Langdell finds new trademark target

Tackles PuzzleKings' Killer Edge Racing.

Killer Edge Racing from PuzzleKings is the latest game to be targeted by IP hunter Timothy Langdell, who has complained to Apple that the casual title is infringing his Edge trademark, GamesIndustry.biz reports.

Additionally, it appears that Langdell has now applied to register a trademark for "Killer Edge Racing" in a bid to prevent PuzzleKings from using the name, despite the fact that the game has been around for five years.

But Sheridans, the legal firm acting on PuzzleKings founder Nalin Sharma's behalf, has told GamesIndustry.biz that it believes the case - as with the recent Mobigame one - is without merit.

"In this case and the Mobigame case we consider that under trademark law it is necessary for Langdell (or his companies) to show that the public will be confused into believing there is an economic connection between his marks and the names used the games in question," explained Alex Chapman of Sheridans.

"There is clearly, in our view, no prospect of this being the case in respect of 'Killer Edge Racing' or 'Edge by Mobigame' - and that is before you go on to consider whether Langdell's (or his company's marks) are even valid."

And Alex Tutty, also of Sheridans, said: "Additionally we have learned that Langdell is behind an application to register a US trademark for 'Killer Edge Racing' despite the fact that this mark has been used freely by Nalin for five years."

Last month Mobigame's title Edge reappeared on the App Store - it had been the subject of a lengthy legal dispute with Langdell, but his argument seemed to dissipate after EA stepped into the battle at the end of September.

Langdell's actions have been highly unpopular in the industry, and he stepped down from the IGDA board in September after a well-supported petition against him was put together by the membership - although a specific reason for his resignation was never given.

The man is mental. With everything that has happened since this issue raised his head, that he would still attempt this shows him to be a megalomaniac losing grip on reality.

...I predict a suicide. That is usually how these things end.
  • TheBiGW #3 2 years ago

Suicide is too quick an escape for scum like Langdell

"...I predict a suicide. That is usually how these things end."

With a bit of luck he won't teeter over the "EDGE" too long before jumping.
  • kangarootoo #5 2 years ago

    @TheBigW

    That seems a bit harsh.

Anyway, he might be rubbish at it, and it might take ages.

I assume he just spends his days Googling the word EDGE, and every thousand pages or so he happens upon another game using his beloved trademark.

The fact that he's only just found this one (a 5 year old game!) is testament to that.
  • darkmorgado #7 2 years ago

Just when game news was getting boring, along comes Langdell to make it interesting again.

Equal parts tragedy and comedy with a gritty courtoom-drama spin.

They should make a TV miniseries!
  • SG #8 2 years ago

    Unbelievable.

The thing is, immoral as it is you might say there may be a case for the word 'Edge' in the game (you'd still be a cunt to sue), but actually going for the title after the game's been out... Utter, utter scum. The man is a complete and utter fucking joke.
  • VicViper #9 2 years ago

    @Kangarootoo

Well what will happen is that we can get someone to contact him say we have suicide trademarked and say he can't do it as that would infringe on our trademark and until he changes the name to reflect this he can't go through with it
  • bumgut #10 2 years ago

    LANGDEEELLLL!!!!!!

    @VicViper

I guess he could call rename it from suicide to "a public service", thus avoiding our litigation and also improving the accuracy of the description.

(I am joking by the way, I don't really want him to die, just to go far far away).
  • Underdoseuk #12 2 years ago

I would love to be in his house right now.
"Daddy can you play football with me" ,
"Sorry son i cant i am to googling the word edge at the moment ask your mum"
"She cant either she's editing your wiki page again"

    What a idiot
  • Sharzam #13 2 years ago

You would think that after EA had set there sights on him he would run away or try to hide. but no hes actually trying to get people to kill him (legally), so this case is a good thing as means that EA will be even more determined to take him down.
  • RESIDENT_nEVILe #14 2 years ago

Jeez, this guy has no shame and obviously doesn't care that the world thinks he is pond life. I hope someone shits in his cake.
  • schachmatt #15 2 years ago

You could view him as an unwilling rebel, who accidentally points out the flaws in a system that protects the Big Ones.
I think the only reason EA have an agenda against him is because they fear their own advantage could be at risk.
  • Skurmedel #16 2 years ago

I guess he has a lot of free time on his hands. Someone should send him a knitting kit.
  • Redeye #17 2 years ago

'You could view him as an unwilling rebel, who accidentally points out the flaws in a system that protects the Big Ones.'

Or you could look at it a bit more realistically, and view him as he actually is - a low-life trademark troll, a worthless scrote of a creature who exists only to prey on others and make financial gain from their hard work.

Skurmedel - Actually, someone should send him a very hungry Mike Tyson that hasn't been fed for several days. Now that's a pay-per-view event everyone can enjoy.

    EDIT: Fer gramma.

  • tommy_g003 #19 2 years ago

    This guy's a twat.
  • Menace #20 2 years ago

We should all make some games in game-maker and release them with the word 'Edge' in the title somewhere.
  • Psiloc #21 2 years ago

I want him to die. A fire will do.

    kthxbye
  • Freek #22 2 years ago

No f&cking way! He's back? How is that possible? And doing his failed routine again! What happend to the EA trademark filing?
  • GiarcYekrub #23 2 years ago

I'm Amazed he isn't attacking EA and Bioware who have "EDGE Of Reality" badge all over Dragon Age
  • shogo10 #24 2 years ago

I think that they should just lock him up in a mental institution, no in their right mind would continue doing this.
  • smelly #25 2 years ago

    >I'm Amazed he isn't attacking EA

He tried it with mirrors edge... EA are taking him to court in an attempt to get his trademark removed

.. afterall that's all his "business" now is.. a trademark.

We actually use his name as an insult in the office. For instance.

"Seen what Katie Price did to Peter Andre?" reply "Yeah, what a total fucking Langdell"
  • smelly #27 2 years ago

(Thinks tims been in here negating everyones comments)

only fair i put them all back up again isnt it?
  • stephen #28 2 years ago

ffs. This guy? Again? KING OF THE FUCKING ASSHATS.
  • wayneh #29 2 years ago

The guy is a halfwit that is beyond boubt. But to the people on here saying kill him etc. that's just plain wrong.

""Seen what Katie Price did to Peter Andre?""
    Who?What?
  • optimusprym8 #31 2 years ago

They should put TL & JT in a cage and make them fight to the death, at least the world would be a 50% better place as an outcome
  • penhalion #32 2 years ago

He's probably trying to get some quick funds to fight the EA case. That one is going to bankrupt the man and good bloody riddance. If Apple pay any attention to this guy it's going to be a travesty. They need to let him know that his word is simply not trustworth anymore!

Then again Apple are hardly sensible when it comes to upholding bogus claims from people like Langdell.
  • poopmonster #33 2 years ago

What a complete and utter twat.
  • dither #34 2 years ago

  • DaemonSpawn #35 2 years ago

I think I should go claim my rights on capital letter "X" and word "Black" - many cool high profile things (games and consoles) use them, so it makes perfect sense. Don't bother with the fact I haven't invented these in the first place - you just have no fucking understanding of copyright!
  • Nikanoru #36 2 years ago

Good idea. Other fun words to sue for: "War", "Darkness", "Legend", "Dragon", and for a true blanket-bomb: "Of".
  • Sar #37 2 years ago

The guy is a fucking retard.

Why hasn't he been sectioned yet? Seriously!
  • actionfitz #38 2 years ago

fuck me, thought we'd heard the last of that prick when EA weighed in to dish out the legal whuppass...
    wanker.
  • lasermink #39 2 years ago

Sadly, according to ChaosEdge, Apple have already taken down Killer Edge Racing.
  • smelly #40 2 years ago

Yeah.. apple are just as big cunts in this entire episode...
  • spammage #41 2 years ago

Apple are not the "cunts" here. I'm sure they take advice from wallet heavy lawyers, who know the legal system and just wait for the resolution.

We have to hope that EA's lawyers give him the dry bumming he deserves so we can forget about the sorry little prick.
  • Orange #42 2 years ago

The trademark troll needs swatting for good.
