Mass Effect 2 DLC is out now and free
Shepards are delighted. (Slight spoilers.)
Free downloadable content has already been released for Mass Effect 2, days ahead of Friday's launch. Don't read any further if you're allergic to even tiny spoilers.
The nine pieces of DLC can be queued for download from the Xbox 360 website (well spotted, IGN). We're not sure whether these are supposed to be free or if there has been a mix-up.
Links to each of the additions are below. Note that other territories will need to change the "en-GB" part of the URL to suit their region.

The rest worked fine, though.

It let me queue the first one for download, but the rest it says aren't available for download from the web. Rather odd that they would be up there in the first place tbh.

That's the only one that is proper content, it adds a new quest and party member. Unfortunately, it's also completely free for anyone who buys the game, so downloading it now was a bit unnecessary.
The armour isn't really anything amazing, but they are all exclusive to certain retailers or promotions, some of which we aren't even getting in this country and it's very unlikely any of the stuff will be obtainable in any other way.

I think in the opening scenes the Normandy from ME1 gets fk'ed up, and they rebuild it, but with more stuff in it. Just a guess though, based on trailers.

If you've got them qued it should count as you already owning them, and let you re-download them anytime you want.

But then I guess MS have realised their cock-up. I was also only able to add the first item in the list to my queue.

Ok, but is that for definate? Can anyone confirm? I hope I don't get home later and find that they won't download!
This is like Christmas for those who were quick! Now I'm super hyped for this game! Shame I have to wait till Friday - assuming Amazon deliver on the 29th and not after the weekend, that would suck.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
If not I'm annoyed. For some reason the Collectors armour is still downloadable but all the others have been taken down. If you've ordered the standard edition, snap it up and pray it'll work!

Shame i only got the first one but better than nothing. Seems someone dropped the ball somewhere and most likely lost their job.

Christ, I hope not (and I doubt it). Its not sich a big deal that anybody should be in big trouble for it.

btw I really hate these "miss and gone forever" pre-order bonus. At least do what Infamous did: release it for free after half a year or more(or even for a fee for completionists who came too late)

Pre-order exclusives are a huuuge deal to retailers.

I have no problem with out-of-gameplay exclusives like artwork or plastic freebies, but in game bonus always make me feel like cheated.

Losing your job is a huge deal too. I know its a fair comment to fire from the hip during forum chat, but if someone actually lost their job for a mistake (assuming it wasn't one in a long line of cock ups) I wouldn't be impressed with the employer. Sacking is for misconduct or persistent failure, not singular mistakes.
Anyway, the amount of time this mistake was allowed to run free for will have made little to no difference to anyone's pre-order numbers. So again I say overall, its not that big a deal.

I couldn't find a 360 one anywhere, and I was looking about a week or so ago. I could find a Collector's Edition version of the walkthrough helpguide book thing (whatever they call it), but not the game. PC versions all over the place, but no 360 version.

Looking at it, it says MASSEFF, not even "2", so I reckon it's probably OK - just a generic "code", so to speak.

@KujiGhost
"MS made a mistake. They should at least just put their hands in the air, admit it, and let everything be available to all."
Really? Would you apply the same logic if you made the mistake of leaving your keys in your front door, before noticing an hour later?
Comment below viewing threshold Show
The thought certainly occurs that this is just the DATA for the DLC and to actually USE it you need to type the codes in game via the Cerberus network to unlock them. You'll note that the extra character Zaeed is NOT included in this DLC list. Probably because he's integrated into the game whereas they are all additional. You'll still need the code to unlock him, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if normally the data will be prompted to download for these items of DLC when you type the code in to Cerberus network.
The additional Sarge character in ODST unlocked when you typed in a code, although the data was accessible without a code, you couldn't make it work.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
That is a slight over-exaggeration of the issue... I’m not asking them to make every item on the Marketplace for free.
Besides, my comment was just wishful thinking on my behalf.

I should have the game downloaded in around an hour and a half, and the date next to the progress bar in the EA downloader does indeed say January 25, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be playing ME2 already tonight.
Update: Just finished downloading and installing (it was instantly unlocked for installation in the EA downloader, unlike Dragon Age where I had to wait until Midnight on the official release date), but here in Denmark the game unfortunately doesn't pass the activation check after hitting play from the game launcher.
I'm hoping the activation servers are all set to accept the 26th as the activation date, at least then it should be possible to play tonight or tomorrow (depending on server time zones, at least one of the guys saying the game was working is in Australia where it's well past Midnight) rather than having to wait till Friday here in Europe.

All or at least most of those DLC packs are free - although some are bonus items for pre-orders/special editions.
At least with the PC version I guess it's probably another (no doubt unsuccessful) attempt at lowering piracy by giving people a tangible incentive to buy and register the game.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
There is a formula out there for good DLC and I think for the consumer its closer to substansive add-on packs released ala the original Neverwinter not the crappy 2nd one.
And I agree if the content is available on release or close to it... IT SHOULD BE ON THE DISK!!!!!!
So far I think it was only released in this fashion to get our feet wet but Dragon Age does seem unfinished graphically and atmospherically. Though I am impressed with certain parts of the game like the voice acting and the fighting system (on the PC). But they made the game to cover the span of Ferelden and thus it doesn't feel as well made as battling through the five warrens of Neverwinter.
Its very thin and generic in areas like the Dwarven slums or the fast travel settings and locations. And I would have prefered an open world like Oblivion, Morrowind to journey through with my party.

Hmmm, after having read the initial comments here from people who were saying that they had managed to download all of the content for free before the "mistake" had been rectified, I assumed this meant that most of the DLC was premium content. If it's a case of my being able to download this stuff for free when I get the game delivered (hopefully) on Saturday, then it won't be too bad. Still, it seems like a mightily complicated way of doing things. I just hope that they haven't been stingy with regards to the content on the disk itself, what with all of this Day One DLC nonsense.

Developer A and Developer B both release identical games on the same day. Both games cost £40 and both games provide 30 hours of top notch triple A entertainment.
One month after the release of the main game, both developers release identical DLC packs. Both cost £5 and both provide 3 more hours of top notch triple A entertainment.
When the DLC budget got cleared by their publisher, Developer A chose to spend it developing their DLC after the main game had been finalled. Developer B chose to spend it developing their DLC during the development of the main game.
They have both offered exactly the same experience at exactly the same price.
Result? Developer A is lauded for their wonderful continued support of their software. Developer B is reviled for being a bunch of evil thieving bastards.
This doesn't make sense.
Question: When Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King was released, why did I not hear a single cinema goer say "Call me old fashioned, but sequels should be filmed AFTER the original movie..." or "If the footage was available when the first film came out..." etc. etc.?
@ Lamb & Mr.DNA: I really should learn to leave this well alone, but bad logic upsets me almost as much as video games scheduling seems to upset you. ;D
Edited for having awarded Mr.DNA a doctrate...

My gripe was that I was under the mistaken impression that most of the DLC mentioned in the article had to be paid for. Now that I know better, I haven't got as much of a problem with it. But thanks for the lesson all the same.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Kotaku has some videos of some russian dude using ALL of the download content within the game itself so I'm not sure why you think it doesn't work on the full game. It clearly does work. He even has a small tour of the old Normandy ship crash site.
Looks like, if you were lucky enough to get the content, then you've got all of the exclusive stuff. I also suspect that the exclusive stuff will be available on the cerberus network over the coming months as this is what was initially implied, along with some strange tank download that I couldn't quite understand (there don't appear to be any vehicle sections in the new game).
Comment below viewing threshold Show
The downloads not working because of the cerberus download system was only a theory, and one which was proved untrue by those who have early copies of the game. If you have the content on your HDD, it'll work in the game.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
If a game feels unfinished DLC only adds insult to injury and the blame rests squarely on the developer. I am not saying that I'm upset at the developer (Bioware) , just slightly disappointed but just enough to not have interest in the DLC. (for Dragon Age)
What should be the cut off point for releasing DLC from the original release day? Well that would depend on the complexity of the game and if it looks polished or not.
Okay I did say this and it would be unfair of me not to address it since it is your major grievance:
And I agree if the content is available on release or close to it... IT SHOULD BE ON THE DISK!!!!!!
I admit that is more emotional than logical. Its based on the notion that resources could have been allocated to improve textures or add plot worthy experience or a decent sidequest but were instead diverted to DLC.
I am not privy to the board meetings of developer A or B as in the hypothetical scenario, nor would I care to be unless Eurogamer reported it in an entertaining way. (shameless plug
Remember the consumer buys the game to be entertained and not to open a bank account with the developer. Hopefully Mass Effect 2 accomplishes this better than Dragon Age, I'm optimistic and not entirely hostile to DLC done right.
As for Return Of the King I'm not sure why you mention it but three and a half hours is too long to be cooped up in a cinema and no I don't want to watch all those movies back to back to back!

It turns out now that he could not see the DLC listed in his DLC menus, but it does after all work in the game.
SO, all's well, ladies and people, for those of us who managed to download these in time.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Not angry with you mate but, you just know that some muppet somewhere is going to delete the content they managed to download, thinking that it's useless now. Just trying to save them some grief!

"Its based on the notion that resources could have been allocated to improve textures or add plot worthy experience or a decent sidequest but were instead diverted to DLC."
It's this notion that I find so odd, and i wonder where people think these resources come from. If you're given a budget for building DLC and you spend it on the main game (improving textures and putting in a decent sidequest), I would imagine some fairly serious questions would be asked as to exactly where the fuck your DLC is.
I mentioned LOTR because it is a series of films that were very famously filmed simultaneously, as opposed to the 'traditional' method of filming one film first and then the sequels after, then all three were released for full price as seperate films, and nobody has a problem with this. If a games developer does exactly the same thing for exactly the same reasons, they get pilloried for it. Why do you judge films based on how good the film is, but games on how they were made?
Also, no matter how much he may have wanted to, if Peter Jackson had 'diverted resources' into a massive Tom Bombadil sequence in Fellowship and then not had enough to make the third film, he would probably have got in a bit of bother.
It's a bit of a wobbly analogy, admittedly. Games and films are different. Things are cut for different reasons. But it still illustrates how the process seems to be completely irrelevent to one audience, and yet the cause of great upset to the other.
A much more straightforward one would be to ask why there isn't more of an outcry when the Special Edition DVD is released with 30 minutes of deleted scenes, or a documentary shot on the set. Do you think they weren't available when the original DVD came out? Isn't that even worse? I mean that stuff really is just shit they had left over at the end of the movie. It cost them practically nothing!
Nobody cares though. They just decide whether they think the extra content is worth the extra price. What is it that fills games players in particular with so much righteous indignation?

On a side note, does anyone know for certain if GAME (and Gamestation etc) will be giving away Inferno armour with preorders? Would be interested to know if this is exclusive to Amazon in the UK or not. Have preordered collectors edition from Game AND standard one from play.com (and that one'll go straight to CEX minus the Terminus code) but have heard conflicting stories that all preorders that aren't from GameStop/Play/other Terminus exclusive retailers have Inferno...
