Mario Party 8 in June News

Wii News by Robert Purchese

10 May, 2007

Nintendo has confirmed that Mario Party 8 will be disco-dancing onto European shelves on 22nd June.

It's a virtual board game that you can play against up to three friends, all on one Wii, or online. Perfect for the whole family, you might say.

You roll the dice to progress one of your favourite Mario characters around the board, landing on various squares each with their own mini-games. These range from snowboard races to tightrope races, and from cake-decoration contests to rowing races. Multiply all that by a motion-sensing controller and some precariously placed cups of coffee and you've got ensuing hilarity.

The main game mode has the wonderful name of Party Tent, but you can also do away with the rigmarole of rolling the dice and just battle it out in the Mini-game Tent. There's also the chance to battle the computer in Star Battle Arena, as well as more variety from Extras Zone and Fun Bazaar.

Lets hope it's better than the last effort on the GameCube.

Head over to our Mario Party 8 gallery for an eyeful of the action.

More minigames? Gah.

I realise you're currently printing money off the back of titles like this Nintendo, but might I refer you to the sage words of the Black Eyed Peas? 'Where is the (single-player) LOVE?'

ugh the first mario party you play is very fun with family, but then it feels average the next iteration.

Saying that i expect the wiimote to re-invigorate Mario Party 8 once, but all the others after this one i expect to turn out to be a pile of turd.

I'd give up on hopes of Nintendo doing much single player games anymore or at least on the same epic level as Zelda Twilight Princess, in a interview somewhere Miyamoto was chatting on about how nobody wants long RPG's like Zelda anymore.... i still can't believe he called Zelda a RPG. :O

I want to see a Mario FPS. Mario: Modern Day combat.

Or a 3rd person action game: Mario May Cry.

I haven't played a Mario Party game since the very first N64 incarnation (boy I was drunk that night...), but I'm cautiously optimistic that the Wii controls might reinvigorate the series and deliver something worth getting. I said "might"...

I've always thought of the Zelda series as action-rpgs personally. I got smacked down on here last time I mentioned it. Now Miyamoto says it - so in your face doubters! :)

Seriously, it's got all the elements of an action RPG. So why not call it one.

@DrDamn what exactly makes Zelda a RPG i never understood that, it's more akin to Devil May Cry, God of War, with puzzles in dungeons and junk.

I still stand by that Zelda is an Action Adventure game. :P

The fact that Zelda is hard to categorize in a genre is a good thing - means it has varied gameplay.
Games that stick rigidly to the standards of a single genre don't tend to be very innovative.

Ok. I was just looking at the Cooking Mama thread, and I noticed this little nugget, also by you.

"I'm sorry, but a game based on cooking? Originality for originality's sake? Fucking pathetic."

So, basically, you don't like Nintendo when they try original games, and you don't like them when they rehash old games. Damned if you do, damned if you don't, I guess.

Incidentally, why are you even here? Surely there are better things to do than to comment on games for a console that you have no interest in.

Well, I'm sorry. Believe it or not, I don't keep records of all the comments people make, waiting to call them a hypocrite. That's actually the first time I've quoted something from another thread.

It just seems like some people are literally impossible to please. They don't want original games, and they don't want unoriginal games.

I really wish more people around here would argue more about games, and less about systems.

I'm all for originality mate (hence the dig at MP8) but I also dislike games like Cook Off where the originality is the ONLY saving grace it has. Originality is an important INGREDIENT of a great game, hence my 'is this originality purely for the sake of originality' comment. I mean, apart from the fact that it's an original CONCEPT it's almost sacrilidge to call that steaming pile of bilge a game.

"Incidentally, why are you even here? Surely there are better things to do than to comment on games for a console that you have no interest in"

I'm sorry, does the rule book of rules state that I can't comment on goods I don't own or in forums that don't 'belong' to products I don't own? Dear me, here I was thinking I lived in a free world. I must get you and smelly to stamp my ration card eh, Big Brother?

The online system will work in 4 easy steps

Step 1. Find a friend who has managed to buy a wii and mario party 8
Step 2. Contained within will be a game specific friend code which you swap with your friend.
Step 3. Send the code into nintendo as well as supporting documentation to prove you are "friends" including photos from the last three years.
Step 4. In four to six months nintendo will have completed their background checks and will send you a decoder ring so you can input your friend codes and play the game.

Nintendo. Making online safe for our children. While pissing the rest of us right off.

Doesn't look like much has changed with the board game side of things (judging from the screenshots) which is a shame because they could make that side of it so much fun...on the gamecube it was so long, drawn out and slow that it ruined playing it... YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO SKIP ANIMATIONS NINTENDO!!!

TBH: I wouldnt want to play this online.

This is about having a laugh with your family around the tv.

Having it online would not make it any more or less fun (unless you have no friends - and lets face it, that pretty much only applies to 360 owners)

The best part of the Mario Party franchise is the Mini Games. Obviously when Eurogamer post their review of Mario Party 8 we'll get a few people saying the original line "Not more bloody mini games for the Wii?" My instincts tell me that E/G will score the game 5/10. Lets face it board games are boring and an online game of Mario Party would be as exciting as a Cliff Richard concert.

A compilation of mini games online could be fun.
