L4D2's The Passing out on Thursday

Includes weekly game mode "mutations".

Valve has announced that Left 4 Dead 2 downloadable add-on The Passing will be released for PC and Xbox 360 this Thursday, 22nd April.

The Passing is free for PC owners but costs 560 Microsoft Points (£4.76 / €6.72) on Xbox Live Marketplace.

The developer also revealed that The Passing will be supported by weekly game mode "mutations".

Mutations will include things like "Realism Versus" and "Chainsaw Massacre", the latter providing all players with unlimited-fuel chainsaws.

Over 20 mutations are planned and will be playable across all the Left 4 Dead 2 campaigns, not just The Passing.

However, you will need to have downloaded The Passing in order to get involved with the mutations.

In the main campaign, which takes place just after the Dead Center episode, the L4D2 survivors visit a town in Georgia and encounter the survivors from the original game. (There are some spoilery story details from Valve elsewhere on the site.)

Players will also get to try out a new co-op challenge mode, play against infected bots in Versus, and take out a new uncommon common zombie (the fallen survivor) with new tools like a golf club and an M-60.

Valve has previously said that The Passing will be followed by a downloadable add-on for the original Left 4 Dead that shows events leading up to the crossover between bands of survivors.

Oh Valve, you lovely bunch of coconuts.

Couldn't agree more. Bring on the free PC DLC!

Lovely but if Valve really wants to get free DLC as for PC, why not agree to only token 200 MSP or even 400 MSP? I know its MS who insists on adding costs not to devalue the other DLCs (or as other companies want to use that excuse).

Still I m keen on this DLC for the best co op game of the past 12 months in my view.

Love the idea of weekly mutations, should keep things fresh and interesting just as I was getting a bit jaded with the same vs maps and games.

Not so sure about the mutations. It's hard enough to get a decent game going with randoms without having everyone taking melee weapons and going down after the first half of the map - somehow I doubt that unlimited chainsaws will improve that situation.

Anyway, looking forward to new campaign. Haven't played L4D2 for quite a while now but I'm sure I can't let go of it once I start to play it again.

Aw nuts! Forgot about this and deleted L4D2 off the HDD last week, this might have to wait until my new HDD in a month or two :(

If EA can put out free DLC, why not Valve?
  • Der_tolle_Emil #8 2 years ago

You will have to ask Microsoft that. Probably has something to do with the popularity and how many sales they are going to expect - appearently more than enough even if you sell something that is for free, otherwise it would be free on the 360 as well.

'EA can put out free DLC, why not Valve? '

EA has not put out any free DLC, it was all on the disc, they just unlocked it over time, for BFBC2 anyway.
    The cake is a lie!!!

Microsoft will not allow Valve to release large free content, 360 for the shaft.

I'll be on...look for FogHeart...but only for co-op on advanced. I never liked playing as spec infected and loathed Survival. Yeah, I know, I'm 'supposed' to have left co-op behind long ago, but actually stopping the Survivors from surviving just feels wrong. I'm just too nice a guy to play at being a murderous monster.

Yay for Valve and free PC DLC. I was getting a bit worried about them starting to charge with this, but looks like I should have had more faith.

I wonder how long the campaign will be. I really hope it's not as short as Crash Course and actually has obtainable achievements to boot.

    Microsoft FTL.

    PC FTW.

    That is all.
