Max Payne 3 out this winter
PC and console, "new direction".
Take-Two has announced that Max Payne 3 is in development at Rockstar Vancouver and will be released for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC this winter.
The game was originally mooted all the way back in 2004, but things have been quiet since. Original developer Remedy is not involved by the sound of it.
While specific details about MP3 are thin on the ground, we're told that gritty, trenchcoat-loving grumpy-guts Max is now retired but still "embroiled in a world of corruption, turmoil and intense violence".
In fact, Max has left New York behind, and having been double-crossed, is now trapped "in a city full of violence and bloodshed, using his weapons and instincts in a desperate search for the truth and a way out".
We're also promised "more of the classic elements and hyper-intense action that fans have come to love", although the game will be "moving the story of Max in a new direction".
"We're starting a new chapter of Max's life with this game," said Sam Houser, Rockstar Games founder.
"This is Max as we've never seen him before, a few years older, more world-weary and cynical than ever. We experience the downward spiral of his life after the events of Max Payne 2 and witness his last chance for salvation."
Poor old Max. He only wanted to be loved. And kill people in slow motion. Check out our creaky old reviews of Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne if you've forgotten what the Bullet Time gunplayer was up to back then. (Apologies for the hilarious broken formatting.)

Max travels to Rapture to avenge the death of his aunt/uncle/nephew/father etc after he finds out another junkie, hooked this time on Adam, killed one of them. Expect fighting Big Daddies in 'bullet time'.

Max Payne 2 was about 5 hours long, so you'd hope it can't get much shorter than that.
The quote in the article makes it sound like gameplay will be much the same, but it's the story that will have a new direction. But who knows? I'm just happy to get to play some new Max Payne - the first two are right up there with my favourite games.

New direction = leaping diagonally through the air firing two shotguns in slow motion
God, I hope so.
Sadly though, it's a platformer, where you build your own vehicles and race them. Obviously.

Even cheaper (if you've no religious objections to Steam, that is) although I still have the original discs somewhere:

Those screens of MP2 still look good at a glance after all this time.

I played it recently and it could honestly still pass for a contemporary game, with the added bonus of being able to push res and aa up to the max. It did look amazing when it came out though, and MP2 included quite fancy Havok physics which is basically the most recent big feature to be added to game graphics/design and something that definitely dates older titles.
I don't want to be the dick that complains about games being made for consoles then ported badly for the PC, but it does ever-so-slightly worry me that they might do it that way round this time.

At least all versions might work if they did it that way round. The console ports of MP1 and 2 fundamentally borked the stick controls, ruining the experience completely (for me anyway).

I know, i know. But since "this fall" usually means Q4 i would say "this winter" must be Q1 right. We are still in Q1 so.

I know that was supposed to be a joke, but, sounds brilliant!

Speaking of the original crew, where the fuck is Alan Wake?

Under their former name they made Homeworld: Cataclysm, they had a hand in developing Counter-Strike with Valve, made Global Operations and a Treasure Planet game (linked to the animated movie).
Perhaps we'll see the first Max Payne RTS game? :-o
