MAG patch coming

New lighting effects!

PlayStation 3-exclusive shooter MAG is set to receive a patch next month.

The update, due early August, will include features fans have been "asking us for all summer", Zipper Interactive senior community manager Jeremy Dunham wrote on the US PlayStation blog.

Patch version 1.07 will bring a new 'Happy Hour' double experience point bonus, faster download and patching code, redesigned versions of maps, new lighting effects "for more attractive and realistic environments" and various bug fixes.

Suppression will join Sabotage as a faction neutral gameplay mode, allowing any PMC to battle each other on any Suppression Map.

More features will be revealed over the week.

We gave MAG 7/10 back in January.

Bumper update. Havent played this for a while (Like most, BC2 has taken over).

I will keep and eye on this and may take advantage of the double xp points to get a few decent unlocks quicker.

This has actually got me thinking about sticking the disk back in the machine, for the first time in months ( BFBC2 = a wicked mistress :p ) . Expect the Domination maps to become faction free soon too...

In a desperate bid to bring people back to MAG they do this for Supression mode only? This would be well worth it on Aquisition and Domination although I think in doing this, it gives no incentive to Vet to another faction. Still, no one's doing that if they're not playing anyway.

That changelist reads like"'we made a bit of a hash of the game we charged you 40 notes for, so here's a patch to make it into the game we should have released but it's a free download so don't get angry m'okay?"
At least MAG is cheap now. But it ain't Battlefield BC2.

    True - it's much more :)

Acquisition and Domination changes must be imminent in a future patch (they made it happen on Sabo without a client patch).

I'll definitely be on for some games if there are short queues for Domination. I really wish they'd made these changes earlier so that hopefully the user population could have been more sustained due to more map variety (and the maps were already there).

    @pswii60:

Go for it. It may suck your hours away if you get into it though. I limit the number of times I play it, as I tend to spend 8hr stretches on there trying to build up my pitiful (especially KDR ratio) stats.

Regarding the game itself, they need to make the Shadow War more visible in game. At the moment, you just jump online for a blast and MAG.com gives some background as to what things are all about.

I guess comparisons to the other modern warfare shooters are inevitable, but truly this game plays way different than its cousins. I think a 7-8 is a fair review for this as it is niche. Read about the game and its pros and cons before buying. I'm on the side that loves it, but there are so many out there who just won't understand what it brings to the table. I wouldn't have bought it without experiencing the open beta...

Also BC2 feels like an empty game in comparison. Hard to go back to 12v12 after 128v128...

I love this game, it is so fucking random, people take it way too seriously, clans dominate massively. I wish they would make the gunfire parabolic as apposed to lazer like.

As welcome as a technical patch such as this is, there are still several balancing issues that need addressing. LMGs still outperform assault rifles in terms of assaulting enemy positions, snipers are still too commonplace despite the battlefield neither requiring or calling for their use and grenade/gas spam is still near COD levels.

There are various map imbalances too, some maps are near impregnable with easily defended bottlenecks while others offer the defenders little chance with having to cover multiple entry points and little in the way of defensive cover.

Fix the above and MAG will become the tactical multiplayer shooter that it has claimed to be, leave them as is and you have something that sits between COD and Battlefield when it could easily be so much more than both of those.

    @ evilrobot

Why? It's niche shooter but I've sunk over 100 hrs into it and loved the vast majority of them. It's not a game for idiots but the numbers are steady (but unspectacular).

It does take about 5 hours of confused playtime before it fully sinks its claws into you. The way you build your character is excellent and varied and the intensity of Domination battles is truly astonishing.
