Lips Hands On

Xbox 360 Hands On by Rob Fahey

7 November, 2008

Page 1 of 2. Page 2 ->

If music be the food of love, then karaoke is... What, exactly? A cheap, vaguely guilty but widely enjoyed pleasure - the kebab of romance? The battered sausage of passion?

We do mean "widely enjoyed", too. Karaoke has been rehabilitated. Once a word on a chalkboard outside your local which might as well have said "Go Away", karaoke is now a staple of parties, nights out and nights in alike. Very British inhibitions have given way to our inner songbirds, and we've suddenly decided that watching our pals murder the classics is actually great entertainment, rather than being embarrassment on a similar scale to walking in on your parents in flagrante delicto.

Two major things deserve credit for this renaissance in the warbling arts. Firstly, there's the sudden proliferation of Japanese-style karaoke booth establishments, where you book a private, waiter-served room with a handful of your friends - rather than stumbling drunkenly on-stage in front of a bar full of strangers to belt out Independent Woman three octaves too high for your voice. Secondly, and arguably more influentially, there's SingStar.

Whoops, there we go - three paragraphs into a preview of Microsoft's Xbox 360 karaoke title, and we've already mentioned the elephant on the table. SingStar is a big deal, though. It's sold millions of copies, and while the technology behind the game has evolved disappointingly slowly since its inception, there are tons of discs of songs available for the PS2 version - and hundreds of tracks online for the PS3 edition.

That's a big hurdle for Lips to jump over, because frankly - let's get this out of the way early on - any karaoke game lives or dies on the strength of its track listing and available content. You could build the most technologically impressive singing game ever, but 99 per cent of people's purchase decision would still be based on what they get to sing, at the end of the day.

'Lips' Screenshot 1

In general - especially with two players - the screen is much busier than this. When you do well, it's loaded with all sorts of explosions and nonsense.

To make matters worse, everyone's tastes are going to differ wildly on that front. There are people in this world who think it's acceptable to sing Celine Dion ballads in public, for god's sake - but if you want to make a karaoke game that'll be a success, you need to appeal to those deviants as well as those who just want to growl along to some throat-shredding rock classics.

Looking at Lips' original line-up of 40 tracks, there's a solid attempt at variety on display here. It's likely that almost everyone will find something they can sing. It's also likely that most people will only find two or three things they actually want to sing. The result is that Lips' success depends almost entirely on the quality and quantity of downloadable songs which appear after release. If they can get a couple of dozen songs out every Friday, with good variety and reasonable prices, and rapidly build up to (or surpass) SingStar's library, Lips will be a winning product. If not, they might as well not have bothered at all.

With that sobering note out of the way, though, there's actually a surprising amount to say about the other 1 per cent of Lips' potential success - the game itself, and the technology therein.

'Lips' Screenshot 2

In case you're wondering, Morten from A-Ha managed to score 2.5 million points on Take On Me, which the game proclaimed to be Big Bang level. Take that, Duffy!

While it's easy to roll your eyes and accuse Lips of hopping on the bandwagon of SingStar's success - it's easy because it's entirely true, of course - Microsoft cannot be accused of creating a direct clone in this instance. In fact, after an evening with Lips at the publisher's rather oddly arranged "house party" (most of our house parties don't take place in grand ballrooms with waiters serving around trays of sushi, canapes and champagne while legendary pop stars sing their hits on stage - perhaps we're just doing it wrong), we came away pleasantly surprised at just how advanced the game is compared with Sony's karaoke queen.

Lips, in many ways, is the game we've wanted Sony to develop SingStar into. Going hands-on (er, lips-on?) revealed that almost everything on our SingStar Wishlist has been included in Lips - it's almost as if the developers had looked around the internet to see what SingStar players really, really wanted from the game, and built all of those features into their own version. In fact, that's probably exactly what happened.

Starting with the obvious - wireless microphones. We're sure we remember these being promised for SingStar PS3, way back when, but they've certainly never emerged. Lips' wireless mics feel fairly sturdy and, as you've probably seen, have a set of flashing, glowing LEDs in the bottom section of the microphone. Hurrah for LEDs.

Not my type of game at all... mainly because I sound like a wounded seal when I sing... but some will certainly love it, and its just nice to see a much broader mix of games on the 360.

Liking the ability to get bonus point for going off-piste with the singing.

Not that I will, as I'm about as tuneful as a drunk tramp howling for pennies. But wireless mics - how has Sony let Microsoft steal the lead on that front?

Wow. That Singstar wishlist was a big one. Wireless mics - yep a definite improvement, but really, any TRUE rock god has wires for mic twirling and wobbling the wire all over the place like an iPod advert.
LEDs and motion sensing was on your wish list? Really?
And being able to add scores by warbling like some has been Noggie with a mullet? How does that work? Sounds suspiciously like some "casual" gaming mechanic to ensure even the most incompetant howler gets a zillion point bonus and screen explosions every ten seconds even if they're nowhere near on pitch. Which I suppose is fun, but sort of misses the point of the game.

problem is Sony music own a rather large amount of the music industry, so expect alot of novelty songs on Lips, when they run out of mainstream bands.

I hope this isn't one of those "overly positive" previews and then when the game is reviewed it actually turns out to be shit. The reason being? Well, I was very much on the fence (but looking for an xmas party game) but have just now placed my pre-order at zavvi.

It's a risk.

You seem to think that that sony music would not licence any rights because they have a games department. There is only one thing that matters to a company and it most certainly isn't fanboy notions like that.

Your right they are different departments i mean Microsoft license windows to Sony laptops, but i reckon Sony Entertainment will be looking to keep alot of songs exclusive to sing star at least for a time limited period.

Im baseing this on the absolute massive lack of Sony published films appearing on the 360 Film Store, and you can bet your life when the Sony Film Store opens on PS3 it will be packed with Sony Films. 007 from day one.

They own a chunk of it, but there's plenty out there that they don't own. Anyway, I doubt Sony Music will have much problem with charging Microsoft for use of their catalogue.

Since the track list is region specific, I'm hoping they make the US tracks available over here.

I'd much rather be singing REM's "The One I Love" and Weezer's "Island in the Sun" than Geri Halliwell's "Raining Men" and Booty Luv's "Boogie 2Nite" anyway. :S

Okay - first, there's something pretty funny about complaining about a casual gaming mechanic in a karaoke game :)

Secondly, vibrato and other such techniques are the difference between flat, a-tonal, technically accurate but utterly boring singing - and genuinely good, interesting singing. Right now, Singstar punishes you for that. Two of my friends, who play with us on occasion, are professionally trained singers - to everyone in the room, they sound amazing, but Singstar consistently scores them lower than us mere mortals. Lips should, hopefully, redress the balance, and encourage everyone to sing better. That's a Very Good Thing.

I love singstar and can tell you that two of those improvements are certainly wanted in my house.

My PS2 has been pulled off the table 3 times at parties when people have been pissed and are scrambling for a go with the wired mics.

Also, the note sustain criticism of SS is bang on. It's really starting to get annoying that we can't drop the end of a note like the original artist does without been marked down for it. It was fine when SS first came out but now it's just makes all the competent players sounds like monotonous fuckwits.

Still not sure if I'll get this until the markerplace opens as I don't have a 360 in the living room and I'm not sure I want to move it there.

Also, I have complete faith in iNis that they will make a music rhythym game to not only beat SingStar, but come close to Ouendan. The fact that they've allowed the singer to 'vibrato' is fantastic, and it's something that I tought they'd add in to the next edition of Oeundan: bonus points for additional half-beats (some songs are so catchy, you're really tempted to go mental with tapping).

My only reservation is the DLC. If they can a lot out the door, and why should they not - if Microsoft have been throwing good money after bad on the Xbox project, then this is one area that absoutely demands it - then it will be a sure-fire contender for 'best karaoke' game.
