cards since they are a different format/speed to PS2 cards.
