Manhunt 2 trailer
Kill murder frenzy death!
As those of you with eyes sharp enough to cut shadowy throats may have spotted, Rockstar has released a little teaser trailer to go with last night's announcement of Manhunt 2.
The game's due out on PlayStation 2, PSP and Nintendo Wii, a bit bizarrely, and as soon as this summer, but it doesn't look like it'll be gracing those other next generation consoles - even if they're usually quite fond of violence.
As for the trailer, it doesn't show us much of what the game will look like, but it does feature plenty of screaming and a man called Dan who reckons that tonight, we're all getting out.

With the wii currently outselling the 360 and ps3 worldwide, and the ps2 having an installed userbase of over 80 million, i would've thought it was common sense choice of platforms.

I'm all for sick fun as much as the next person (I'd love this game), but Jack Tompson just got a hard-on Lets take bets on how long it takes for a real psycho to go on a rampage, and this game is found in their house. Whether or not the game caused to killings will be irrevelant -- imagine the reporters in the media acting this game out for the general public.
I'm gonna set a bag of popcorn aside for the fireworks. My hats off to Rockstar's attorneys -- those guys have giant brass balls. Or they are gathering on the roof of their office, getting ready for Mass Seppuku. Either way, a good show.

True, and I'm sure there will be violent games on the Wii. The difference between Godfather and Manhunt comes down to plausable deniability. Godfather follows traditional backstory (one most of the non-gaming public are at least familiar with). While you can be violent, its not the goal of the game. Manhunt is based on simply murdering everybody in your area. There was some nonsensical plot (If I remember correctly, you were kidnapped on the day you were to be executed by a mad billionare, who locks you in an abandoned city with psycos so that you can murder them all for his amusement), but the whole point was the most killing, as brutally as possible.
You can hide alot of violence behind "redeeming social value," whatever that means. Manhunt will most likely not be able to hide behind a "story," "plot," or "social value."
I'm not saying the violence is better or worse in either -- just that the public's gonna flip over Wii Manhunt. Logic goes out the window when hysteria is involved.

No, you're not.
Calling the plot of the first game "nonsensical" shows how most people miss the point completely when it comes to what the first game was really about. The first Manhunt was first of all an interesting experiment in aesthetics. The levels looked like a setting for a snuff movie, a little bit like Silent Hill but without the psychological facade or supernatural forces - pure human evil. Imo it was meant to make you feel bad and guilty. The effect was very disturbing, many people who kept playing it past the rather slow beginning said that they didn't really enjoy it but felt a strange mixture of extreme repulsion and excitement. It sounds sick but there was something very "rewarding" about observing the movement patterns of the hunters in order to execute them in the most effective way...the game wasn't really fun because it was so purely about survival
I don't think Rockstar ever wanted to tell a traditional story with it. It was more one hell of a ride and pure exploitation...the videogame equivalent to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre film by Tobe Hooper.
