Mario Party 8 re-dated News

Wii News by Robert Purchese

25 July, 2007

Nintendo has said that Mario Party 8 will be re-released on 3rd August.

The family orientated Wii party game was originally due out earlier this month, but was recalled from sale because the offensive word "spastic" appeared in the text.

However, the publisher assures us it has all been cleared up now, and the naughty phrase "has been replaced at code level". We suspect some staff may have been replaced at the employment level, too.

Unfortunately, Nintendo says it can't guarantee that some copies didn't slip through the net, and we expect they could fetch more money in years to come as collector's items. Well, they would if the game was any good. Which it isn't.

Head over to our Mario Party 8 review to find out why.

If you buy Mario Party 8 you're definetly a spastic, so there's no danger of missing out.

What possible reason could there be to include that word in the game in the first place? Programmer bet?

Spastic isn't offensive in America, so it was put in the game.
In Europe it was changed to erratic, but some copies still had the word spastic in them.

The word spastic refers to uncontrolled spasms and shaking, so making the train "go spastic" is actually a correct use of the word, whereas referring to someone as a spastic (i.e. someone who suffers from such spasms as the result of a disability) as an insult is pretty distasteful imho.

If someone was upset by the word spastic in the context it was used in this game they need to be kicked. If someone uses it like Aretak used it they should be treated likewise.

From the reviews it seems as if we are still getting the spastic version. ;)

Do you think this has anything to do with the fact NOE are based in Germany and the offensiveness of "spastic" was lost in translation?

What I find queer is how this has sold over 1 million copies since release.

Popular mass market trash or no other Wii games to buy or combo of both?

Where exactly does the word spastic appear? My missus bought this game on the day it was released and we've played it quite a bit in multiplayer but ive not seen it. I want to know if we've got an infamous 'spastic edition' or not!!
