"and the reaction to a not-as-dusty-as-you-think Rainbow Islands was "this is a game for babies"."

I see the words but just can't believe it!!! (mind you I was a kid when I fell in love with it back in the day when I got the Amiga RI bundle!)

As for Lego Bats, I might try a demo but even after trying the Indy demo I was bored of the gameplay. The LSW games were great fun but they've milked too far for me.

It has Robin in it. Therefore no sale. Also, it's a Lego game, and since LSW and LIJ were broken unplayable bags of wank, that could've been fun in co-op were it not for the utterly retarded camera and might've been fun in single-player were it not for the new-level-of-moronic AI (my gf recently 1kd LIJ and on numerous occasions had to get me to pick up a second pad because the AI simply refused to stay on its switch), so I'm guessing it will be terrible, but still review highly for reasons beyond me.

My wife played this about 2/3 months ago. Although an earlier build, she said the camera and controls were as borked as ever. Screen tearing was horrid as well apparently. (360 conference day, guess the NDA has lifted by now).

And there I was, hoping LEGO Batman will actually introduce something new in this series...

I don't get the hate for the Lego games that I keep reading here...I totally get that they're a bit pants in single-player, but Lego Indy was tons of fun for a mate and I a couple of months back! We're big Indiana Jones fans, but still I don't think many of the complaints are very valid.

Lego Batman looks great, always looking for anything that's decent with co-op.

This was pretty high on my list but with no online co-op it's now off the list completely.

Not sure if I'm odd or if those comic heroes were not big in Germany when I was a child but I never read any of these comics.
Therefore I'm left cold by all those super heroes.
Now Indy was something different since I love the films. That was an instant buy.
I think I will skip this for now.

I don't think many people read the comics, they just saw the films. I don't really much care for superhero films. That Batman isn't a superhero is its main appeal to me. I think the original 4 range from entertaining-but-a-product-of-the-80s-and-seem-dated (the first two) to inexcusably atrocious (the second two), whereas Begins is just a masterpiece, I can't get enough of it. I don't think TDK quite recaptures the magic, but its great nonetheless. And I've never read a Batman comic.

i really love the lego game. me and my gf love playing them together. my only concern is batman is more combat orientatied and to me that has always been the lego games weak point

Ultimately its for kids though so its not going to Halo or MGS4, is it. So lighten up

I have recently finished LSW and it was quite fun although I hope the combat has improved.

I think this will be guilty purchase plus its the one of the only a few games coming to the PSP around christmas.

If it has the 'batman and robin' version of Mr freeze then it would be pretty cool, otherwise I'll probably give the game the cold shoulder

Can't wait. I gave the Indy version a miss to keep the LEGO thing fresh for this one.

1. Batman 1 & 2 aren't dated.
2. Batman Begins is mince.
3. See 1 & 2 (literally).

ED209,

Batman Begins was the first Batman movie about BATMAN!

Whereas Batman (1989) was the Joker movie with the Batman in it.

Its all apples and oranges anyway.

I watched the first one (B89 as the cool kids on IMDB seem to call it) this morning on my second monitor while I 'worked' :)

It is incredibly horribly dated. Obviously the CGI is laughable, as would be expected, but my main problems are:

a) There's no explanation to anything. Why Batman? Who made that stupid car and why?
b) What the fuck is that Batwing thing?
c) If that haircut isn't dated then I don't know what is.
d) Keaton is fine at playing Wayne, but terrible at Batman. Every time he puts on the suit he starts walking like a robot. Flair, finesse and cool seem to have completely passed him by.
e) Gotham doesn't feel remotely like a city. It looks like a large Disneyland with no source of light.
f) Howcome it appears he can only glide down at a perfectly vertical angle?

Basically there's a vigilante guy with some frankly ridiculous vehicles and some "wonderful toys" who dresses as a bat, and we find out near the end his parents were murdered. And that's basically what you get to work with, everything just has to be taken, with no explanation. And I don't go for that.

In Begins, we find out why bats, where all the money came from, where the suit's origins are, a car that actually serves a practical purpose and has a backstory other than just looking ludicrous, why he wants to fight, his motivations, his training, everything is explained to an acceptable and plausible degree (except for that one scene when he flies, when he can't fly). And for me having that information makes the film a hell of a lot more enjoyable. I'm one of these people who likes to know why things can do what they do, so a reason for why a seemingly ordinary cape can suddenly turn into a solid handglider is much appreciated.

Those games are supposed to be played with friends, having a laugh together over a few beers.
In a dark room by yourself, they easily get a pit pants, tbh.

So I can easily understand why most of you dont like em ;)

But I don't find them a laugh with mates. I don't enjoy wrestling with the world's worst co-op camera.

i don't actually understand the camera gripes, this game really wouldn't work if you could control the camera, it would be just wrong, its more or less a 3d platformer, if the camera followed you round you'd only be angry about being attaced by people off screen. a completely a fixed camera is a much better approach imo, makes it more like an updated golden axe and who doesn't love Golden axe, actually maybe its more like streets of rage...but in any case i never even noticed there was anything wrong with the camera. hopefully there'll be a batman begins secret bonus level, like in the other games, that would be nice...is it still too soon to put heath's joker in a game?

It's explained in the film that the material turns solid when a small electrical current passes through it. Hence the gliding.
