Lumines extras nearly 180MB!

Perhaps explains the break-up.

Lumines Live's promised downloadable content packs are now available to download from Xbox Live Marketplace, but you'll need to set aside more than a few minutes to grab them.

As it turns out, those anticipating a quick install routine to underscore the perceived cynicism behind the game's fragmentation - which saw buyers limited to just the challenge and online elements, along with a handful of "trial" levels for other modes - will actually have to wait for nearly 180MB of data to trundle down the line.

Microsoft and Q Entertainment have previously said that one of the reasons Lumines Live was broken up into sections was due to the 50MB download-size cap - reportedly now more of a "guideline" than a rule - and the size of the add-ons that make up the rest of the game go some way to backing that up. When you fire the game up, there's a mandatory auto-update to nab too.

The biggest of the three additions is initially free for Gold members. The Heavenly Star skin features a song by Genki Rockets, produced by Lumines creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi, and will be available for nowt until 21st February providing you have a gold account. It weighs in at 124.50MB - a reflection of the fact it adds not only new musical accompaniment, but also a video background for the skin's tweaked gameplay conditions.

Also available today, for 100 Microsoft points each, are the Vs. CPU and Puzzle/Mission add-on packs. The former weighs in at 24.48MB and unlocks a range of challenges that see you face off against AI-controlled opponents. The original Lumines Live package only offered one stage. There's a new unlockable bonus skin at the end of it too. Puzzle/Mission pack, meanwhile, fills out the Puzzle and Mission modes, with dozens of new additions to each, and is 29.59MB. Both packs will revert to 300 Microsoft points after a month on sale.

Until they reduce the cost of this I ain't touching it with a pooh stick...before long it'll be cheaper to just buy a PSP and a copy of the game!

The addon packs are a fairly good deal (on their own) but i'll be waiting for the "standard" version of the game to drop in price before i even think about buying it.

To buy all of lumines cost will 2550 after "the sale" ends. They dont even sell that many points on one card.

200 points? Fine with me. I'll be getting them when I get home today!

I'm with asphaltcowboy. Sure, the original was overpriced and probably not quite worth the cash, but I bought it and enjoyed it.

Anyone complaining that 200 points for this lot is too much though is just barking. Under two quid for the vs and puzzle modes is a bit of a bargain. Don't understand why they're putting the price up after a few weeks as the main game is still overpriced, but so long as people pick these up at the moment then I don't see how they can complain.

I still can't do the more difficult time attack achievements. 70 squares removed in 60 seconds? My best is around 56 so far.

Alongside Geometry Wars, Lumines Live! is probably my favourite XBLA game. The base game might be a tad on the expensive pack, and clearly the old 50MB limit b0rked things up a wee bit, but over the piece I'd have to say that I've enjoyed it immensely.

So basically about 100 of the 140MB size is for a video background to a single skin then? Ace.
  • in5ane #9 5 years ago

I already bought the original, so now these extras seem like a good deal! Will deffo download tonight, after more hard drive spring-cleaning.

The 'free for now' video skin is included on version of Lumines II. (although the 360 version seems to be in HD)

"(although the 360 version seems to be in HD)"

    And doesn't require a PSP

I've got Lumines and the advanced pack and can safely say that they are worth every penny (or point?). I've probably got more hours out of that game than any other on my 360.

I can't believe people are complaining that these packs are expensive when they cost under £2 and the biggest download is completely free for a month!!! :?

    Tight gits... ;)

The new skin is horrible, really hard on the eyes.
  • ram #15 5 years ago

I agree, the flickery video animation is quite painful. It also blends in with the foreground blocks too much as well.

Lumines Live! is well worth the money - way better than some of the titles i've spent £44.99 on anyway (Far Cry Instincts for example....)

Serves you right for paying the money before reading reviews then doesnt it?
