Fubdub asks: Tim, you've had a, let's put this nicely, turbulent relationship with publisher's over the year. It seems, at least to me, that it has had a real impact on your production of games. After ID was recently bought, to in Carmack's word, let him concentrate on making games, would you consider doing something similar with Double Fine, or do you value your independence too much?
Tim Schafer: Haha. Yeah, I would love to have a soundtrack, but who knows if we can get all that music licensed for it. Just getting it licensed for the game is a full time job for about three people. We have so many songs in the game I'm not sure which ones we'd pick either. But it would be cool.
Driving your Deuce around in the game you have this thing in it called the "Mouth of Metal", which is basically a radio, and we let you pick which songs are playing and which songs you skip, and you can shuffle and sort the songs by genre, and you unlock new songs as you play constantly. So I think people will enjoy the soundtrack most as they play the game.

    :\
    edit: it's fixed now :D

I think my question was pretty answered:

Hard to explain. I feel a very personal connection with those games. That's one of the main reasons I started Double Fine. So I could have a say in what was done with the characters and worlds we make up. And so with Psychonauts or Brtal Legend, if anything happens with those stories, you know it will come from us!
  • harzo #15 3 years ago

My question never got answered :(
  • Sunyavadin #16 3 years ago

I want a film with Jeff Bridges with Laser Eyes now.

Or a game where you play him.
  • roz123 #17 3 years ago

Sounds like Tiim Schafer is plagued by shitty laws and greedy producers.
  • Gurrah #18 3 years ago

How did I get from being sad about Brütal Legend not coming to the PC to being called a bad person for hating consoles by Tim Schafer? No seriously, the answer was pretty lame, saying an action game does not belong on the PC is a bit weird. I know bringing up piracy or predicted low sales would have been a cliché answer, especially with EA publishing, but last I remember there are plenty of 'action' games on the PC.

But to clarify, I don't hate consoles, I hate the fact the PC, my gaming platform so to speak, get's less and less love these days without anyone being able to produce a viable answer to what's causing the decline in love. Apart from that I don't own a TV-set and wouldn't want to spread my hard earned cash between 2 or more systems.
  • Ryuken #19 3 years ago

Same here Gurrah, a real shame. I guess it's back to playing Psychonauts on PC then.

  • WJF #20 3 years ago

Same Gurrah, I don't own a TV so the PC (technically bootcamp) is my platform of choice.

Wish some more driving and action/adventure games come back. I miss those genres.
  • Eraysor #21 3 years ago

    That was truly epic.
  • siro #22 3 years ago

    Thanks for posting my question!

But seriously, if I could choose between laser eyes and Brütal Legend, I'd go with them lasers to be honest. :)
  • sneetch #23 3 years ago

    @Gurrah

I heard from some guy on teh internezt that you hate consoles so much you punch them. Is that true? ;)

I too thought that was a bit of a BS answer from Tim. Not like the PC can't do this kinda thing.

The painfully obvious counter to 'Why all the hate for consoles?' is 'Why all the hate for PCs?' Well, Tim Schafer the PC hater (it rhymes therefore it's true), can you answer that?

I'm really looking forward to this game, and I don't know why. I'm clueless about metal and it's been ages since I last played a Tim Schafer game (Grim Fandango). But I still feel this game is going to be a huge must buy for me.

By the way, Gurrah et at, what is the issue about not having a TV? If we were in the SNES era of RF connections I'd understand, but nowadays PS3 and 360 use HDMI (which is as standard as it gets! adapters to DVI or VGA are inexpensive...). I understand that the PC is your platform of choice (or that someone may really hate consoles), but not having a TV is as weak as excuses can get :-D
  • mkreku #26 3 years ago

That not-coming-to-PC answer made me sad.
  • Kluff #27 3 years ago

Tim Schafer the PC hater (it rhymes therefore it's true)

It doesn't rhyme, therefore I voted you down! :-P

But I also disagree with Tim. It's not that I hate consoles, it's just that I don't care for them. PC is my platform of choice, it was always the only gaming system I had and I doubt it will change. Those games he names are surely great (though I wasn't impressed by the beginning of Okami) but the PC offers also many wonderful titles.
Sure, Double Fine designed the controls for BL specifically for consoles, but the Psychonauts PC port was great, so they proved that they can customize them to a different platform.
And ehm, I never had a problem playing action games on the PC, quite to the contrary, FPS play generally better.
  • giant_frying_pan #28 3 years ago

I think people are taking his relatively tongue-in-cheek response a mite too seriously. Even though they're working with EA Partners, Double Fine is a relatively small studio and clearly they're concentrating first on where the money is - consoles.

Surely no-one believes that someone with a deep PC gaming pedigree such as Schafer actually hates that platform all of a sudden? If EA wants a PC release or feel it will be economical to do so, I'm sure one will follow, but it's not a given.

    No. At least I don't. :)

That's why I said "Tim Schafer the PC hater (it rhymes therefore it's true)": I was just responding in a similar tongue-in-cheek fashion (and it does too rhyme Kluff, you're just doing it wrong. :p )

For the record, I'd buy this for Xbox even if there was a PC version, I reckon it'll be a game to play on the couch.
  • guybrush #30 3 years ago

It's funny because the joke he made in the PC answer talks about Japanese games and that's the reason their not in the PC not because they are not suitable for the platform, but Capcom and others are starting to change that and more Japanese games are coming to the PC, and if it runs on the 360 and doesn't take a lot of effort to put it on the PC
  • Raziel #31 3 years ago

Not a lot of new details or info.

    ...

Meh, I'm still excited. Bring on Rocktober!
  • Domovoi #32 3 years ago

So, wait... nobody bothered to ask why Dio was booted in favor of Ozzy?
  • Skurmedel #33 3 years ago

My question didn't make it. Instead the "super moderator" posed it but changed Full Throttle 2 with Grim Fandango 2... I'm a little disappointed.
  • chanderzz #34 3 years ago

How is it decieded which questions are answered btw?
  • dingo75 #35 3 years ago

    No PC = No Sale
unless it will be a special 15 EUR deal somewhere for the Shit-Box in a while.

I'm with perfecto, these were some dull questions.
  • Domovoi #37 3 years ago

You know, I was of the "PC or no deal" camp for years, too. Then I just threw down 200 euro's for a console once and played games both on it AND my PC. Life really is much better that way.
  • grantc7 #38 3 years ago

Tim Schafer is responsible for some of my happiest gaming memories and im also a metal fan, so surely this game is has to be GOTY!
  • mazzl #39 3 years ago

@Gurrah buy a controller! they do make them for pc's .....
