Mercs 2 dev admits "huge debt" to GTA News

Pandemic Studios has acknowledged that openworld action game Mercenaries 2 owes "a huge debt to GTA", but doesn't believe that players have to buy one and not the other.

"GTA is such a phenomenon; so huge that I don't think anyone is really a competitor to GTA in a manner of speaking," creative director Cameron Brown told Eurogamer in an interview published today.

"I guess we're a competitor in the sense that we're in the openworld genre, but I would actually call it more of a colleague. That's what we aspire to be. And not just in terms of sales - everyone working in the business would love to sell those kind of numbers - but more because we owe a huge debt to GTA."

"I don't get the sense that someone who's going to buy GTA IV is not going to buy Mercs 2; I don't think it's an either/or decision for anyone," he added, admitting that he is "really, really fascinated to play [GTA IV] and see what they've got up their sleeves." We have a feeling he's not alone.

To be clear "if you buy GTA4 there is no reason you shouldn't buy merc2"

That was my plan anyway :)

Mercenaries is the second best game for causing explosive carnage after World in Conflict. The carpet bombs in WiC were awesome.

In fairness, GTA wasn't born in a vacuum - it too owes a debt to many games such as Elite, Mercenary etc.

I think it's because they keep changing the headline to try and make it fit on one line. Though it still doesn't here, and why they can't test it before releasing it live I don't know.

This is either "Please buy our game!" or "EA told me to suck up to GTA/R*/T2 for when the inevitable buyout happens".

I enjoyed the first Mercs, but it needed a lot lot more variety. I will be interested in the second, but it will probably be a rental first for me.

Pandemic Studios need to get a professional marketing boss in to stem this tide of likeable and honest comment..

PW is my hero. I was gutted when I saw he hadn't been interviewed when Edge did the "making of" piece about Mercenary.
Mercenary, Damocles, Dion Crisis... all really groundbreaking games way ahead of their time. What's Paul doing these days, anyone know?
