Lost Planet on PC News

PC News by Robert Purchese

13 April, 2007

It seems Lost Planet may have finally been confirmed for release on PC, as fresh details seem to point to a European and American release in June.

The news appeared on Japanese game site Game Watch, which claimed to have direct confirmation of the title from Capcom and NVIDIA.

However, Capcom Europe was mysteriously unavailable for comment to us at the time of writing. Which is probably because it wasn't there and had gone home.

Lost Planet PC will be a Windows Vista title, making full use of the new DirectX 10 technology, according to Kotaku's translation of the announcement. It will also boast resolutions above and beyond that of the Xbox 360 version, reportedly going as high as 2560x1600.

It isn't yet known what other differences there will be, whether there's new content included, or if it will be playable online over Microsoft's new "Games for Windows - LIVE" initiative.

The news also slightly contradicts Capcom's recent claims that Lost Planet will remain an Xbox 360 exclusive, along side Dead Rising. And while it may still be unlikely that rival consoles will flaunt the game, it does give us renewed hope that the zombie battering adventures of Dead Rising will also make their way to desktops in the future.

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition was released for Xbox 360 earlier this year. It's a third-person shooter that takes place far in the future on an inhospitable and frozen alien planet, where humans can only survive by using thermal energy harvested from the native race of insect-like Akrid.

You play as Wayne, a young gun after vengeance on a particularly big and nasty Akrid that butchered his father. However, you'll soon find out that laying waste to hordes of overgrown bugs using mechanoids and futuristic weapons isn't the real solution, as the real enemy emerges.

Pop over to our Lost Planet: Extreme Condition review to find out more.

I'd was excited for a second, but then I realised it was another Capcom conversion.

Still a boring game though, with unpredictable bosses.

However a general rule of thumb, any platinum-selling title released on the 360 by capcom, will most likely come out for the pc too (too milk that money).

Like I said in the forum, if Capcom intends to gain any credibility with PC gamers (and I am not really sure they do, actually), they have a lot of work to do.

At the moment, finding "Capcom" on the box of a PC game is one of the best reasons to steer clear.

Yeah, they are always poor.

Not to mention the fact that Lost Planet was really overrated... :(

Yuh huh.

Besides, I'd much rather have Dead Rising than Lost Planet.

Well if it's on PC then eventually it'll turn up in the bargain bins, and that's when I'll be getting it.

I read that DMC3:SE was actually not too bad of a conversion.

Anyway, the game never seemed that good to me, but wasn't this another one of those "only on xbox 360" tag carrying titles?

Yes, Capcom's PS2 to Pc ports were very poor mainly due to the immense difference between the architecture of both systems. This time it's different though - porting from the 360 to PC is very easy. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that this was the plan from the very beginning. I would definitely buy a port of Dead Rising!

Means nothing these days.
It wasn't too long ago that DMC4 was "exclusive to the ps3".

Not a valid excuse, other developers/publishers managed decent PS2 to PC ports as well. Frankly, I think Capcom just couldn't be arsed. Fair enough, but also fair enough that I won't shut up about how bad the ports are unless the contrary is proven.

Oh, and if the demo was anything to go by, the DMC3 port (or was it Onimusha?) was terrible as well.

Note to Capcom: most PCs have a mouse connected to them. We like to use them. In menus, for example.

I was appalled reading a review of the RE4 port, no mouse support?

"Only On X-Box 360!" doesn't mean that the game can't appear on PC, as one's a console, the other's a personal computer.

It's always been that way too since the Big Black Box exclusives.

This is probably the main reason why (well, that and not wanting to pay for online multiplayer) I've not been interested in a 360 so far - the sneaking suspicion all the best (or at least most profitable) 'HD' games will eventually head onto PC. Although I don't even want Lost Planet (Dead Rising, on the other hand....)

Yeah, I know a PC is far more expensive, but in my funny world that's not a major minus for various reasons.

I have no idea whether Capcom are capable of good PC translations, but surely it shouldn't be that hard with the cross-platform tools available these days?

Besides, I think LP was one of those underrated games. It's a solid 7/10, sometimes with moment of brilliance. It should be available to a wider audience, which along with Dead Rising, ideally would include PS3.

Bit of a spoiler there - was it necessary?

An exclusive is an exclusive, on the box or not. A case is not a magical legal contract.
And it is still exclsive.....to MS platforms (and even I doubt that).

This is a game I want to play on a big screen telly and a multi-channel sound system sitting comfy on my sofa. No thanks to conversion.

Come on, Capcom, bring this and Dead Rising to PS3 instead.

Kotaku's article (which this story is based on I guess) says nothing about it being a Vista-exclusive title.

It's possible I suppose, but I think it's unlikely.

Lost Planet on PC will NOT be Vista exclusive BUT it seems it's going to take full advantage of DX10 which is Vista exclusive. Sounds like Capcom and Nvidia are putting a lot of effort into it.

"Lost Planet for PC will boast what Nvidia calls “Extreme High Definition” support to up to 2560x1600 resolution, along with 'advanced special effects and improved lighting and shadows.'"
Hehe, I like this one! Look Sony, the HD-era is over and you haven't even properly started yet. Welcome to "Extreme High Definition "-era...on PC only;-)

I can confirm Lost Planet PC will support both DX9 and DX10.
Should run on cards that have DirectX9c and shader 3.0+ support, 256mb RAM. This is in the region of Nvidia 6600 and up. (please note the minimum and recommended specs aren't finalised yet, we're still working to optimise the game)

I've played some early builds and the port is looking good - this is an internal Capcom dev team who are working on this, unlike certain other ports which, shall we say, did not meet with universal public acclaim.
