LittleBigPlanet coming to PSP News

PlayStation 2 PSP News by Ellie Gibson

24 February, 2009

Sony has announced a trio of big-name titles coming to PSP.

First up is a new portable version of LittleBigPlanet, which "allows players to create their own levels and share them with the community". Just like the PS3 version, then.

A new instalment in Sony's popular quiz game series is also on the way. Buzz! Brain of the UK will see gameshow host Buzz "searching for the smartest people in the country".

Little else is known about those two, other than the fact they're both out this year. However, Sony had plenty to say about MotorStorm Arctic Edge. This one's in development for both PSP and PS2, and both versions are down for an autumn release.

MotorStorm Arctic Edge is set in Alaska so you'll have to cope with plummeting temperatures, sudden avalanches and broken ice bridges. There are three different racing altitudes to make things tricky, too.

The good news is you get two new vehicles - the Snowcat, which can blast through packed snow, and the Snow Machine, which never loses its grip. Plus you can customise your vehicles with different wheels, exhausts, spoilers and stickers, and even create your own liveries.

On top of all this, MotorStorm Arctic Edge for PSP will have an Ad Hoc mode for wireless races between up to eight players. There's also an Infrastructure Mode for online play.

I'm hoping the Pursuit Force devs can bring something extra to the table of their Motorstorm title, move the franchise beyond launch series status - can't quite put my finger on it, but while I enjoyed the original I wasn't keen on Motorstorm 2.

LBP for the PSP gives me even less reason to buy a PS3 :)

It may be the first PSP game I buy since WipEout Pulse.

From IGN:

"LittleBigPlanet---
Developed by Sony Cambridge in conjunction with MediaMolecule
New SackBoy adventures with the same play, create, share experience for gamers on-the-go
Brand new levels and environments specifically created for the platform"

So THAT'S what Sony Cambridge have been up to.

This info was leaked from Sony's annual briefing last year. The main points were:

LittleBigPlanet PSP has been in development for 4 months
MotorStorm is coming to PSP
Price cuts coming in March
PS3 outperforming 360 in PAL territories
PSN getting huge investment
Uncharted 2 coming - Aztec location?
God of War 3 looking amazing

So that is 4/7, arguably 5/7 so far. Possible price drop next month?

Good for PSP support, I don't like this mentality that proper main line games should only be developed for the 'big' home consoles. The wee machine deserves a bit of support.

@Widge, agreed and fingers crossed these will do well enough to kickstart PSP software sales in the west and lead to some original IP being made by Western devs for the machine. For one thing I wouldn't be surprised if Daxter/GOW Chain of Olympus dev started interest in working on PSP again will result in something, my guess is a PSP Uncharted.

It's almost exactly 12 months since the last PSP title I purchased - God of War. I'd probably buy LBP. Motorstorm for sure...

\ponders whether PS2 Motorstorm will work on a BC PS3....?

the problem with PSP has been that Sony haven't backed it consistently enough with first party content to lead their third party support. again, whether the answer lies in translating home IPs to the portable is debatable. having said that i can never have enough of LBP. hopefully cambridge can exploit the PSP just as well as MM exploited the strengths of PS3.

Anyone want a Kratos code for LBP? I found a spare one. No charge, just email me.

UPDATE: code has gone.

LBP on PSP - how compromised is THAT going to be ? Can a PSP handle one hundreth of the features of PS3 LBP, or will wel ACTUALLY get a sackboy side scrolling platformer with user defined skins ?

I hope to be eating my hat when it comes out, I really do.

Hopefully the PSP section is gaming stores should start growing again, instead of looking like it's just about to disappear forever. I can't believe how small PSP presence in Game is at the moment, considering how well the hardware is selling.

i think your underestimating what the psp can do, I didn't think they'd manage god of war on the psp but they somehow managed to and they improved the controls.

All they have to do now is support trophies on the PSP so they sync with your PSN account.

I might have a reason to get my PSP out of the drawer and dust it off. It's been dormant since God Of War was completed.

Wow, these new titles could take the number of must-have PSP games up from a couple to a handful!

Excellent, now I'll be able to re-enact 9/11 on my PSP.

(Seriously, my future brother in law got a PS3 for christmas, and spent most of new year's day showing me and the fiancee's family all the 9/11 levels. Some of them are laughably crap, but there was a one that actually ended with islamic heaven with the however-many virgins - who'd have thought heaven would make a good platformer? lol)

This is better news from Sony. Long has the PSP been pretty much ignored with only a trickle of titles coming out - and every other month or so, at best.

I don't see any harm in having mini-counterparts to some of the bigger titles on the PS3, being developed (and slightly tweaked) for the PSP, or even the PS2.

One thing the blogs on here have ignored (although quite understandably, after being hit with a whammy of unprecedented PSP title announcements) is the PS2 version of MotorStorm.

I know what you're thinking but in my opinion, I don't see anything wrong with the PS2. I own a PS2 and PSP (not PS3 - sorry, Sony, but you haven't convinced me yet) and I'm a loyal PlayStation fan and I'm still enjoying my PS2, especially now because so many titles are so cheap.

So, it's nice to see that a modern developed IP is being retro-fitted onto the PS2 but also being ported to the PSP. Right now, I and I'm sure many PSP owners are not too concerned that these could potentially be viewed as 'ports' of their bigger brothers from the PS3. It does not matter, because the PSP is getting a bit of attention and that's all very important.

I tell you one thing though, Sony needs to be making such announcements AT LEAST once every two months, in order to keep PSP fans loyal, so not to neglect the little machine and disenchant/deter potential new buyers.

Please Sony, do not screw up these announcements and delay these releases until next year!!!
