Lips sequel pout in October

With Avatar support, goodies.

Microsoft has announced a 23rd October release date for Lips: Number One Hits, the second instalment in the Xbox 360 karaoke series.

New this time is Xbox Live Avatar integration and accessories for them, which are unlocked as you progress. You can now also climb dynamic leaderboards as you sing, and race up the ranks as you nail passages earning crucial combos and multipliers.

Number One Hits has 40 tracks by current pop power-acts like Lady GaGa and Rihanna, as well as classic crooners like Marvin Gaye and Roy Orbison. Once those are exhausted, the new Hot Tracks feature allows online additions to be previewed before purchase.

Despite flashing and motion-sensing microphones, Lips disappointed last year because, basically, it didn't work. If developer iNiS has addressed those problems, Lips might finally offer a worthy alternative to SingStar.

I don't get it, if a guitar peripheral game is released without 70 odd tracks then everyone goes crazy, yet any other music game can get away with around 30. Even Lips 2 seems to have an exceptionally large range of tracks at 40. It's an outrage!!

I do like Lips, and they did release a patch for it to make it more accurate.

However, my major problem with it is the piss poor amount and quality of DLC. Compared to the Singstore on Playstation (when I had a PS3), Lips only releases 3 tracks per week and even then its unlikely you will have heard of 2 of them. Compare that to Singstore which releases about 20 tracks every two weeks, plus expansion discs.

We quickly got bored of Lips karaoke parties when we were singing the same songs over and over again...

Strangely enough I fired this up for the first time in months today just to check what DLC had been added, and theres still only 100 odd songs available, some quite good ones though in all fairness. MS really missed the boat on this one IMO they should have blitzed it with tons of DLC from day 1.
