Matt Hazard spin-off due this winter

Blood Bath and Beyond for PSN/XBLA.

Vicious Cycle and D3Publisher have announced that Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond will be released for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade this winter.

Blood Bath and Beyond is a spin-off from last year's pretty ropey Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard, in which lead character Matt has to take on foes from his fictional old games. Satire, innit.

This new digital download is a side-scroller in which Matt has to... go back through his old games chasing down one of his old nemeses, General Neutronov. His battle threatens to take him through a made-up catalogue of delights like The Adventures of Matt in Hazard Land and Chest of the Pirate Queen.

There are some screenshots in a Flash viewer on the official site, which also suggests we'll see the game the other side of the New Year.

So, the 6th March 2009 has suddenly become so last year now, right?

    Okay then...

Dunno, I liked Eat Lead but got stuck at a stupid boss fight (the blindsiding instakill tentacles) and haven't tried to progress since. They didn't make much use of their claim that Matt is from the 8-bit era and he isn't designed properly for that anyway (8 bit characters were never bald and never this monotone, hair is one of the few details a sprite can have and most 8 bit systems don't support a color palette that contains so many browns and grays), would've been much funnier had he been able to flatten enemies with a jump like Super Mario.

While most people thought Shadow Complex when they saw this announcement I thought Duke Nukem Manhattan Project, also a 2.5D sidescroller and Matt Hazard always struck me as a Duke Nukem wannabe (I figure Eat Lead was somebody getting tired of waiting for Duke Nukem Forever)..

I liked Eat Lead for what it was.
