Mario Kart Wii tournaments begin

Crush them. Crush them ALL.

Nintendo has begun what will be a continual stream of Mario Kart Wii online tournaments.

The inaugural competition started yesterday and ends "5/9" according to the official site, which probably means 9th May.

Simply achieve the fastest time on the Mario Circuit to win; you can retry the course as many times as you like.

Every few weeks a fresh tournament will begin, with some based on times and others revolving around certain challenges such as collecting coins or using specific characters. Tournament races will also often exhibit unique rules or feature obstacles not usually there.

Sounds like lots of fun oh yes it does.

Mario Kart Wii was released in early April to wide applause because it has motorbikes in. Pop over to our Mario Kart Wii review to find out more.

so it's just a time trial?
  • spazmo #2 4 years ago

No more GTA reports eh? Resorting to yesterdays news?
  • gingerlink #3 4 years ago

not quite, it's the fastest time in a vs race, which can throw quite a lot of random variables in there?

maybe you could try dropping back JUST to twelth at the start to try and get a golden mushroom, hmm?
  • spazmo #4 4 years ago

Yeah, it's no time trial. I was having a great run when i got hit with a blue shell, lightning combo.

Get used to hitting: 2 - Restart...

So it's not just me who thinks this game robs you of victory so often as to be no fun.

    @ penhalion
If it's possible to dodge the red & blue shells then, Yes it's just you.
Otherwise, nope it's not just you, the game is bobbins!

    So is it then?

You can doge red, but not blue.

    You people need more joy.

You can dodge blues if you happen to have a mushroom and are lucky enough to time it perfectly. You can get mushrooms in first place too, very rarely.

After a few goes on this first competition thingy I realised I wasn't going to get better than 1:54 without learning to use one of the uber elite bikes that consistantly powerslide directly into the adjacent wall if you use the wheel. No way am I gonna get near the top 10, which are all around 1:38. Not much point in playing really.

    What do you win though?!
  • Ace_McCloud #10 4 years ago

You can't dodge Red shells, you can block them but not dodge them. You should be able to dodge them (and blues), you used to be able to dodge them, but the only way to dodge is to bring back snaking and everyone moaned about that...gayers.

(I suppose you could hop them, but that's not as much fun as the mini turbo evade)...

Anyway, this competition makes me sad, too many luck variables for my liking.

Yep only real way to avoid red shells in the Wii version is to have a string of bananas or the tri shell pickup handy. In the 150cc races I got mullered even when in last place! The computer would constantly throw red shells BACK at me!

I didn't like the GC version until now. Strange thing was, at least the GC version was fair in that the computer didn't just target the player.

^^^ I noticed that! The computer's an arsehole!
  • Vice.Destroyer #13 4 years ago

    @Ace

My Wii is NOT an arsehole.

    how dare you?

    @ianegg

I totally agree. Those using a controller fast bike combination have taken all the fun out of any time based tournaments like this. Even with CPU opponents there's just no way to compete with the speed and tightness that a controller and high speed bike combo provides. I seriously doubt anyone not using a controller will even get in the top 50. Personally I think that controllers should be banned from tournaments like this to make it a more level playing field. I know that might not be a popular opinion.

I played this last night and i just cannot understand why this competition is a versus race, as people here have allready said the ai cheats when your winning. So is this just a competition for the people with the most patience? thats not me. Now a time trial, fair play that would work.
  • daz_john_smith #16 4 years ago

I think its a versus race to try and give more people a chance. If it was simply a time trail then the people who've already set the best times online would probably win and anyone not using a controller and bike need not apply.
