Mass Effect 2 DLC is out now and free

Shepards are delighted. (Slight spoilers.)

Free downloadable content has already been released for Mass Effect 2, days ahead of Friday's launch. Don't read any further if you're allergic to even tiny spoilers.

The nine pieces of DLC can be queued for download from the Xbox 360 website (well spotted, IGN). We're not sure whether these are supposed to be free or if there has been a mix-up.

Links to each of the additions are below. Note that other territories will need to change the "en-GB" part of the URL to suit their region.

this was listed on ign.com a few hours ago! jus downloaded all of these and my oh my how those limited edition pre-orders will plummet after this :D surely MS is aware this is listed for free by now right?
  • joe90 #2 2 years ago

    they are removing them now
  • CrunchinJelly #3 2 years ago

Couldn't get either of these 2 to work:

    # Terminus Weapon and Armour
    # Inferno Armour

    The rest worked fine, though.
  • AlvySinger #4 2 years ago

Same as above, early bird catches the worm - or, in this case, a Recon Hood.
  • Gartt #5 2 years ago

haha, managed to get most of them before they were removed. "Not available for download on the web" is the message now.
  • Restart #6 2 years ago

Aren't these supposed to be the various pre-order bonuses?

It let me queue the first one for download, but the rest it says aren't available for download from the web. Rather odd that they would be up there in the first place tbh.
  • Vortex808 #7 2 years ago

I got the first one, but none of the other links work now.
  • LHH #8 2 years ago

I got the first one, but none of the other links work now.

    Same.
  • Lexx87 #9 2 years ago

Got the collectors, normandy crash site and terminus before they removed it :)
  • Gartt #10 2 years ago

Yea, got the crash site, to be honest its the only one that sounded worth anything. Or at least the only one that can be classed as "content".
  • PearOfAnguish #11 2 years ago

    The Normandy crashes? :(

Ah man, I hope Joker is okay.

  • AtomicBanana #12 2 years ago

Got 'em all. Now to see if they remove them from my queue :p
  • Mkwone #13 2 years ago

Darn it, Only managed to que the first one before they were taken down. Should of gone for the crash site, hopefully when they're offically released they'll still be free.
  • WinterSnowblind #14 2 years ago

    @Gartt
That's the only one that is proper content, it adds a new quest and party member. Unfortunately, it's also completely free for anyone who buys the game, so downloading it now was a bit unnecessary.

The armour isn't really anything amazing, but they are all exclusive to certain retailers or promotions, some of which we aren't even getting in this country and it's very unlikely any of the stuff will be obtainable in any other way.
  • Miths #15 2 years ago

I'm pretty sure some of these are supposed to be limited to pre-orders or digital deluxe/collector's editions.
  • Sunyavadin #16 2 years ago

Aaaaaaaaaand halfway through me queuing them, looks like they edited it, now tells me the rest "are not available for downloading from the web"
  • bratmandu #17 2 years ago

    @ PearOfAnguish

I think in the opening scenes the Normandy from ME1 gets fk'ed up, and they rebuild it, but with more stuff in it. Just a guess though, based on trailers.
  • Moribundman #18 2 years ago

Terminus and Inferno (and darkstorm/incisor respectively) are play/amazon pre order bonuses in UK. Collectors armour is free w collectors edition, Normandy Crash site together with Zaheed are supposed to be the free content you can get w Cerberus network card, and I guess maybe the visors are the US Dr Pepper freebies?
  • Farfarer #19 2 years ago

Damn, got the collector armor but missed out on my burst-fire sniper rifle :(
  • Moribundman #20 2 years ago

They should make all the pre-order/Dr Pepper content available to all if they want to pay for it. Especially after this fuck up.
  • Yossarian #21 2 years ago

Eurogamer is reporting this as news? Huh.
  • bratmandu #22 2 years ago

Ok so I got all the downloads queued up on xbox.com, but I'm at work, so if they are vanishing from xbox.com like people here are sayin, will they still download when I turn on my xbox as I have already queued them all?
  • Yossarian #23 2 years ago

(P.S. Don't say I never do anything for you, Eurogamer.)
  • Jay-ITFC #24 2 years ago

Grabbed them all. They shouldn't have been showing as free, MS normally price pre-order items such as these at 99,999 microsoft points so they only way to get them is via a code on a card.
  • KujiGhost #25 2 years ago

Dammit... only managed to grab the first one before they were pulled down.

    Still easy come easy go.

    /grinds teeth
  • BobsUncle #26 2 years ago

If they give you the weapons/armour early on in the game they'll only be obsolete after a few hours play so it's not the end of the world if you miss it.
  • WinterSnowblind #27 2 years ago

    @bratmandu
If you've got them qued it should count as you already owning them, and let you re-download them anytime you want.
  • kangarootoo #28 2 years ago

I was just going to say, is this the same Terminus and Inferno armour that PLay.com and Amazon are including as part of their respective pre-order deals? If so, oops.

But then I guess MS have realised their cock-up. I was also only able to add the first item in the list to my queue.
  • icematt12 #29 2 years ago

Major mess up somewhere. I managed to get them all. Will give my CE armour code to someone if the same. Best one appears to be the crash site, which seems to be Cerberus content anyway.
  • bratmandu #30 2 years ago

    @ WinterSnowblind

Ok, but is that for definate? Can anyone confirm? I hope I don't get home later and find that they won't download!

This is like Christmas for those who were quick! Now I'm super hyped for this game! Shame I have to wait till Friday - assuming Amazon deliver on the 29th and not after the weekend, that would suck.
  • Moribundman #31 2 years ago

My guess is that the game will require you to unlock any downloaded content via the cerberus network, regardless of whether you have it installed or not.

If not I'm annoyed. For some reason the Collectors armour is still downloadable but all the others have been taken down. If you've ordered the standard edition, snap it up and pray it'll work!
  • PlugMonkey #32 2 years ago

Damnit. Too slow by a fraction. Got the first pack, and then the rest had gone. :(
  • Mavrik123 #33 2 years ago

Got to admit that was rather funny...

Shame i only got the first one but better than nothing. Seems someone dropped the ball somewhere and most likely lost their job.

  • kangarootoo #34 2 years ago

"Seems someone dropped the ball somewhere and most likely lost their job"

Christ, I hope not (and I doubt it). Its not sich a big deal that anybody should be in big trouble for it.
  • ybfelix #35 2 years ago

Yep I'd like to have some one confirm the queue-and-download-later thing. I queued 'em all but away from home. Hope they won't physically delete the file (Or block it for those who didn't get it via redeeming code).

btw I really hate these "miss and gone forever" pre-order bonus. At least do what Infamous did: release it for free after half a year or more(or even for a fee for completionists who came too late)
    Edited by 4 at 25/01/10 @ 13:21
  • darkmorgado #36 2 years ago

The Collector's Weapon and Armour are still up - I just queued and they downloaded to my xbox. Everything else comes up with the "this item is not available for download from this site" message though.
  • KujiGhost #37 2 years ago

It does say that the items are not available to download from the Marketplace website, however they may be made available through the in-game Cerberus Network shortly after released. The pre-order bonuses could be exclusive for only a short time.
  • ignatiusjreilly #38 2 years ago

Christ, I hope not (and I doubt it). Its not sich a big deal that anybody should be in big trouble for it.

Pre-order exclusives are a huuuge deal to retailers.
  • ybfelix #39 2 years ago

So EA and other publishers, while desperately trying to get rid of retailers (like the cerberus network thingie), still need to offer incentive for them, compromise with reality huh?

I have no problem with out-of-gameplay exclusives like artwork or plastic freebies, but in game bonus always make me feel like cheated.
    Edited by 1 at 25/01/10 @ 13:23
  • telboy007 #40 2 years ago

Managed to get them earlier but via the xbox.com site, all queued ready for when i turn on the 360... just hope they still download!
  • kangarootoo #41 2 years ago

"Pre-order exclusives are a huuuge deal to retailers."

Losing your job is a huge deal too. I know its a fair comment to fire from the hip during forum chat, but if someone actually lost their job for a mistake (assuming it wasn't one in a long line of cock ups) I wouldn't be impressed with the employer. Sacking is for misconduct or persistent failure, not singular mistakes.

Anyway, the amount of time this mistake was allowed to run free for will have made little to no difference to anyone's pre-order numbers. So again I say overall, its not that big a deal.
  • Diabeu #42 2 years ago

how come all of this items have been rated? ppl are so stupid
  • darleysam #43 2 years ago

I went to pre-order the LE but couldn't find a copy for the 360 anywhere, like it's not actually on sale here. So I was at least relieved to see this stuff up, but no, could only get a couple of the things.

    Damnit to hell guys.
  • Sunyavadin #44 2 years ago

I got the stuff which isn't inluded with my own preorder or over Cerberus, so I'm happy.
  • GamesConnoisseur #45 2 years ago

Normandy crashed and burned confirmed! Bastard spoilers EG giggling at the mega spoiler like this get out before release of the game! I expect this to occur at start of game as I understood it opened in a big way and exciting first hour or so.

Bugger, best keep myself off Internet for a week or so.
  • steviepunk #46 2 years ago

I got the first one as well but the rest were not available. thought they would have fixed the first one by now, unless it is supposed to be available.

@darleysam I think the LE version is only available from Game in the UK
  • LR100 #47 2 years ago

Damn, only managed to get the first link before they all went dead! :(
  • darleysam #48 2 years ago

stevie, I looked on all the main sites (GAME, shopto, gamestation, gameplay) and nobody seemed to have it for the 360. Guess when they sell out, they stop listing it.
  • Yossarian #49 2 years ago

GamesConnoisseur, the Normandy meets its end about halfway through the first cutscene.
  • kangarootoo #50 2 years ago

Is the LE version the same as a collector's edition?

I couldn't find a 360 one anywhere, and I was looking about a week or so ago. I could find a Collector's Edition version of the walkthrough helpguide book thing (whatever they call it), but not the game. PC versions all over the place, but no 360 version.
  • Hantheman #51 2 years ago

    Review reveiw review!
  • Terribly_Mauled #52 2 years ago

360 Collectors/Limited Edition preorders are sold out online and instore at Game, Gamestation, and Gameplay. Might be lucky to grab a spare if you turned up at opening time I'm told.

And I managed to snag all the bits of DLC mentioned here

  • Britesparc Verified Creative, ITV #53 2 years ago

I preordered the CE at Game ages ago (pre-Xmas) but my receipt doesn't say CE on it - bloody hope they got it right!!!
  • NelgN7 #54 2 years ago

    @Britesparc

Thats the same as the receipt for my CE preorder, surely they can't both be wrong...
  • Terribly_Mauled #55 2 years ago

    @Britesparc
Interesting.... maybe this is why preorders have been closed on it. Sounds like an error on the companies' computers for every preorder [maybe. Just wild speculation]
  • Buztafen #56 2 years ago

Queued em all and downloaded about half an hour ago. Good find!
  • TeaFiend #57 2 years ago

Screw you retailers, screw you. Whatever happened to there only being one pre-order bonus?
  • mukki #58 2 years ago

    Mnnn dang

here I got the only the first one
and the rest seem to be gone...

    oh well
  • PanStre #59 2 years ago

Yep they put a stop to it
  • BabyJesus #60 2 years ago

Oh well got the first one atleast.
  • Britesparc Verified Creative, ITV #61 2 years ago

    @ NelgN7 & Terribly_Mauled

Looking at it, it says MASSEFF, not even "2", so I reckon it's probably OK - just a generic "code", so to speak.

Might pop in on way home and check. Also want my 2000 pre-order points! ;-)
  • Velios #62 2 years ago

:( damn got there too late
  • KujiGhost #63 2 years ago

MS made a mistake. They should at least just put their hands in the air, admit it, and let everything be available to all.
  • kangarootoo #64 2 years ago

    @Terribly_Mauled, Britesparc and NelgN7

A limited Edition that was actually limited and has run out? A first for gaming surely ;)

    @KujiGhost

"MS made a mistake. They should at least just put their hands in the air, admit it, and let everything be available to all."

Really? Would you apply the same logic if you made the mistake of leaving your keys in your front door, before noticing an hour later?
  • Moribundman #65 2 years ago

All gone bar the collectors armour. Some time ago. Tried downloading before 1 and thats the only one that works. And I'm getting it with the CE anyway...

The thought certainly occurs that this is just the DATA for the DLC and to actually USE it you need to type the codes in game via the Cerberus network to unlock them. You'll note that the extra character Zaeed is NOT included in this DLC list. Probably because he's integrated into the game whereas they are all additional. You'll still need the code to unlock him, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if normally the data will be prompted to download for these items of DLC when you type the code in to Cerberus network.

The additional Sarge character in ODST unlocked when you typed in a code, although the data was accessible without a code, you couldn't make it work.
  • KujiGhost #66 2 years ago

    @kangarootoo

That is a slight over-exaggeration of the issue... I’m not asking them to make every item on the Marketplace for free.

Besides, my comment was just wishful thinking on my behalf.
  • Miths #67 2 years ago

Several people on the official forum have reported that here in Europe (but not the US) the PC version bought from the EA store is unlocked already today rather than Friday (although it sounds like we might have to wait for DLC).

I should have the game downloaded in around an hour and a half, and the date next to the progress bar in the EA downloader does indeed say January 25, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be playing ME2 already tonight.

Update: Just finished downloading and installing (it was instantly unlocked for installation in the EA downloader, unlike Dragon Age where I had to wait until Midnight on the official release date), but here in Denmark the game unfortunately doesn't pass the activation check after hitting play from the game launcher.

I'm hoping the activation servers are all set to accept the 26th as the activation date, at least then it should be possible to play tonight or tomorrow (depending on server time zones, at least one of the guys saying the game was working is in Australia where it's well past Midnight) rather than having to wait till Friday here in Europe.

This is true. Ok, maybe you just left your kitchen window open. :)
  • up_the_ante #69 2 years ago

  • kangarootoo #71 2 years ago

You can't lose what you never had. I was a bit disappointed, 'cos even I like free stuff.

I find it best to just imagine you never knew about this error.
  • KujiGhost #72 2 years ago

A truer word was never said! :)

In the long run, there will be MUCH better armour in the game when you play through so it is no big loss.
  • Rodriguez #73 2 years ago

That's the second error on a Bioware game on the 360 in the space of a week or two. First Dragon Age gets a borked title update that buggered peoples games {mine included} which was released a day early with Return to Ostagar and now Mass Effect 2 has had all the extra content that was exclusive to specific retailers released! I think Microsoft have to take the bulk of the blame for these cock-ups, they need a good old fashioned kick up the arse. I feel sorry for the customers who've paid extra for 'additional' content, especially the £55 Collector's Edition.
  • TheJuriel #74 2 years ago

An acquaintance having ME2 downloaded these bonuses and said that they DO NOT WORK WITH THE FINAL GAME. Only the ones gained through the Cerberus Network seem to work. Just a heads up.

I downloaded them just in case, but it's likely you who came later haven't missed out on anything.

Edit: Ignore this post, things do work, though they don't show up in the DLC menu lists.
    Edited by 1 at 26/01/10 @ 08:42
  • Rodriguez #75 2 years ago

^^Good to know, the retailers won't be so pissed now and neither will anyone else who ordered the Collectors Edition (like me), or other exclusive content from other retailers.
  • kangarootoo #76 2 years ago

"they DO NOT WORK WITH THE FINAL GAME"

Aw man, so now we've lost even MORE stuff that we never had.

This is the worst day ever.
  • Lamb #77 2 years ago

I would not be suprised if all these downloads are part of the free DLC of the Cerberus Network and if they were available for free until June after all Dragon Age's free content lasts till end of April.

After June I imagine they will charge £ to compensate for the discounted game. Then in a year and a half a GOTY edition comes out with all the DLC.

  • Mr.DNA #78 2 years ago

Call me old fashioned, but as this downloadable content seems to have been finalised before the actual game has even been released, then isn't it more than a tad cheeky of BioWare/EA to be charging for it? It should be on the fucking disk! DLC should be content that the developers produce after the game is released. I apologise for the expletives, but this kind of nonsense totally winds me up.
  • PlugMonkey #79 2 years ago

"It should be on the fucking disk!",

Oh, Christ. Not this retarded fucking shit again.
  • Miths #80 2 years ago

    @Mr.DNA

All or at least most of those DLC packs are free - although some are bonus items for pre-orders/special editions.
At least with the PC version I guess it's probably another (no doubt unsuccessful) attempt at lowering piracy by giving people a tangible incentive to buy and register the game.
  • Lamb #81 2 years ago

None of the DLC strategy is anti-piracy, its anti second-hand and anti discount.

There is a formula out there for good DLC and I think for the consumer its closer to substansive add-on packs released ala the original Neverwinter not the crappy 2nd one.

And I agree if the content is available on release or close to it... IT SHOULD BE ON THE DISK!!!!!!

So far I think it was only released in this fashion to get our feet wet but Dragon Age does seem unfinished graphically and atmospherically. Though I am impressed with certain parts of the game like the voice acting and the fighting system (on the PC). But they made the game to cover the span of Ferelden and thus it doesn't feel as well made as battling through the five warrens of Neverwinter.

Its very thin and generic in areas like the Dwarven slums or the fast travel settings and locations. And I would have prefered an open world like Oblivion, Morrowind to journey through with my party.
  • Mr.DNA #82 2 years ago

    @Miths:

Hmmm, after having read the initial comments here from people who were saying that they had managed to download all of the content for free before the "mistake" had been rectified, I assumed this meant that most of the DLC was premium content. If it's a case of my being able to download this stuff for free when I get the game delivered (hopefully) on Saturday, then it won't be too bad. Still, it seems like a mightily complicated way of doing things. I just hope that they haven't been stingy with regards to the content on the disk itself, what with all of this Day One DLC nonsense.
  • PlugMonkey #83 2 years ago

    Consider this hypothetical scenario:

Developer A and Developer B both release identical games on the same day. Both games cost £40 and both games provide 30 hours of top notch triple A entertainment.

One month after the release of the main game, both developers release identical DLC packs. Both cost £5 and both provide 3 more hours of top notch triple A entertainment.

When the DLC budget got cleared by their publisher, Developer A chose to spend it developing their DLC after the main game had been finalled. Developer B chose to spend it developing their DLC during the development of the main game.

They have both offered exactly the same experience at exactly the same price.

Result? Developer A is lauded for their wonderful continued support of their software. Developer B is reviled for being a bunch of evil thieving bastards.

    This doesn't make sense.

Question: When Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King was released, why did I not hear a single cinema goer say "Call me old fashioned, but sequels should be filmed AFTER the original movie..." or "If the footage was available when the first film came out..." etc. etc.?

@ Lamb & Mr.DNA: I really should learn to leave this well alone, but bad logic upsets me almost as much as video games scheduling seems to upset you. ;D

Edited for having awarded Mr.DNA a doctrate...
    Edited by 1 at 25/01/10 @ 19:58
  • Mr.DNA #84 2 years ago

@PlugMonkey: Well when you put it like that...

My gripe was that I was under the mistaken impression that most of the DLC mentioned in the article had to be paid for. Now that I know better, I haven't got as much of a problem with it. But thanks for the lesson all the same.
  • penhalion #85 2 years ago

    @TheJuriel

Kotaku has some videos of some russian dude using ALL of the download content within the game itself so I'm not sure why you think it doesn't work on the full game. It clearly does work. He even has a small tour of the old Normandy ship crash site.

Looks like, if you were lucky enough to get the content, then you've got all of the exclusive stuff. I also suspect that the exclusive stuff will be available on the cerberus network over the coming months as this is what was initially implied, along with some strange tank download that I couldn't quite understand (there don't appear to be any vehicle sections in the new game).
  • WinterSnowblind #86 2 years ago

    @TheJuriel
The downloads not working because of the cerberus download system was only a theory, and one which was proved untrue by those who have early copies of the game. If you have the content on your HDD, it'll work in the game.
  • Lamb #87 2 years ago

    @ PlugMonkey

If a game feels unfinished DLC only adds insult to injury and the blame rests squarely on the developer. I am not saying that I'm upset at the developer (Bioware) , just slightly disappointed but just enough to not have interest in the DLC. (for Dragon Age)

What should be the cut off point for releasing DLC from the original release day? Well that would depend on the complexity of the game and if it looks polished or not.

Okay I did say this and it would be unfair of me not to address it since it is your major grievance:

And I agree if the content is available on release or close to it... IT SHOULD BE ON THE DISK!!!!!!

I admit that is more emotional than logical. Its based on the notion that resources could have been allocated to improve textures or add plot worthy experience or a decent sidequest but were instead diverted to DLC.

I am not privy to the board meetings of developer A or B as in the hypothetical scenario, nor would I care to be unless Eurogamer reported it in an entertaining way. (shameless plug :D )

Remember the consumer buys the game to be entertained and not to open a bank account with the developer. Hopefully Mass Effect 2 accomplishes this better than Dragon Age, I'm optimistic and not entirely hostile to DLC done right.

As for Return Of the King I'm not sure why you mention it but three and a half hours is too long to be cooped up in a cinema and no I don't want to watch all those movies back to back to back! :D
  • TheJuriel #88 2 years ago

*shrug* I'm just reporting what my acquaintance who does have the game already, and who downloaded these things when they were freely available, said.

It turns out now that he could not see the DLC listed in his DLC menus, but it does after all work in the game.

SO, all's well, ladies and people, for those of us who managed to download these in time. :)
  • penhalion #89 2 years ago

    @TheJuriel

Not angry with you mate but, you just know that some muppet somewhere is going to delete the content they managed to download, thinking that it's useless now. Just trying to save them some grief!
  • PlugMonkey #90 2 years ago

If a game feels unfinished, or the DLC feels tacked on, then that's a bad game and bad DLC that is providing you with a bad experience. You would be fully justified in approaching future games from the same developer with caution. But that's never what people complain about, it's all purely down to the timing of the development of the content.

"Its based on the notion that resources could have been allocated to improve textures or add plot worthy experience or a decent sidequest but were instead diverted to DLC."

It's this notion that I find so odd, and i wonder where people think these resources come from. If you're given a budget for building DLC and you spend it on the main game (improving textures and putting in a decent sidequest), I would imagine some fairly serious questions would be asked as to exactly where the fuck your DLC is.

I mentioned LOTR because it is a series of films that were very famously filmed simultaneously, as opposed to the 'traditional' method of filming one film first and then the sequels after, then all three were released for full price as seperate films, and nobody has a problem with this. If a games developer does exactly the same thing for exactly the same reasons, they get pilloried for it. Why do you judge films based on how good the film is, but games on how they were made?

Also, no matter how much he may have wanted to, if Peter Jackson had 'diverted resources' into a massive Tom Bombadil sequence in Fellowship and then not had enough to make the third film, he would probably have got in a bit of bother.

It's a bit of a wobbly analogy, admittedly. Games and films are different. Things are cut for different reasons. But it still illustrates how the process seems to be completely irrelevent to one audience, and yet the cause of great upset to the other.

A much more straightforward one would be to ask why there isn't more of an outcry when the Special Edition DVD is released with 30 minutes of deleted scenes, or a documentary shot on the set. Do you think they weren't available when the original DVD came out? Isn't that even worse? I mean that stuff really is just shit they had left over at the end of the movie. It cost them practically nothing!

Nobody cares though. They just decide whether they think the extra content is worth the extra price. What is it that fills games players in particular with so much righteous indignation?
  • kangarootoo #91 2 years ago

    @PlugMonkey

"Oh, Christ. Not this retarded fucking shit again."
