LBP dev hints at another big reveal News

PlayStation 3 News by Rob Fahey

4 August, 2008

Media Molecule co-founder Alex Evans wants to do another big "reveal" for LittleBigPlanet - and reckons the game has plenty left to surprise us with.

Chatting to Eurogamer last week Evans said, "I really want to be able to do another [Game Developer Conference 2007] reveal. A lot of people say to me that when we first did that Sony GDC reveal of LittleBigPlanet, that was a big shock - people didn't see it coming. I want to do another LittleBigPlanet reveal that people don't see coming.

"It's still LittleBigPlanet, but people will be saying, 'I thought it was this - now you're telling me it's this as well?!' That excites me hugely."

You certainly can't accuse the studio of thinking small, and Alex makes no apologies for that."I started Media Molecule with my friends to go balls-out, to see what's the biggest thing we can do," he enthused. "I would love there to be a LittleBigPlanet universe of content. With a game like this, the number of directions and the breadth that you could take in, while keeping it in a self-contained universe, is insane."

As to those people finding the wait for LittleBigPlanet all too long, Alex points out that the game has actually been developed in double-quick time - and if it feels like it's been around for ages, that's because they've been open with everyone about what they're doing from the outset.

"The big thing thing there is that we've got into a real habit of throwing stuff out earlier, testing it and showing it earlier," he explained. "A lot of people ask, 'When will LittleBigPlanet be done, for god's sake?'. This is the quickest game I've ever worked on! To me, this is an in-and-out, job done sort of thing.

"I think the reason is because we showed it when it was less than a year old. If you go around and ask developers working on a new platform with a new IP whether they'd show it when it was less than a year old, those people would be like, fu** off!"

"We've got used to this idea of really baring our soul to everyone as much as possible," concluded Alex. That's going to be great for them in the future, though, he reckons. "It means that we can react to the community," he explained.

LittleBigPlanet is due out exclusively for PlayStation 3 this October.

Hmmm.. well if we won't see it coming then we shouldn't discuss it I guess ;)

Classic before it's released?

It's a first, people!

Or, in other news, let's wait and see before trumpeting the new born king, ay?

Sounds interesting.
Although I often prefer it when companies only tell us a game is coming 3months before release, otherwise the excitement inevitably dies before the game is finally released.
Anywho, I hope this game is amazing as everyone is making out. I really do.

PSP version? :)

My bet is that they will reveal it to have a 3rd person view.

It's 2.5D. Surely you mean 1st person?

I must admit I find it strange so many are herald LBP as the second coming. I've never been convinced but I'll admit the last trailer I saw on PSN looked pretty fun.

I hope SCEE release a demo (for once), as I do want to find out for myself was the deal is.

The most hyped straight up platform game of all time? I always thought Nintendo was home to the big cutesy platformers but LBP could prove otherwise. Weird to think that one of the big PS3 white hopes would turn out to be a cutesy platformer.

Maybe it's Eye integration. Draw something on a sheet of paper, show it to the cam, and it magically appears in the game world as a new object. I saw a demo of this technology somewhere...

There's already Eye integration, though it's not that. The 3rd person camera sounds like a good option though.

I know. Your character's actually an ex-marine with temporary amnesia who's going first work for, then against, a morally suspect corporation that's try to take over the world with biomechanical Nazi zombie-robots?

Doesn't revealing so much of the game so early, also kind of make it somewhat of an anti-climax, when it's finally released?

The problem I fear here is that journos would've had a playable version for ages now, so their final review might read a bit 'tired', if you like, because they're so used to playing it, while still doing their other reviews of other games as well.

Just a thought...because to me (and I don't even own a PS3), it feels a bit of an anti-climax, because we know so much (too much, I'd argue) about LBP already.

I would be cool to be able to import video's into a level, like you can import things you photographed with your PS eye.
Or importing sound would be cool too.

The quote :-
"It's still LittleBigPlanet, but people will be saying, 'I thought it was this - now you're telling me it's this as well?!' That excites me hugely."

Indicates it is something more like first person camera. I.e. a different way to play.

From listening to more and more people who have been presented this game, I'm becoming more and more convinced that LBP is the PS3's Viva Pinata, critics will love it, the public will say 'meh'.

Quite possibly :)

Looking at the situation as a whole it's a great example of the relationship between unreleased game and gamer. A concept is shown which is then taken by the gamer and built upon in their mind, with the assumption that all the cool things they believe will be possible in the finished game will come about. Of course the reality is nothing like it and even if the game's OK it can't live up to the mental ideal that they've made leading to massive disappointment upon release. Their reaction to that disappointment then depends on their level of fanboyness.
