Mario Kart Wii online details News

Wii News by Tom Bramwell

5 March, 2008

Nintendo UK has updated its website with a walkthrough of Mario Kart Wii's online multiplayer options.

One or two players can connect to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection from a single console, and then select from Worldwide, Continental or Friend pools of players.

"Then you will be placed in a new group of people looking for a match, or you will join an existing group," says the website.

"When the latter happens you will become a spectator of that group's race currently in progress, as you wait for your turn to hit the track." We're quoting these bits because we don't fully understand them.

You can also see which Friends are online and then Create a Room or click Join Friend to gather people together. The Forecast Channel's globe graphic will then show the locations of the players present, and you can text chat using predefined messages, but not evil voices or sinister typing.

Online race-types mentioned on the site are Battle, Grand Prix and Teamplay, with the game host selecting race settings while the group itself votes for a track. No not sodding Rainbow sodding Road.

As we know by now, Mario Kart Wii also lets you install a Mario Kart Channel to the main Wii interface, which can then be accessed without disc in the drive. You can view stats for each track and compare results to Friends and other players, represented by Miis. There are also Competitions, similar to Mario Kart DS's Missions, set up by Nintendo on a regular basis.

It's also possible to race against Ghosts of other players, including Ghosts of rivals who are only slightly better than you. If you're shy, you can also choose not to share Time Trial Ghosts with the rest of the world.

Look out for Mario Kart Wii on 11th April and our full review nearer release.

Well, limited chat options aside, that actually sounds quite a nice online package; certainly the best Nintendo has offered up to date, at the very least, so let's hope this is a sign of things to come. I'm particularly excited about the fact that two people can play online from the same console; sounds like a great middle ground between the "global competition" appeal of the online, and the "hurling abuse at the person sat next to you" appeal of the standard split-screen mode. Bring it on, I say!

I see no mention of the dreaded friend codes in that article?

as far as everything this offers goes, it's a shame not to see a lot of this (such as competitions etc.) in Smash Bros. online...

On the plus side, if you want, you can still swear at your friends in smash bros.

Any news on whether this uses the Wii console's friend code, or a separate friend code for the game itself, like the annoyingly pisspoor and how-the-hell-do-you-remember-all-these-codes DS offerings?

Wii controller doesn't exactly have the best triggers for accelerator, brake, etc.

But then I guess that's not what Mariocart was ever about.

Will this use the wiimote in the handle-bar style?

AWESOME, sounds well done.

Can't say I care much for voice/text chat, it will never replace 4 player in one room multiplayer MAYHEM!

If you want to talk to and race against friends that badly, just phone them the old fashioned way. Those free mobile minutes have to be good for SOMETHING, right?

I've only ever played a voice chat game online once.. Team fortress .. With my mates..

Cant say it improved things any.

In fact we just ended up talking shit to each other. Pointless

However.. lack of text comms is a bad idea.. You need to have a chat before matches to decide which one you're playing.. best of 3.. etc etc.

I run my wii, pc, and 360 through my 52" 1080p tv.

It saves on space. And means i can download movies and watch them on tv, play pc games on big ass tv, etc etc.

I'd recommend it :-)

It's bizarre the amount of complaints I hear about voice chat spoiling games and then when it's not included people are still pissed off. Damned if you do damned if you don't
