Mario Party 8 recalled News

Wii News by Games Industry.biz

16 July, 2007

Nintendo has recalled all copies of Mario Party 8 in the UK due to it containing an offensive word, GamesIndustry.biz is reporting.

The title was released for the Nintendo Wii on Friday and has seen heavy promotion over the weekend with TV advertisements.

"Unfortunately we have discovered that a small number of games contain the wrong version of the disk due to an assembly error," reads a statement from the company.

"We have therefore decided to recall all copies of the game from UK retailers so that this mistake can be corrected."

Last month, Ubisoft was forced to pull all copies of DS game Mind Quiz in Europe after it was found to contain offensive comments.

Nintendo said it will announce a new release date for Mario Party 8 shortly.

There's plenty more of that over on GamesIndustry.biz.

Are they all using the same localisation company I wonder? Both games featuring the exact same mistranslation.

This is slightly more annoying when you work in Game, you make up over 100 dummy boxes to stick on various marketing ends only for motherfudging headoffice to e'mail you an hour later, ''Take 'em all off again!''
Grrrrr.

c'mon, who's next to try and fail to amuse with some kind of "sweary mario" skit?

Someone in the forum posted something like this: "Appearently they refer to Bowser as a 'fucking cunt'". Don't know the exact wording or who posted it, but it made me laugh.

And yes, the word is spastic. I just wonder if they pulled the game just in the UK or generally in Europe. In German speaking countries this game has already been out for 2 weeks now (or even three, I don't know) and it features English as a language as well of course.

Wheras the correct term these days is "Nintendo fan"

Mario always disturbed me anyway; he's a horrific racial sterotype dressed up like a retarded-looking John Holmes, complete with porn moustache.

The ironic thing is it's used in the proper manner, and as such shouldn't offend anyone. Spastic means "uncontrollable shaking", as in a spastic fit of epilepsy or Parkinsons.

Fucking PC brigade.

It's a bloody cheek, the console encourages you to wave your arms around uncontrollably and then calls you a spastic for your efforts.

I predict Witch Touching will come with onscreen messages telling you you're a fucking nonce.

Although, to be fair, people who buy Witch Touching probably are.

I have it on good authority that it's Mario asking Peach, "For 100 coins can I get 1up?".

Mario giving Peach a "1up"? Nah, she's not his type.

Mario is a single middle-aged man, who has a moustache and wears dungarees.

And in the VC version of Paper Mario, if you press up, left, left, left. left, up, left on the pad, whilst in the menu screen, you change the in-game music to Scissor Sisters.

Didn't one of those Brain Aging games get pulled for the same word?
Ah! Mind Age: http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?art...

Nintendo trying to look cool by swearing again?

Perhaps they could get DEVO to do the soundtrack for Mario Party 9?

The word in question was "spaz" which has a totally different meaning in US/canada - no more worse than saying "idiot".

And yes it was in both games.

@captain-future: some years back it was the term used to describe mentally handicapped people. It wound through the playground in ever-decreasing circles where the term is now utterly derogatory and shouldn't be used by anyone, ever. Ever.

Nintendo recalls a game because the word "spastic" has different connotations in the UK than it has in US but still has no problem keeping the name "Wii" for the UK market?
