Marvel vs. Capcom 2 returns, PSN demo

Dreamcast codebase, HD Remix netcode.

Capcom has confirmed rumours that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will return soon for both PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.

The game will be released this summer, although there will be a PSN-exclusive demo for the US on 30th April, which will follow in PAL territories soon afterwards.

And while you'll have to pay 1200 Microsoft Points (GBP 10.20 / EUR 14.40) on Xbox Live or USD 14.99 on PSN for the privilege of playing it, what a privilege.

The codebase is lifted from the Dreamcast, and although Capcom hasn't updated the graphics to the same degree as last year's Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, it does include two optional filters to smooth them out - "crisp" and "smooth". Mmm, crisps.

We also get the return of 56 characters from Capcom and Marvel's extensive stables, and they're all unlocked from the start, so you don't even have to be any good at it to access the likes of Ken and Akuma.

Plus of course there are online matches, including HD Remix's popular Quarter Matches, which allow for up to four people to chat while the main duo go at it head to head. The network code is based on HD Remix too.

"I think it's fair to say that every day at least one member of the PR or marketing teams receives a mail from an ardent fan demanding to see this title back, and it goes without saying it's always a hot topic on the boards," a spokesperson told the audience at Captivate 09 in Monaco last week.

"So it's great to finally put a smile on their faces and save them some money, because believe me, the original console versions of these games are going for big money on some of those auction sites." Well, thirty quid.

Wonderful news, although something of a shame that the sprites are't receiving the SFII:HDR treatment.

With BlazBlue, KoFXII and Tekken 6 also considered, this is truly set to become the year of the fighter.

    Oh. my. giddy. aunt!
Well, this is good news. Splendid news even. While I used to look on MvC2 as a bit of a spackerfest back in the DC days (some of the characters were massively unbalanced), it may be worth jumping back in for the online play, which will hopefully be more daft fun than genuine competetiveness.
  • bad09 #3 3 years ago

Hold on just one god damn minute! Are you telling me thank to my bogus US account I can play a demo of MvC2 THIS week! \o/ \o/ \o/ \o/

Shame it's not got the HD treatment though, Capcom seriously you could make a FORTUNE sprucing up your back catalogue of fighters.

Anyway, I am so going to abuse this game online, when's the release date!

This is what I built an arcade stick for - that and SFIV ;)
  • seasidebaz #5 3 years ago

Great, one sale lost. I'm not buying it.

A large part of the appeal to me was accruing points in Arcade mode to spend at the shop. Remove the shop and you've removed one of the reasons I was going to buy it. It'll be useless online as well, what with one of the later unlockable characters able to obliterate everything in about 3 seconds flat. Kind of like the Akumanoobs on SFIV.
  • bigbadbeasty #6 3 years ago

    @seasidebaz

It isn't Street Fighter. Due to the 3 players a side set up, none of the unlockable characters are unbeatable. As always, the best player is pretty much always the winner.

Button bashers get no where in this game.

What a coincidence. It was only this weekend that I decided to wire up the old Dreamcast and have a go on this game. Still one of my faves due to the madness that ensues but not so fun when a friend who's never played it before can beat you just by mashing the pad. Maybe I'm just crap :p
  • bad09 #8 3 years ago

    @ seasidebaz

Why do it all again? I like they off it myself, besides did you seriously did all that nonsense first time around?

Me, straight to DC game saves on the web. Instant MP heaven! :)
  • Laurenza #9 3 years ago

Thank goodness. My brother has been watching the 'Take You For A Ride' teaser website for days now with his fingers crossed, hoping it was something MvC-related. He won't be disappointed.

I hate 1200 points no denying but but I'm still getting this. Just a very little nit pick tho (tiny!)....

While I'm aware work has gone into this release (and I'm truly grateful to Mr Capcom) I have to wonder, If they have not updated and redrawn all the sprites like in SSF2THDR......why are we paying the same price as SSF2THDR? Just saying...

Anyway, tiny tiny thing bring on the demo!
  • bluem4gic #11 3 years ago

This will easily kick SFIV to the curve to me
  • nickthegun #12 3 years ago

Kerb. Why would you kick something to the curve?

Aaaaaanyway....Im glad the shop is gone. I hated that capcom phase.

I am so happy! I had the DC version, which was awesome, when got rid of that, I bought the Xbox version for the 360, but it hated the VGA cable, so took it back, and if it is using the DC code then it will have the proper button layout which was loads better than teh Xbox version!
  • the_inchworm #15 3 years ago

This is very awesome, and while I echo the regret over HD sprites, imagine how long that would have taken to implement. I'd rather have a non-HD version for the current consoles than nothing at all. This news is SUPER WIN.
  • wittynic #16 3 years ago

Real shame it isnt getting a HD Remix, but the graphics and designs were pretty slick anyway, its not like SFII where the sprites really needed a basic art update.
  • Ryze #17 3 years ago

Quality. I've got the Xbox and PS2 versions - the PS2 version I couldn't play for the past 5 years because of my dying PS2 not playing CD games!

I played it again last night - by chance for the first time on PS2 in 5 years on my new PS3!!! Looked great upscaled and smoothed too!

The Xbox version plays fine, but looks VERY messy on the 360.

This is fantastic. 360 version will be BOUGHT. Instabuy.

I WANNA TAKE YOU FOR A RIDE!
  • Unclebenny #23 3 years ago

    @The Bodybuilder- Second that comment

Tried to play MvsC2 the other day on my dreamcast but the aerial connector is knackered I think. An unhappy man I was that day.
This should be good. Probably wont be as good as I was when Iused to play it all the time though but then I dont think I was that good even in my prime as I was only playing against the computer.
  • Eurolamer #24 3 years ago

Unless you're not up for it, of course. Might have come across a bit presumptuous there...
  • septimus #25 3 years ago

PSN demo first, then launched about 9 months after the Live version.
  • schnide #26 3 years ago

Smart move, seeing as it's one of the few games MAME can't emulate yet :)
  • Darren #27 3 years ago

This is the only 2D fighter I've ever really liked as I really dug this game on the Dreamcast.

I do remember playing it on a 640x480 PC monitor via VGA and thinking how horrendously blocky the sprites looked compared with RGB SCART on my CRT TV so goodness only knows what it'll look like blown up onto a large screen 1080p HDTV. Not very pretty I'd imagine. Great game, much more entertaining and spectacular than the dreary, overrated Street Fighter series IMO but then this game has lots of fun Marvel characters in it.

Doubt I'll actually buy the game again but I'll certainly check out the demo... assuming it isn't multiplayer only like the Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix one was. /spits in disgust
  • FenderMaster #28 3 years ago

i'm confused... i thought capcom no longer held the marvel licence, how are they allowed to release a marvel game
  • NinjaWilliams #29 3 years ago

Great scots of awesomeness, finally YESK! This is great news, made my day!

All i need now is SF3 third strike in HD and my fighting needs will be fulfilled!!! :)
  • lmephisto #30 3 years ago

SOULCALIBUR IV, STREET FIGHTER HD REMIX , MK VS DC , STREET FIGHTER IV waiting for TEKKEN 6 AND KOFXIII and now this !!!! PERFECT!!!! :)
  • DivideAndCombo #31 3 years ago

If I remember correctly, this is the title where you tag your partner. Does this (or did it ever?) mean that you can have four players at once? - Four controllers. ?
