LittleBigPlanet servers switched off

To "fix the glitching issues".

Uh-oh! Having turned them on yesterday, Media Molecule has had to turn off the LittleBigPlanet servers.

"Great gremlins and ghosts!" an update to the original post on the developer's website began.

"The servers are down while we try to fix the glitching issues some players have experienced. They will be back online as soon as we have fixed the problem. Keep your browsers pointed at this post for updates."

Fortunately, European gamers are spared these teething issues as the game won't be out here until next week following its recall. The game should be available at UK retail on 5th November.

Still, it's more unfortunate news for the British-made game, which despite glowing reviews (including our own), had to be withdrawn just before it went on sale due to a song with some potentially offensive bits in it.

Oh well, er, once it all works, it is amazing. We promise.

It's a great game, marred by some pretty bad press so far. I got the game yesterday and was going to try some online play tonight, looks like I won't be doing that this evening. It's worth that little bit more of a wait if they can get it right though, because the game is worth every penny
  • makeamazing #3 4 years ago

Well at least by the time it comes out in the UK the servers should be working ok.
  • Pedrolot #4 4 years ago

Indeed, this is the main thing i guess.

Good, keep the servers off until the problem is fixed! The online issues effects story mode as well, and I was seeing a long of hangs in the user interface relating to the online stuff. Tonight I can play the story mode and playing with the level editor, I'm happy to wait for the online stuff to come later.

Looks like the beta worked great then! Oh , wait..
  • Waldo #16 4 years ago

More time for Sony fans to go to Metacritic and vote down Xbox games they don't like.
  • Der_tolle_Emil #17 4 years ago

How big was the beta? Unfortunately you never catch all the bugs in a beta test - however when there are still some severe glitches remaining that forces the developer to switch off servers something has been wrong. I suppose the beta was too limited in users but who knows.

Too bad I still don't have a PS3 because I really want to play this. Maybe there will be some decent christmas bundles.

    Hmm.

Something of a trainwreck so far.

Well at least it's a good game. :D

Oh dear... LBP isn't having a particularly great launch is it?
  • Beano #20 4 years ago

No. It's really hard to predict that a lot of people will go online with their most hyped 2008 titles... geee.... get in the game, Sony!
  • Beano #21 4 years ago

"More time for Sony fans to go to Metacritic and vote down Xbox games they don't like. "

Apparently there's always time for that... at least some 360 fans are also voting down PS3 titles. Really sad and a waste of time.
  • Doctor_What #22 4 years ago

Funny you should mention that: they've stopped user voting on LBP on metacritic (the first time I've ever seen that) because it had been voted down to 6.1/10 by users before it was even released.

Why do you need online servers for the single player game?
  • kinky_mong #25 4 years ago

    A little anecdote:

I was in Oxford Street HMV yesterday and they have a big area in the games section designated to LBP (its where they used to have the Guitar Hero bit if anyone's familiar with it). I was queueing up by that section buying a record (Rocket Soul by Plump DJs if anyone is interested in insignificant details) and watched a group of 4 girls being shown how to play it by some guy who worked there.

Now I don't want to make sexist assumptions but they were clearly part of the "casual" demographic and the guys description of the controls went straight over their head. Example: "Right if you press R2 you can make him do a little dance... R2. If you look at the top of the controller there's another button behind that one you've got your finger on." (I'm paraphrasing because I can't remember exactly what he said R2 did, but it was something that was meant to show off the wacky side of the game)

The group of girls clearly didn't get what was going on with the game and the guy was really struggling to explain how to do stuff in the game. The girls lost interest soon after and went off to the Wii section.

I'm not going to make assumptions at whether LBP will really appeal to the "casual" market after that. I'll let others.
  • Doctor_What #26 4 years ago

Surely all he really needed to tell the girls was 'left, right, jump: off you go'? I realise that there's a lot more that you can do, but to get the feel of it you need to get people playing, and once they've got that then you start introducing the expressions and suchlike. I agree that your story does reflect that LBP is a little bit more advanced than the truly casual titles (which it is), but it also reflects that the guy is a bad teacher for making things too complicated too quickly when his audience wasn't responding.

"Why do you need online servers for the single player game? "

    Maybe because of leaderboards etc.

But you can still play the single player game and design levels offline until the servers come back online.

I think Sony is betting on the wrong horse. Resistance will sell more consoles/games than LBP.Heck..., even that mediocre off-road game. Boys will be boys, and girls will be Wii. Get over it.

Well TBH... between LBP and a Mario game on Wii, we all know what casuals will pick.

Sony still have a big marketing battle to sell this to a wide audience.

    Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo! ;)

The PS3/360 has enough shooters, we need LBP to succeed so that more quirky games become available (outside of the Wii of course).

  • Beano #32 4 years ago

"I think Sony is betting on the wrong horse."

    No way.

Betting on LBP is a smart move - it has far more mainstream appeal that R2 for example... and Sony needs to penetrate the mainstream market with PS3.
  • Beano #33 4 years ago

The price is a issue - true - but a LBP will mean a lot for the attractivenes to the mainstream consumers.
I personally know a few non-hardcore gamers that are buying a PS3 because of LBP.
But the price still needs to go down and a lot of people are still waiting for this to happen.

I din't say I'd agree with that (like I *totally* disagree with the *oh Banjoo, should be on the Wii* thing), but..., people are just like that. I'm not saying LBP/Banjoo shouldn't be on the proper gaming platforms (read 360/PS3), they most definetly should. Don't think however thery are going to be *the* thing. Gears is. Resistance is. PES/FIFA is...

I think this is a hardcore game, do you think that people with little time for gaming are going to be arsed with designing their own levels. For most this will be a curiosity that will wear off fairly quickly.
  • Les #36 4 years ago

"I think this is a hardcore game, do you think that people with little time for gaming are going to be arsed with designing their own levels."

No, the people with little time will enjoy the creations of the people with much time (the hardcore). The game itself is fun, it's not just a level editor. That would be pointless.
  • Thunderbolt #37 4 years ago

    miiiguel,

Ok sure I see your point.

  • brappbrap #38 4 years ago

it's just one thing after the other with this game. By the time it's playable will anyone care anymore?
